Fun fact: This may have been inspired by a very real incident in which a U.S soldier in Afghanistan was struck in the leg with an RPG round. The round failed to detonate, but had punched straight through his leg and had become lodged inside, effectively impaling it. The round was eventually removed by a surgeon team, who had to work very carefully around the live ordinance, and afaik, that soldier - although losing the leg in the process - went on to an otherwise full recovery.
