Walking East Devon Way Link to Woodbury Castle from Exmouth via Exton
This waymarked link is an alternative to the classic East Devon Way from Exmouth to Woodbury Castle -
It goes via Exton and Woodbury avoiding the traffic on Higher Marley Road and the awkward main road crossing at the top -

Summer Solstice Alignment - with animation
Просмотров 87Год назад
Creating the Summer Solstice alignment at our stone circle - It took a few years to solve the problems we enountered, but the greatest of these was the weather - Several times we had fairly clear skies that were spoilt by cloud on the western horizon - Also includes an animation of the sunset showing the eventual system we adopted - It was very successful and we placed the backsight (Mars stone...

intresting place bleak house, I camped in the area just by lowa dunna goat, known as dicks well on a ten tors training, brutal place but pretty
i,v never seen a train on the rails i,v seen a few off the rails
I don't remember there being steps up to Goat Island. Maybe I just never found them!
thank you for a fascinating video, it all makes perfect sense and makes you wonder how the ancients knew all this, it certainly deseves more scientific study
Amazing Dad. Thanks for being such a great Dad. I can't wait to go camping in amongst the stones again. R.I.P x
Very informative thanks.
Nice walk, I have to do this route to Woodbury Castle. Thanks
I like these link routes you've developed. And I'd like to walk the whole East Devon Way.
I'm looking forward to it
Lots of work but the trial and error paid off, well done. The animation helped me understand the process. Thanks
Cheers! Yep! The weather has been so wet, so have been a bit stuck inside, so amused myself making animations - Anyways got out the other day and have a new East Devon Way video in the pipeline -
The animation is a good way to explain the ‘thinking’ behind the execution. The actual event looked soooo easy, but the animation showed the amount of thinking needed so that it just went in. Well done. BBLU
Proper engineering!
I like the sound track.
Yeah! I thought you would - Its not to everyones taste, but I spent a lot of time and trouble making sure I'd got it just right !!!
It was such a historic day when that stone was rocked into its final resting place!
Yep! Neofantastalithic1
My wife and I back in the 80's would walk from the pub in Colyford along the river into Colyton and then on to Whitford where I lived. Thank you for this nice video glad you picked a nice fine day.
Hi, sorry so long to reply - been on holiday - walking in Portugal - Yeah! Its a lovely walk and flat too for a few of mty older friends - Cheers Mike
I was born in Whitford back in 1954. When you turned off from walking over the main bridge over the river and you say you turned to walk on the little track that was part of the old road to Musbury and the old bridge. I used to play down by the river with my friends.
Ah! Memories - Yep! I remember the old bridge - It seemed endlessly long and narrow - reversing if you met something
@@mikejurassic Are you from around there? I moved away back in the early 80's. I also remember the bridge you mentioned at Musbury, We would ride our bikes on the main road and turn right at Turn Pike cottage down the lane and past the farm on the right until the lane ended and walk across the field to the bridge.
@@oldtimer4863 Yeah! I live in Beer - sometimes had a picnic there by the river as a kid - then later used to drink at the Hare and Hounds - seem to remember landlord was called Bill ...
@@mikejurassic My local was The Shute Arms, also in Colyton The King Fisher, The Gerrard Arms and Colyton Club. I now live in Mid Devon. Many of my family are burred at Shute church.
You make me nostalgic for a summer heat wave. The inset video is a nice touch.
Cheers - its not been hot lately in Devon, but it has been mild -
Nice to see you and Jake enjoying yourselves. Thank for the wet hat tip, now then “where did I leave that heat wave” 😂 M Y B H
Thanx - good to hear from you Trev -
Sorry about your arm but nice insets, still and video. I've got to get back out on the trail soon.
Hi John, great to hear from you - the camp was a while back now, but been busy doing other stuff - got a part 2 to come soon - Yeah! My arm, seem to bruise and cut so easily these day from minor bumps - any way all good here - looking forward to your next adventure -
Dylan via Ferry on Dartmoor -- doesn't get much better than that, also your own great soundtrack.
Yeah! It was one of those balmy nights with sun and no wind and everything was just right - thanx for the compliment on soundtrack - I must get around to doing some more - but its a winter thing really - when its raining
Yeah! Thanx John, always good to hear from you - I'm looking forward to your next adventure - I remember being out in the wilds of Canada around Wawa and Ottawa - and doing portages with Ron T -
I like the cooking tip, very clever. I'm always amazed by these Dartmoor landscapes.
Yeah I think Jake's hooked now - he's great company out in the wild - its great wilderness - just wish it was bigger
@@mikejurassic I could tell you were having fun -- good company indeed.
Wow How very interesting & stunning, with clear sky .Keep warm! Much Enjoyed.TKU
Glad you enjoyed it
Simon Wood has a gift and a steady hand. We’ll fine him. M Y B H
He's a nice guy - had a great morning with him
Very interesting ParkTour again of your hiking area..Mike,Well,done!TKU

Nice to see Jessie out with the crew. Very brave -- I'm still waiting for the weather to warm up.
Yeah! 'Twas very cold - but we all thoroughly enjoyed the company etc - I'm looking forward to your next one - Did you watch the Budleigh Towers one of mine? ruclips.net/video/I5Sz9cJyf1Q/видео.html Not up to your standard, but it was more of a reporter type effort -
Hi Mike. Did you bump in to a chubby, ginger bearded backpacker, checking for directions between Postbridge and the East Dart Waterfall on the walk out? That was me! I thought you looked familiar and now I see this video to confirm it. I ended up camping on a dry patch at the top of Cut Hill but will definitely carry on to Fur Tor next time - looks beautiful. Was a pretty cold night but a great weekend for weather overall. Thanks for the advice. Ta-ra!
Hi, yep that was me & couple of my kids - I'm gonna try Cut Hill one day - was there room for 2 or 3 tents there? There's is plenty on room at Fur Tor, though some of it is a bit wet - Cheers
@@mikejurassic I had to walk around it quite a bit looking for somewhere dry and flat, lots of marshy stuff there, but you could get 2 or 3 tents in I think, although maybe scattered about a bit. Looking at your video now, I will definitely opt for Fur Tor next time. The ground looks much better and those views....
Gotta love so wonderfully polished stones. We have several such beaches here in Nova Scotia as well. Awesome! Bruce and Otis
Cheers - Long ime since I was in Nova Scotia - 1973 I think
Wow Absolutely amazing content with great personality guys 😍 stay blessed 🤗💟🇵🇰👍🤝
Cheers - Thanx
What a pair of adventurers. Nicely done, boys. I might wait for slightly warmer weather.
Hi John, Yep the vernal equinox is a lot colder than the autumnal one, but it was still a good trip - I'm looking forward to your next adventure - Carol and I had a 3 day walk from Taunton up to the north coast of Somerset; which was very sucessful a few weeks back, but we stayed in pubs - its part of my research for the "Lias Way" coast to coast - cheers
So great to have such wonderful routes to follow. Even the short and little walks do wonders for a person...just nice to get outside! Thanks for the explore! Take great care from Bruce and Otis here in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Cheers Guys
Now I want to explore the East Devon Way. Looks quiet and meditative at this time of year. Thanks for the walk.
Yeah - was a bit windy on the mic at times - took a bit of editing
Nicely done.
Hi logan - Dunno why, but having difficukty replying to your comment so hope you see this - Here is a link to one of my other videos of a similar trip with one of my sons - ruclips.net/video/yIV1lAEJggY/видео.html Basically you follow the poles demarking the firing boundarys - they take you to within roughly half a km of the head of the leat - hope this helps, if not get back to me - cheers Mike
I can't see your comment and question on the site - but I had an email with your question -
This thing has interested for yrs now made me get state certification in advanced machining
Yeah! Great fun
Filey Brigg, Whitby Jet -- what exotic names.
Nice. I'm thinking of maybe trying to get to Fur Tor via the Tavy Cleave, will have to see what the route's like.
It's do-able, have a go
Fascinating formation. You're venturing far afield!
Is it rolling, Bob? Yes, very much so. Amazing landscapes, dramatic weather, and nice to see Jake on a trans-Dartmoor family hike.
Kool !very Interesting, I like!Bet that wine tastes awesome.
Yeah! Jake pretty good at wine, but beer is his forte
I note that everybody should take part in the consultation on the Dartmoor National Park changes to the rules starting on the 20th of Sept - the consultation that is. Most of it is sensible but they are intending to ban hammock camping and close off lots of small areas around the park which might affect peoples access. Go to their website and subscibe to all their emails as the consultation itself is not yet listed. Please pass this message on to interested parties. This is one of very few areas in England that allows us to wildcamp, do make our voice heard.
Thanx for that - I have filled out the consultation -
Astounding! Great discoveries and thanks for the water purification demo. Good to see you back in Dartmoor.
Cheers John - Yep! It was a nice little short trip - Not so deep into the wilderness parts this time, but parts like this are steeped in history and pre-history
That bow plays great music :-)
Devon's Most Rebellious Town -- I have to go there. Looks like a beautiful walk.
Yeah! A couple of years ago they had another one - An anonymous letter to the council complaining about a lady who had hung her underwear out to dry at the front of the house - Next thing you know, half the town was hanging out underwear in solidarity with her
True rebellion!
Beautiful Walk & Lovely Tour Mike .I feel as though I’m physically there. TKU!
@@luciecowan2072 well - maybe one day
Try a scroggin of your own recipe?
Great word - I'd never come across it before - I had to look it up - I do carry nuts on their own as well
@@mikejurassic it's known as GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) in some places, or as 'trail mix'. Idea is it can be eaten dry on the move (stay hydrated as this aids digestion), or I've added milk to make it a slightly odd breakfast cereal, or added a fair sprinkling to morning portage. The name scroggin was first adopted in NZ, supposedly created from initials of the ingredients - I first heard of and used it when hiking there some years ago. It's high in everything our body needs to stay in good nick whilst hiking. Anyone can invent their own mixture - mine has peanut M&Ms, honey coated dried banana chips, raisins, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, crushed flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, candied orange/lemon peel. I normally snack on it, which can replace need for a mid-day lunch.
@@richardbarrett2317 Sounds great
thank you Mike. Could you see any correlation with modern or even Mayan or Indian calendars with those numbers? Or celestial bodies? Why is the centre in a U shape?
Hi - Sorry for tardy reply - It was lost in the system somehow - I have found many of the these numbers turning up in North America and Canada - Also in Latin America, but I am not an expert in these areas - Why is the 19 at Stonehenge in a horseshoe? - Well I think often these monuments were not actualy calculators, but more a statement of knowledge i.e. - We know these numbers - We don't want to forget them - They are sacred - They are vital to the workings of the Universe - that sort of thing
I'm beginning to love Dartmoor and the great wild camping it has to offer.
Yeah! It's great - this trip was unusual for us as we normally get to the more remote parts, but this time we were on the edge so had veiws of fields in the distance - also with the hot weather it is particuarly dry for Dartmoor; which can be very boggy and normaly requires good leather walking boots - cheers
I would love to visit this area one day. So mystic and mesmerizing ! I love it
Yes - you're right - remote and mostly empty
Need to know what the wine was. 🤔 M Y B H
