    Thanks for the video Tom, this was very helpful. Do you ever use multi band compressors for dialogue?

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger 3 дня назад

      Good question! Yes, I do use a multi band compressor in my dialogue chain. I like to set it for a very mild amount of compression, with the most active compression on the high midrange. I find this helps to keep the harsh bits of dialogue tucked in.

    Thanks for the super clear explanation on a confusing topic! I do a lot of work on short films that go to festivals where there is usually no guidance given on loudness. TV/streaming is louder than cinematic screening so I assume I should play it safe and do cinematic loudness. What do you all think?

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger Месяц назад

      Technically you should have two separate level mixes, -24 LUFS for TV/streaming, and -27 for DCP screening in theaters. Since most indie short or even feature length films have limited theatrical screenings, the -24 mix will be used most often.

    Hi Tom, great videos! I have a question regarding your video. You mentioned loudness levels, and I'm curious to know the specific loudness level for FM Radio Station Commercials? Additionally, I believe the standard loudness for TV commercials is -24 LUFS. Could you confirm if this is correct? Thanks!

The only question i have would be , is there any wau other than ising dolby atmos to create a panning effect that comes from above or below instead of simply front back or sides?

    • @tomefinger

      There are some settings in binaural mixing that are supposed to influence height, but I have not heard anything convincing, and that seems to be the general opinion. ATMOS, with ceiling speakers, is the best for sure.

    I was checking a mix and trying to stay within these guidelines and played something on Netflix for comparison, everything sounded wayyy louder than my mix. Is there some loudness compensation going on when you stream Netlfix? Because the difference was huge compared to my mix, which is around -24 LUFS long term, I swear it was more than twice as loud. I was playing Netflix from my computer btw, because I know some TVs have some settings that mess with the audio levels.

    Thanks Tom! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with this community. One note, and please correct me if I am mistaken. I believe at 2:41 you switched the loudness specs with regard to film vs TV and streaming. I believe you meant to say: - 24 LUFS +/- 2 for theatrical - 27 LUFS +/- 2 for TV and streaming Thanks again.

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger 5 месяцев назад

      Hey, I appreciate you looking out, but that is what I meant to say. -24 is for TV and streaming and -27 is for theatrical. The outlier is Netflix, which asks for their streaming files at -27 theatrical spec. All this really means is that there is 3 more dB headroom at -27, so the loudest stuff can be up to 3dB louder.

      @@tomefinger Thank you so much for the insight! This makes complete sense and I stand corrected. Once again, thank you for the information. This is super awesome.

      Hello…In Film should we go for TV/streaming LUFs,cuz we gonna premiere it on theater but gonna put out the film in streaming Platform… Any advice?

    • @tomefinger
      @tomefinger 3 месяца назад

      @@neuuyear I generally like to mix at DTV or streaming spec at -24 LUFS. Then for the theatrical DCP file, I lower the 5.1 mix file 3dB to -27. The surround channels should stay up though, as theaters calibrate their surrounds 3dB down. I know it's a little crazy to sort out. So, you should lower the LCR and LFE channels 3dB and leave the surrounds at the same level. I do this with clip gain, and then render the gain changes to the files. (Advanced Tip: if you change the LS and RS channels .1dB, which is barely anything, then they can be rendered with the LCR and LFE as a group and not mess up the initial -24 LUFS 5.1 mix file group.)

    Do you add SFX elements that are only heard in the M&E and not on the English (or original language) version mix? I generally build a full fill M&E after I've done dialogue edit, and with dialogue muted, then keep the stuff I've added for the sake of the M&E in the full mix. Also, have you used tone synthesizing software like iZotope (product name escapes me) to create tone to fill in gaps in DX where the PFX have been moved to FX? Thanks for the video!

    • @tomefinger

      Hey, I like to put the de-esser first, because it is band specific, best to take that out first, then those frequencies won't be causing your compressor to jump, then hit it with a soft compressor.
