That bench turned out great - well done!!
Thank you Stan! 🙏
A beautiful bench, sir. Enjoy using it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you John…much appreciated. Glad you like it.
simple is best, or so the wife tells me :)
Simple is good. 👍
I really like that it's customizable. And, if the weight of the material stored isn't super massive the horizontal pieces can be of almost any material as long as they're a snug fit
Thanks pat…and I agree….the important part is the support bars fitting well.
Perfect size and very functional. Again , great build and discussion. Thanks
Thank you!
I’m a shallow drawer man. The depth of the drawer is determined based upon the height of similar containers which are being stored in the drawer(s). I’m going to begin building drawer cabinets based off of your build provided in this video for my out feed/assembly table in the morning. Very well done video and discussion.
Thank you! Appreciate the support. I make all my shop furniture this way.
Good Job!!! Great video . Was that row of shelfs made from 1 sheet of plywood.
Thank you! 2 sheets of 3/4”…1 sheet of 1/4” mdf…and almost all the backs were scrap otherwise one sheet for those. About $150 if you had to use all new material.
Ein richtiger Tischler schlitzt und zapft, dübelt, nutet oder fälzt. Diese zur Schaustellung von Aufmerksamkeitsjäger geht einem mittlerweile auf den Senkel.
Not really understanding what you are trying to say.
@bigskymaker ein richtiger Tischler schraubt und tackert nicht. Er benutzt das Holverbindungen mit Leim ohne Schrauben und Nägel. Und gerade wenn es für die eigene Werkstatt ist!
I’m not a real carpenter.
I agree with your choice of shallow drawer for tools like screwdrivers, box, key etc. We need also some drawers for battery powered tools that can lay on a single pile in the drawer. Thank you for sharing your design. It is inspiring to look at your video
Thank you! Really appreciate the feedback.
How many sheets did you use?
Been so long I don’t remember. I do know for the entire bench I had $250 in it. For all the drawers and the outer frame.
Commonsense woodworking simplifies the project. Emulating fine Japanese joinery for shop furniture, while it is impressive and designed to last forever, may not be too practical. I appreciate your focus in getting to the point but, what I admire most, is your ability to work off the floor. No groaning or wincing in pain. Very good show!
Thanks rimert. At the time it was an exercise in creating something that would suit my needs. I would definitely change things if I did it again now. Thanks for watching.
The color of your shirt and the gray of the wall work very well together, plus there is a kind of visual joke in the creation of a large French cleat wall culminating in the mounting of a single, relatively small, chisel holder. At least, that's my guess.
Had a few people think that was all that was being put on there. 😄
Like you, I prefer drawers no deeper than necessary - a single layer of tools, everything visible when the drawer is opened. I like your inset back to the drawers - great way to keep things from getting lost in the "hidden" depths of the drawer. Very nice built. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks John! I prefer shelves and cabinets shallow as well. If I can’t see it it is lost.
I like videos like this that show what is possible without a table saw.
Thanks tony! A lot can be done with simple tools.
Put some candle wax on those drawer slides thank me later
I will keep that in mind! 👍
Wow, really interesting workbench design - the Donald Judd of workbenches. Instead of all that routing I guess you could angle cut strips then squares of MDF and use a spacer to assemble them. Just the top section would be useful with a pair of sawhorses. Thanks for showing the errors and re forgetting the sunglasses - at least you looked cool while doing it.
Thank you Jim. At the time it served a much needed purpose for me.
Really rock-solid build. Love the design and functionality. I am a shallow drawer man myself and despise digging through a deep drawer to find anything. I really respect you getting back to basic approach in trying to utilize as many hand tools as possible. Really true signs of a great craftsman. Keep up the great work and inspiration. Thank you for an amazing video. mike
Thanks mike! Appreciate it. I hate deep cabinets too for the same reason. If there is a way for something to hide it will….and then I am cursing trying to find it. 😂
You're very welcome. You deserve it. Best wishes in your endeavors.
With a 12 foot wall of solid 7 foot tall bookcase to build, this video not only provided valuable instruction, but it encouraged me to get on with the project.
Glad it helps…..you’ve got this. 👊
ROTFLMAO.....why post a video of a build that any 10 year old could do? 😂
👍
Wear your safety glasses 100% of the time. You're welcome.
Yeah I forget some times. 🤷♂️
Why do most woodworking videos consist of woodworkers improving their workshop? Just wondering...
That’s a great question. I’ve been trying to get this place set up for a year so it’s all I’ve got right now. 😢
Noice
👊
Merci pour cette inspiration pour mon atelier que je vais faire Merci
You are very welcome!
@0:25 oh I can relate...Even more than you know!
It just seems to be a thing for small shop owners! 😃
Good job.
Thank you ken! 😃
Bet all that wood cost like five grand
About $200 to make all 8 of these.
There’s an easier solution, get rid of most of that stuff and you won’t need the shelves.
I’ve thinned it out enough.
@@bigskymakerDon’t worry about it. A smart shop owner picks up all the supplies they can when they hit a good price point, buys in bulk, buys out other shops when they closes and amasses materials at pennies on the dollar. I recently put up 120 lf of shelving and filled it up in a couple hours. Storage is good, gives stuff a home and makes you ready to take on what comes your way. I hate going to the store, why buy new when I can pick up where someone else left off for short money. I’m on my 9th shop; we have a funny way of filling the space we have.
Having wall space is prime real-estate for a small wood shop, a cleat system is a classic design.
@smartcarpie all great points. I got my start years ago with an owner selling off all of his stuff for retirement….stumbled upon the sale early in the morning and couldn’t believe it. And I hate going to the store too. 😀
@SniffieBear I agree. I’m having to maximize every square inch of it.
Thanks for the walk through of the process. I am looking at a vertical shelf with adjustable shelves to replace the plastic shelves that are saging
No problem Ted….thanks for watching and hopefully it helps.
Nice!
Thank you! 🙌
Genial 🎉🇧🇷
Thank you! 😃
Very nice. BTW, in my experience, clearing space has ALWAYS been the first step in any project. If you figure out how to eliminate that step, PLEASE let me know. :) Good video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you John. And I don’t know if I’ll ever be the guy that doesn’t have to move something. 😀
Very nice. I did a long shelf in my old garage many years ago with 3/4" construction plywood. I wanted to place it as high as possible but had to readjust a few times to get it up. It was very heavy and had to have a friend help me. Stood on the washer and dryer to get it done. I don't remember how long it was but more than 6 ft and maybe less than 8 ft. One of the problem I had was that they ceiling was a bit low (not high enough to stand up a sheet of Plywood). French Clete made it easy and strong as heck.
Thank you. French cleats are awesome.
Jason, looking good. It has been an ongoing process for my shop, building shelves, and cabinets then tearing them apart and doing it over again. Phase 4 will start this winter.
It’s tough sometimes. Build it. Doesn’t work. Modify it. Kind of works. I get it. And I struggle with trying to actually make something until everything is in its place. So I rarely build anything. 😂
Clear and simple! But … not clean before next project?
I always have stuff in my way every time I want to do something.
I have to say...I think your next project should be a crosscut sled
Quick and easy way to get lots of storage, exactly what I need. By the way, I’m in the same boat about having to clear a workbench before I can start a project. Any concerns about the 1/4” MDF shelves sagging?
Yeah I don’t know if I will ever be “organized” 🙂….they sag over time…I just flip them over if it bothers me. Can always use some plywood instead. Which is fine for shelves. The mdf really works well on drawers for sliding.
Better than melamine!🤙🏼
For sure. Been a long time since I used that stuff.
Nice job. Lots of storage and your build process is pretty simple
Thank you Greg! Can never have too much storage.
@@bigskymaker just like clamps 🤣
😉 that’s right!
Nothing wrong with simple. You could easily add doors and hide everything. I don’t think your “mistake” will ever be a problem especially with the cleat and spacer block attached. I’m sure those screws add extra support. Did you consider pockets screws to build the boxes? Nice video
Thanks Greg. Appreciate it. I’m not too worried that these are going to be an issue. And I was lazy about using pocket screws….although I did use them on the back supports. 😃
The original built ins were really nice, they could have been refinished
They could of been. Would of been a tremendous amount of work. They had a funky 40 year old house to them as well. So I opted to start over.
I miss an explanation of what's wrong with this?
The top and bottom should be between the side panels. Not in the too and bottom of them.
@@bigskymaker Thanks. Why? Stability?
Better holding power
3:25 careful with your supporting hand placement. shorter nails perhaps also good enough, it's not holding any weight.
Have to be careful. I’ve been nipped before but nothing to bad.
Jason, nice storage. The tops and bottoms are fine. They'll outlast you and me combined.
Thank you Tom! Never have too much of it….and I was thinking the same thing as far as longevity. Good to hear from you.
Organizing some of my stuff now. Though not the way you are. That will be another day. Glad they still worked out for you!! ❤
Feels good to get it organized however we have to. 👍
@bigskymaker Yes it does!! 💞
If it's getting painted I'd recommend dap premium wood filler. It's so much easier to work with than spackling paste and other wood fillers. It's tintable if staining, sands like a wet dream, and doesn't shrink or crack. It's a 3 in 1 wood filler grain filler and sealer. No I don't work for dap, I'm just really happy with their product. Especially after training under a guy that used spackle for absolutely everything even after it didn't last.
I’ll give that a try sometime if I can. Thanks for the input.
So the spacers are 2x2x1-1/32? And the plywood was how thick? How long are the tubes?
Yes on the spacers. Plywood was 1/2”. And if I remember I think I made these 14” long tubes but would have to double check. If you can buy the steel and a steel supplier. Cheapest way to go.
@@bigskymaker thank you sir.
Saved this, got a need, the old closet maid shelf just fell down last night, need to replace it.
Well that doesn’t sound good.
Hey Jason! Looking like a lot of storage is going up!
A bunch! It’s never ending trying to get my shop the way I want it so it’s more functional. You know how that goes! 😁
I know its only been 3 weeks since the video was posted, but how are they holding up? And how thick is the 1"tubing you used?
Holding up great. I haven’t moved a piece off that rack since the video was published. Side tracked with other stuff. No sagging. Using 14 gauge tubing.
@bigskymaker cool. Gonna throw a set together for my dad next weekend and neither of us know nothing about metalwork.
Use as good of plywood as you can. And grab 14 gauge….or .083 wall square tube and you should be good to go. And buy the square tubing from a steel supplier. Not the box stores. I paid $30 including tax for a 24 foot stick.
@@bigskymaker are your supports on each stud or did you skip studs? I have a 8 foot wall to cover. would like 3-4 shelves/rack on that length.
@timlist4173 on this one I did the 3 studs in middle of wall. Just did another one in my shop for 8’ material. Did 5. One on each stud. Probably overkill but I’d rather it be strong.
Got it saved!!
Awesome! Thank you….and I hope it helps!
