I just realized something weird and serendipitous. Robin Wall Kimmerer sounds just like the ethnobotanist Nancy Turner (look her up). The content of their words, the sing song, the respect, the intellect, the soft motherliness.

Most plants that pop up in areas where they aren’t supposed to be found, are there b/c the wind blows the seeds…or the birds eat the seeds and poop out what they can’t digest. My yard is riddled with bittersweet and other plants that I didn’t put there, but the birds sure did. Lol!

My experience with science instruction has been so different from yours--and from Robin Wall Kimmerer's experience. I almost stopped reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" in the first chapter, because it seemed wrong--and unfair. I have a degree in botany from University of Idaho, mid 1990s (north-central Idaho, great plant diversity, and in the Nez Perce Nation's lands) and was able to also take many courses in zoology, soils, forestry & ag, writing, and human nutrition. Out of 40 instructors, maybe 2 droned, or were poorly-informed or narrow-minded? Not a single scientist was rigidly focused only on perfectly repeatable findings in their research! They were always on the lookout for new observations, especially directly in nature. Talking with a classmate in General Botany (who became a pharmacist), we discovered that although many students in this course hated how they couldn't predict what would be on exams, we found greater value in the professor's untameable, ecologically broad approach.

Molly B. Farneth's "Hegel's Social Ethics" and Sarah Schulman's "Conflict Is Not Abuse" are probably the two books that can save whatever is left of "the left" that has been taken over by neoliberal intersectionality, progressive capitalism, and an exclusionary politic that moralizes the commodification of emotional labor.
