Comparing it to 50 shades of Grey? Are you serious? Once you start reading, keep a notebook and write characters names down and work out whose narrating. I’m glad you enjoyed the novel eventually.
nice vido more pleas!
World War 2 was a Terrifying time because no one was allowed to be Creative and Do Activities that involved using your own thoughts and Anne Frank in secret Broke That Rule by writing in her Diary all the time whenever she could and That’s Powerful!✊🏻
One of the greatest books written - ever.
They keep trying to square the circle of uniting Jesus & Machiavelli with damage to both worlds which the American founders purposely tried to avoid in the new Republic. They well knew both the good & ill of religion. But today there seem to be many who would forget the mistakes of the past in order to repeat it.
I wonder if Spengler influenced CS Lewis in The Abolition of Man
HELL REALM EARTH SOUL TRAP LOOSH FARM BETTER NOT BE BORNAT ALL
The argument isn’t so much that willingness to die for a belief makes it true, but rather that it increases the odds that one is *sincere* - sincerely mistaken perhaps, but sincere (not lying) nonetheless. I think evangelicals hurt their cause with both excessive commitment to inerrancy (which I’ll grant for the sake of argument when discussing hell*…) and also the trilemma argument (legend, liar, or Lord). Those aside, personally, it seems that the arguments for the historicity of the empty tomb, postmortem “visions,” and the disciples acquiring a belief they were biased *against* appear to be strong. Where does that leave us? That’s for individuals to decide for themselves. * eternal suffering in hell is absurd and false.
Yeah - though some do view it as a primary persuasive reason. As you eloquently write, the question of whether the martyrdom *justifies* the belief is the ultimate litmus test.
Thanks for your review. I was curious of what the book is about. Doesn’t sound like it’s worth reading. I recommend you read: God: The Failed Hypothesis, by Victor Steinger. He explains how the universe and evolution don’t point back to an intelligent designer.
Thanks for watching. That one is on my radar! Two *very* good books arguing theism I would recommend are Richard Swinburne’s “The Existence of God” (it is hard-going but highly sophisticated) and Josh Rasmussen’s “How Reason can lead to God”.
Should have chosen the Buss translation. Translation can make a huge difference this video is another testament to that.
As a Christian I loath Augustine. On the other hand I wonder how much of the Christian world view Catherine understands. So for example the Biblical narrative about pagan gods is that they’re demons. That the whole world is under a demonic influence. So you live in a world where the pagan Roman Empire runs everything, you are persecuted, you look around and see sexual debauchery, human sacrifice, brutal executions, and gladiatorial matches. Then you come to the place where you have enough power you can actually do something about this. What do you do? Are you going to leave demons in control? No! Absolutely not! So you smash idols, you burn books, you trample sexual freedom. This isn’t seen as restricting liberty. Rather everyone is under the bondage of demons. And you are liberating them from demonic forces. Btw as to your point that Homosexuality doesn’t harm anyone, yes it does. All sexual sin is inherently destructive either to the person themselves or to others. I know this personally because my mother’s sexual sins and drug addiction destroyed my family. Real liberty isn’t found in libertinism. Rather it’s found in being free of immorality, in being secure in your person and effects, in healthy nuclear families, and in peace and prosperity. Sin, especially sexual sin, destroys these things. There would be no rape, stds, child molestation, interpersonal conflict over women, and so on, if people didn’t engage in sexual sins. What good is it to indulge in whatever you want if the things you’re indulging in are literally destroying you and those around you? It does no good at all.
He says "dying is immoral" you quoted it "dying is Immortal".
Yeah, someone else mentioned that here in the comments and I replied that it’s a mistake. My apologies 👍
I agree 100%. First part was superb only to become good later on…
1. Muhammad is a paradigm of moral virtue. 2. Muhammad had sexual relations with Aisha when she was 9 years old. You can't hold both. One has got to go. If not then you must hold: 3. Jesus is a paradigm of moral virtue and lived a more virtuous moral life than muhammad And if so... you must also hold: 4. Jesus should be taken more seriously than Muhammad.
My DVD copy of Flight from Death acquired me an intership at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. I just bought another copy of the DVD, and this book as well. Thank you for providing this review.
I find the 'gospels' extremely boring, idiot-placating propaganda.
I’ve been listening to classic novels all year, and this was one I’m so torn about for similar reasons. Like, the grandeur of the story and subplots are incredible, I just wish AD took a little more time making me care about certain subplots or characters a bit more. I get that the subplots paid off in the end, but it just didn’t have that ‘paid off’ feeling for me after.
Studying him now, great vid
Cheers! Good luck with it.
I really liked Flynn's writing style. Blunt but poetic captures it very well I think. I feel that she does a good job letting the descriptions and dialog speak for themselves without too much authorial explanations.
Love the demons praise, I have been pushing the agenda!
Solzhenitsyn quoted jews where in charge of the gulag camps
Jewish is an ethnicity not an ideology unless specifically stated by the individual. So, unsurprisingly, of course there would be (if Solzhenitsyn said that) “Jews” somewhere to be found?
Depending on the mood you are in, sometimes it looks as if all the characters involved in this book's story are celebrating something.
Mentally ill freak
Pajeets crying on a book that has been debunked for its nonsense. The writer is a joke.
9 years old is disgusting! It sounds stupid trying to make a case for it....
I think this book is an attempt to reach the permanent, enduring part of us. The part of us that reason and logic cannot reach, but that beauty and love can. And if you read it thinking you'll understand it logically/rationally, it cannot have a satisfying ending. But I think for those who are searching for whether or not we have some spark of divinity, and believe that we do, I think the book is more satisfying. And read through that lens, the book is quite remarkable.
Thanks for this conversation
One of the greatest piece of postcolonial writing
Acts 2: 36 Therefore let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.” St. Peter on Pentecost, 50 days after the crucifixion. St. Paul didn't "invent" the idea.
The letter from Raskolnikov's mother to him is actually incredibly meaningful lol. In fact it's somewhat necessary to understanding the Svidrigailov/Dunya relationship which in turn helps you understand the entire point of C&P. You're essentially leaving these books half read, which if fine, but you reveal in this video that there is a TON of meaning you simply aren't getting from these books. Appreciate the honestly though.
From a Christian pov, this is a false and stupid argument. Jesus is divine, the son of God has NO race , he's above being human, you glorified con artists.
I love Graham but he is evasive on this issue. Although disappointing, he is leagues and leagues ahead of most when it comes to no being biased
So it’s like arguing that corn and watermelon are not valid forms of nutrition just because throughout human existence, we have genetically changed them from being a naturally occurring plant in the form we eat them today
Great review. I came here from your link on Goodreads. It's a delightful book, well-captured as about an "ordinary guy" depicted with "extraordinary prose."
I recently read it and hated it. Why? Two main reasons. (1) Characterization inconsistency:There are characters in this novel who behave gently, kindly, and selflessly and times, and then somehow easily do an about-face and behave condescendingly and ruthlessly, like they're possessed by evil spirits. That felt unrealistic to me, and shocking beyond comprehension. I ended up not wanting to care about any of them. (2) Convoluted plot: I couldn't keep up with the storyline shifts and transitions, and the generational shift in the middle of the novel that rendered the main characters in the first half inconsequential, in order to focus on the younger characters? Crazy. I felt like I was reading two novels. Actually, two melodramatic, hyperbolic soap operas. The only reasonably consistent character is Nelly Dean; but even she had moments of inconsistency that seemed out of character. Honestly, I reached the point where I wasn't rooting for anyone, and it made no difference to me who ended up dying in the end.
Ever looked into who was behind the Russian revolution?
Not surprising that Darwin is mentioned a lot in this book. H.G. Wells studied under the scientist Thomas Huxley, who was a huge supporter of Charles Darwin, to the point that he gained the nickname "Darwin's Bulldog".
Ignorant Clown
Oppy = Truthophobic
This is my favorite book of all time, I read it 3 times in a 2 month period
The court room scene mentioned in the review sounds fascinating. I would love to write a long book about one scene , which really, is three generations, fighting over how the work force should work while unaware and aware that nothing is accomplished. Let's say 785 pages of HR drama-lit!!!
Hey Brother, this is a fantastic analysis of an incredible book. Much appreciation for your efforts, it is hard to find good summary anywhere online
Thanks! It is certainly underrated.
It's it possible that you're the idiot and don't understand a word of what you've read? Firstly you can't even say his name (which is a tell). Secondly, when there's a point to be made, and someone ends up disliking the work, it's because their own ego is hiding the point from them. My favorite contemporary example is the movie Revolver. The people who need most to learn its lesson absolutely hate the movie. I might suggested that every critique you've made of the book is your actual opinion of yourself.
Life is a disease with a horrible prognosis
