If you're a software engineer, game dev should come easily to you. I think the main thing you should focus on is *Game Design* . When it comes to games, I find that the best games have games within them. I don't mean mini games, or creating more than the game itself, rather I mean that *everything* needs to be interactive. Nothing should feel like a chore. Games like Stardew Valley, and Celeste both focus really well on this. Harvesting grain has little effects that you can play around with for minutes at a time. The jumping in Celeste has little particle effects that can keep you occupied for longer than you should be willing :). Once I understood this, it truly helped my game design. I hope that piece of advice can be useful if you ever decide to pursue that field.
