Alice in Borderland - A Few Cards Short of a Deck | Waggish Reviews
My friend dusted off his PS1 and he has a Monster Rancher game tho it wasn't what we expected. It was a pogo racing game and boy did we lose our sh*t playing it late at night and drunk af. everyone fell off the platform and didn't reach the finish line because of all the laughing. Anyways, this was big in the Philippines. Almost everyone who watched it back then probably remembers it. Suezo is quite famous compared to the other characters perhaps because of the funny voice acting of the local dub. Too bad the ending OST Flame Of Love by Sweet Velvet isn't on spotify, I really like that song.
You're like the third person from the Philippines who commented on this video. It must have been seriously popular there
They have the monster rancher line but region locked I've been waiting since then for it's global release
which one are you referring it?
I preferred monster rancher to pokemon and Digimon, but no one else I knew cared about it, :(
I feel you. The amount of🤔 I get when I ask my friends if they remember it and then 😮 when I show pics and describe it is crazy. BTW the reddit thread is super nice and welcoming if you're looking for other MR fans.
Im a fan monster rancher.
There's still a few of us around!
I loved Monster Rancher card game, thank you for this video.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
It’s crazy how much media it had at the time for it to just kinda disappear
Whereabouts are you from? I had people from reddit telling it was shown late night in their home country and had zero marketing 😅
@@waggishwonderland I’m from the United States
season 3 was bad
How so?
That anime was aired in Brazil in the early 2000. I watched as a kid and even got the game, but I lacked any of the "special disks" that gave special monsters. Was a ok show in that pokemon era.
Did you enjoy the game? I think fans who watched the show first was disappointed that the game was so different.
Because this one never was showed in europe. foxkids or cartoon network had diffrent show usa or eu... I cant remember because it was never showed here. so i might only be i see comments asia or some america parts
The maker of this video says they watched it on the BBC, IE a brit... So it was shown in certain parts of Europe. I bet Spain got this show and probably France.
@Zeiss120 I definitely saw it way back, and I'm from Germany.
As people have said, it was shown in Europe and as a Brit I watched it on TV.. But it was poorly marketed
Pokémon > Digimon > Yu-Gi-Oh > Monster rancher was dead last so no one cared about it. The character designs weren't original or memorable, it was a product of its time which got lost in the mix.
The designs were original. I think the presentation wasn't memorable and as you said, got lost in the mix.
I don't know whether I played Monster Rancher 2 first or watched the anime during the early 2000's in the Philippines but regardless, I watched the show every Thursday night when it was aired and I find it more serious compared to Pokémon's plot and tone. The monsters in the show can die just like in the game which made me a bit upset whenever I saw one on screen but I suppose the show teaches us that it's part of life. I don't I actually saw the ending of the show properly but I did saw the part where Genki and his friends finally defeated Muu, and he came back to human world while it was raining and his friends cheered him on. However, I don't think that's how the end really is. I guess I need to rewatch the entire show again after 20+ long years.
This why I liked the show. It wasn't overly cute or innocent. It had a much more realistic element while still being a kids show. You can also watch the full epsiodes show on youtube :D
Card Captor Sakura got another season, so :)
Yeah... - Alice (the co-owner of this channel) is very happy lol I'm just dreaming of a reboot of monster rancher
Great video but the audio is too bass
Thank you! Eurgh, yeah, audacity...it was so fiddly this time for recording. What was even weird is if you listen to the video on an android phone it's fine. But if you listen to it on iPhone it's scratchy. No idea how that's even possible
if they remade this game with the cd summon system using steam cards and the training/ tournament system that was in monster rancher, used jade cocoons taming and fusing system it would be the ultimate beast catching game imo
This is a smart idea. I think Koei are really set in their ways when it comes to the game. It will need some new blood at the company to be ambitious and go for stuff like that.
Didn't even occur to me it disappeared from anime history I'm more annoyed that we didn't get video games on it for a long time.
There was a recent game in 2022 called ultimate kaiju. But they really focus on their Japanese market. I wouldn't say it's disappeared yet but it's on its way. The fact the my friends are all like '🤔 why does that sound familiar? ' when I ask them if they remember monster rancher, are signs that in the western world, it will be forgotten unless the creators do something special.
Den Hit Dat Subscwibe buttun!
I spent 10 years trying to figure out the name of this show lol 😅
!! Well I'm glad this video solved that mystery. There are full episodes on RUclips if you want more of a nostalgia trip
Lack of merchandise sales
More so than lack of marketing?
VN better and it explains it better
I want the VN so badly. Hopefully I can get it one day. If I do, I might do a blind playthrough 👀
Another thing… the extra footsteps they hear behind them are very much real. They’re just from an incorporeal entity, Hanyuu, that only people above L3 can hear.
Yeah, I like the reveal of that in Higurashi: Kai. In hindsight it would have been interesting to look closer at the supernatural aspect of the Hinamizawa Syndrome instead of just sticking to the more medical explanation.
@@waggishwonderland honestly, yours in one of the best videos on the subject! There are far too few considering how good and popular the anime was. It did devolve a bit after Kai but yeah, it was really good. It’s a little funny that by apologizing constantly, following them around, and sitting beside their bed at night, Hanyuu is actually making people with the syndrome way worse and more paranoid! I also wish we actually had shots of the parasite in the anime. Apparently they were able to find specimens in living affected people but we never clearly see what it looks like or how it operates, which is a shame. I wish there was also more explanation as to how it came about. Is it really linked to Hanyuu and her people coming to the village and introducing this foreign agent on the humans? Like in the alien story? Or did it kinda develop on its own, in the swamp or something? Anyways, loved your video 😸
I also just remembered something! It seems people of Hinamizawa were fully aware of some kind of infectious agent at some point in the past, and that’s why the dissection tools kept in the shrine were created. They also somehow found out that the parasite is dead in a dead host and therefore, they needed to dissect the intestines of living infected people who probably had reached L4 or L5 and made others eat it. As gross as it is, it was their only way to create some kind of primitive vaccine, by exposing them to the most toxic form of the parasite, but without eating the brain, which probably would have given them immediately L5, so it’s possible there’s still some byproduct, eggs, or toxin like you said, present in the intestines that could be used to try and vaccinate people from the disease without giving them the most contagious and dangerous parts. Maybe Hanyuu’s people had a hand in that very discovery, they knew of the disease, they most likely brought it around, as it is hinted they are somewhat demonic with their horns, glowing pupils, claws and whatnot, saw what it did to the humans, and came up with the rules about leaving and coming in, and a form of vaccination.
lol I swear you are freaking inspiration incarnate. I was checking out the fact you liked my comment, (thank you by the way!!!), and accidentally read again the part about not eating the brain part of my comment, and then something hit me like a mad truck!! PRIONS!!! That would make sooooo much sense! You probably know already, but the proteins that go rogue and cause Mad Cow Disease?! How perfect would that be! Back in the 80s they were barely studied, no one knew of Mad Cow disease or Kuru pretty much in the public until the massive outbreak in the 90s. You can’t see it in a microscope at the time, too small, it’s not a parasite or a virus or bacteria or fungus, the usual suspects of disease, and they would have been clueless about them and of course would think it was a parasite they could not see instead! Of course in the real disease, you can see the effect physically and visually on the brain after death, as it looks nothing like a normal brain anymore, so it may differ from the anime, but it would make so much sense as to why these people are losing their minds! Prions very much affect behavior, and if the prions in the anime are different, the symptoms would be different from our normal Mad Cow disease or CJD or Kuru. In real life, it affects the body a lot more, but in the anime, it may cause less noticeable physical symptoms, like the laughing hysterics they get into, which isn’t unlike Kuru, or Shion becoming incontinent, as well as pronounced tics of the limbs. It even can lie dormant for decades before suddenly waking up and wreaking absolute havoc on the brain, just like it can in the anime! I can’t believe I never even thought of this theory before! I know the anime pretty much says without question it was indeed a parasite and it could only be found in living specimens, but prions would have made so much more sense when you think about it!
Wow, I did not know about the prions. It’s a really interesting theory if you want to explore the disease more medically for sure! If it were to explained medically though, it would likely be a hybrid of a number if diseases all melted into the Hinamizawa Syndrome. I’m glad you seem to like the video and theories 😊
5:16 thats hilaru no go, another manga the creators made 15:28 i believe this is the original death note idea where its an elementary kid and there was also an eraser where you can erase the names in the book.
Wait so light (or the main character) could have been an elementary kid? I wonder if they went with that the manga/anime would have been as dark as it was
And yeah, I'm definitely going to check out Hilaru no go soon 😁

great coverage! Digimon was not afraid to hit alot of notes kids were dealing with, They were supposed to just sell kids a product, instead they decided challenge those kids, And make this show about talking computer beasts into an allegory about being a kid & growing up
I whole heartedly agree with you. They manage to successfully tell an important message in this show that I'm sure was originally created to help sell toys and merch. Not many shows let alone cartoons talk about this struggle young ppl have, but they did a great job. Thanks for watching too!!
I totally agree. Digimon is truly something special and vastly underrated. I love seeing how much the cast from various seasons grow from the first episode to it’s last. Even though the seasons are around 60ish episodes you grow attached to them and their partners which makes saying goodbye all that more bittersweet.
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing. Any advice on dealing with Japan's summer heat?:D
Aww thank you! So advice: Buy neck fans. Having the hand held one makes it annoying to carry around. Neck fans are amazing Drink plenty water of course and use ton of sun screen ;) Get a UV umbrella, they help a lot. During 12-3pm try to be inside a mall, arcade or maybe a restaurant for luncj. Most places have air conditioning and there's so much to see inside. There's also cooling wipes you can get in 7/11 and family marts. They have a bit of a weird smell to them though, like methanol. Just as a heads-up :) When are you planning to go to Japan?
@@waggishwonderland Thank you a lot wasn't expecting to get such a big list of suggestions:D Sadly I am not going anywhere :D Hopefully someday :D Someone I know are going this summer so looking for some information for them just in case :D
@@avatarLT ah. Well definitely go whenever you get the chance 😄

Interesting video. makes me want to look more about k-pop history and earlier bands :)
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it :)
As someone who has watched the anime all the way through Rei, and is currently reading the VN, this is my theory. HS is a supernatural noncorporeal psychic parasite transmitted by contact with Hanyuu, her people's descendants, or other carriers. Thus explaining why it can't be found. Given that Hanyu is literally Oyashiro, this would explain the "Curse of Oyashiro". HS is LITERALLY the Curse just as Hanyuu is Oyashiro. This would also explain why people infected with it have such a strong affinity with Rika (outside of the local superstitions), given her connection with Hanyuu. It also explains the whole origin of the "queen carrier" phenomenon while also explaining why there isn't actually one. Basically she acts as sort of a stress relief valve. Thus her death would greatly increase the stress of the town... leading to a possible but not guaranteed village wide L-5 outbreak as someone they all loved died.
That makes so much sense. I think I definitely got preoccupied with explaining it medically and completely looked away from the supernatural, but I can definitely see this theory holding up.
@@waggishwonderlandyeah there’s an explicit supernatural element/component to it. It’s actually brought up in the After Parties of the VN. You should REALLY check out the VNs. They are sooooo much more in-depth and provide so much more info. The anime really butchered the early arcs with how much they condensed & cut out.
@@Kenshiro3rd I definitely want to check out the VN's for sure! 😊
Great and informative video, thanks! I'll make sure to send this to new friends if they seem interested in V-Kei or Anime Music Culture overall.

Regarding Hinamizawa Syndrome, I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
🤣 sounds costly
If you wanna do a follow up to this sort of stuff, i recommend looking into Higirashi Outbreak. It shows what happens if the world finds out about Hinamizawa Syndrome and tons of people go into L-5. Oddly enough i haven't seen anyone else even mention Higurashi Outbreak so you'd probably be the first to even bring it up (this us a comment and not a video so it doesnt count 😉). I watched Higurashi Outbreak like a decade ago so my memory is fuzzy, but i do remember it gave me Raccoon City (Resident Evil) vibes 🤔
I've actually seen Outbreak, although that might have been after this video. It was pretty good, and I think it would support another theory someone mentioned in the comments. People suffering from shared delusions (can't remember its medical term).
Verdens bedste RUclips kanal det kunne ikke have været bedre
Something new we learned thanks to the mangas (Higurashi Meguri) is that Hanyuu is actually the one that has a deep connection with the Hinamizawa Syndrome, as Eua explained to Satoko that if she wanted to make a tragedy happen onwards (since no one went crazy in all those worlds she killed herself) she would have to find a way to make people fall into L-5 state because "without she in the Gameboard that wouldn't happen anymore" (she was talking about Hanyuu not being present anymore in the human world). This hints that somehow, Hanyuu's presence is the one that somehow influences people's body to develop the HS and probably her being the origin of the Syndrome...
That's really interesting. I only have 4 volumes of the manga, and no stores sell it anymore where I live, so manga lore is completely unknown to me. But I feel it's slightly hinted at in Higurashi Kai, that Hanyuu is linked to the disease.
Ash no simp jutsu
