Cozy 4 Build. Third Test Flight 7/20/2023
Have been following this build till the day it flew. Now it feels like it was never in a garage for years while being built. Congratulations Paul
Thanks!
I want to work with you sir . I want to be your workr .
Wooo Man that's just grate . Grate job sir . Good luck . 😮
Thanks, appreciate it!
Gotta love this :)
Stupid birds...LOL....bit different than if you hit them at 200mph!
You built it ? Amazing
Definitely used to it from time to time with theGrumman Cheetah… 🤷🏽♂️
🎉keep it up!
Why not remove the voltage regulator from the brush holder to take it out of the picture completely? It seems like the voltage regulator could still fail and affect the function of the external voltage regulator given that they are both connected in parallel across the brush leads.
very nice and a good choice of music as well
4:27 for those here to see the strike
nice job on the landing, smooth as butter!
Thanks a lot!
Nice. How many hours have you logged so far?
about 140 in this aircraft
Still watching... and still planning to start a build!!
do it.
Love it! I want one! What modifications you did from original plans? I liked the series of build videos for canopy as one example.
everything is built per plans except the fuselage is 2 inches wider and I built the forward hinge canopy modification.
Looking good! Do you have an updated all around tour of your plane on your channel? Would love to see the entire airframe/avionics/engine tour of how your cozy is set up.
Thank you Matthew. I have never done that. Not a bad idea.. I will try to get that video for you soon. Thanks for watching and commenting
May all your landings be as smooooooth as that one.
Thanks T Rabbit
I was still waiting for you to touch down when you turned off on the taxiway! B-U-T-T-E-R-!-!-! Thx for sharing!
Thanks Craig!
first off thanks Robert for still making these videos!!! might want to look at the jacks that come in the ford Superduty trucks. It would probably take up less room, easier to operate, less likely to come apart on you.
I will check it out
Alright, back to the airport. Just another 2% and I will be ready to fly without paint or interior. Just need to get the pics into the FAA and wait.. Keep the videos coming. It does help motivate.
Glad the video helped at least someone!
That's a very violent 'shimmy' to be sure - When you called it a shimmy I wasn't expecting anything that bad! Looking at several other Cozy built aircraft that I follow, your geometry appears much different from all the others. When deployed, your strut is certainly more vertical than everyone else's and the wheel assembly looks more vertical in it's attachment to the strut too. On all other aircraft that I'm familiar with, the wheel axle trails the strut by lots more than yours does - With the axle further behind the strut and the strut angled back a few degrees more I'm pretty sure your problem would disappear. Check out the nose gear on several other planes and I'm sure you'll see the differences. Hope this helps ...
I will do that at or next fly in coming up soon. Thanks
crazy!!! glad you got that on video... i was expecting to see some slight turning of the wheel putting vibration on the front... not holyshit, spin in every direction, freak out wheel!!!
You and me both!
Great video! Really look forward to solving this issue. Mine does the same about every 6mo
Thanks Russ. Ive noticed mine will happen usually on very rough runways only
What is the break free force you've measured on the pivot? I fought with this for a while, after I rebuilt my nosegear using Nate's new machined fork. I had too much stiction (force required to break free and begin to caster the fixture) which meant I was dragging a brake on takeoff because I couldn't get it to track straight (it was twisting the strut instead of the caster pivot). If I loosened it off to reduce stiction, it then would shimmy, because the friction was too low once it did start to move. I tried oiling the oilte washers, but this didn't work. What I ended up doing to solve it was using high-molybdenum grease (specifically, Honda M-77 paste) on the load bearing surfaces. This leaves a lubricating layer of molybdenum even after the carrier grease gets squeezed out. I then tightnened the Belleville stack until I got 8-9 lbs of stiction, measured at the wheel axle. This solved it for me.
Seems like there is an induced asymmetry between the nose wheel & either of the rear landing strut wheels.. A dragging brake on either of the rear wheels might cause this but in any case it is a dynamic event that probably will disappear at deceleration. Measuring the distance from either rear strut wheel to the nose wheel will probably not manifest the the event.
I still haven't measured it.. We can play with it at Rough River though
Instructed to fly runway heading but turns on course immediately after take off...Great video!
yea the controller amended the initial request from runway heading to cleared on course after departure. They are great guys and help me often
Making it look smooth and easy. Would love to see some more walk arounds of the finished plane and any work you've continued doing on it.
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for the video. I needed that. Safe flights.
Thanks, you too!
Nice
Thanks
Beautiful build, you say pretty good. I say very good! One thing about that plane,,,,, uhh the designer claims utilitary category. +4 -1 right. The long easy, the e racer and the velocity are all rated like +6 or 7 and - 4 or higher. I bet the designer fudged hugely conservative so no one is tempted to hot rod it! Same for retracts. Uhh in my dreams,,, I ,d love the E Racer/ Bercuet retracts and just use it as a 2 + 1 and bigger sump tanks and the 220 HP U L turbo normalized engine and run with the Glasair and Lancair 360 guys!!!!
Good point!
Uhh, I know your done but a three inch contour blending at the wing and vertical the wing reduces friction drag at the roughly ninety two or three degree intersection. Good for a few knots extra free airspeed! Easy enough to do!
Thanks for sharing
Very nice, and I'm envious of your weather..and your cheap gas!! But at 4:54 on your base to final, you're awfully low, and dragging it in for quite a while there. If you had an engine failure on base, you'd be right in those trees, no hope of making the runway.
You are right about that. Still trying to get that approach better
@@cozy4build245 It's a constant quest! In my Cozy I stay at 90 kts on downwind, I drop the nosegear at midfield downwind. Abeam the numbers I pull back power and slow to 85 kts and start to descend. As I turn base I drop the landing brake, and decelerate to 80 kts. Turning final I am normally at about 500 feet, and reduce to 75 (80 if it's gusty). I try to be at 70 kts over the numbers (75 if it's gusty) and then just hold it in ground effect and bleed off speed until the mains touch down. It's taken a while to get consistent, and for a while I was dragging it in at low altitude like you are in this video. The Cozy holds energy and doesn't want to come down/slow down!!
Your cozy looks great.
Thank you! 😊
I know that feeling. I hit 9 seagulls while landing in an Aztec. Four on the leading edges, one in left landing gear, three in the engines, and one at the top center of the windshield. Sad to say, but there is nothing you can do to keep this from happening.
Oh wow!
Glad you`re fine and the Rutan`s creation too. Stupid birds... Good thing it`s a pusher, prop is safe. I dream to fly in it some day, but not a chance, sadly.
Absolutely essential to verify what the runway conditions are before attempting a landing…. 🤣
Charlie Oscar Zulu Yankee!
LOL
"Sorry, what's the type of aircraft again?" If I had a dollar for every time I heard that question from ATC.... :)
LOL. My controllers know my plane well since I am always bothering them in the pattern or doing low approaches. They are all great guys to me. This time it was another pilot flying a cirrus that didn't know. After I landed the tower instructed the cirrus to "follow the cozy, you can get a good look at it"''. Thanks for your comment. Your video's are awesome. Keep it up.
That looks wonderful!
Thank you Daniel
Please show me the device you refer to as the speed brake. Did you need repairs after the bird strikes or just cleaning? Nice airplane.
No damage, just cleaning
Fantastic landing! Enjoyed your video, keep posting.
Thanks, will do!
sooo cooool!!!!
thank you Carolin
omg!!!! u got some cleaning to do!
Yes!!
Glad YOU and the cozy will be able to wash up and keep going!!!
Us too!
Man when i saw the video caption i feared the next to worst (worst being cozy down)... All I could think of was the ravens and vultures that circle the desert... Always seem to be in the flight path near my house....
I was lucky for sure!
No damage and I bet you're happy about that ...
very happy
You make mention that it is amazing that God gives you this ability to have these amazing views. I was thinking the very same thing just before you wrote it. He is quite amazing. Thank you for sharing the amazing footage.
That's insulting to the engineer of the plane and camera.
Absolutely!
Hitting a bird on a motorcycle. . . there are little piece of meat all over us, , ,🤢
its scary all of a sudden out of nowhere. Bam
Glad there's no damage! There's a site to report bird strikes. They want you to mail a tissue sample in so they can identify the bird species using DNA. wildlife.faa.gov/home
Nice. Thanks for the flight…
You bet
Amazing!!!!
You are!
