The Black and Tans were despicable thugs. Fancy driving an armoured tank onto a soccer match, which was in play, and shooting at the players and innocent civilians in the stands! Ireland suffered brutal oppression under British colonialism for 800 years. When one country rules with such oppression and persecution, it takes a long time to heal.

Tom Hales may have regretted the death of Collins (I believe he was sincere and took no pleasure in it)but he was partly responsible having organised and taken part in the ambush. And so was Collins himself partly responsible having signed The Treaty and parading around West Cork in front of the Anti Treaty Forces (even though he was from there himself). And he knew it too. Both of them knew this and that’s the terrible thing about The Civil War. Hero’s of the state, fighting on the same side pitched against each other - all part of The British Plan. Both men gave so much to The Republic, most of us can’t comprehend. Respect to both and to all on both sides - Irish Men & Women All of them 🇮🇪💚

You seem to forget that de valera was the one to blame he sent Collins to the UK knowing full well that the British wasn't going to give them what he as in de valera wanted and so he made Collins lose face with the Irish public he knew it because if Collins came back with a full independence and withdrawal then de valera wouldn't have had any place in the new government plus he was the only signatory that wasn't executed why because he held an American passport and who let the British k ow there was an uprising happening the the British got a phone call from the American embassy so I would blame DE Valera for all of that disaster

As a West Cork man I am immensely proud of our fore fathers . These people gave their lives for us and none of us have the right to judge them. The Hales family at the fore front of our struggle gave more than most. It is hard to believe now when you drive though our beautiful land that these events ever occurred . My grandfather used to tell us of the days of the dreaded black n tans when he was a teenager and spoke highly of the local people who joined together to take on the enemy. Yes the civil war was a very tragic outcome to that struggle but let us never forget those who were willing to lay down their lives so we could be a free people.♥️

Cohalan, who was the Bishop of Cork often spoke out against the actions of the IRA and threatened to excommunicate anyone partaking in the the fight against the Black & Tans. Now for a man who preaced a lot about God he didn't seem to be in too much of a hurry to meet him because he changed his tune real quick when the IRA threatened to kill him. With regard to the "surrender/false surrender" often wondered why it never seems to be put in the context of the time. As British forces did not respect the surrender of Republican forces from 1916 into 1921 and subsequently executed many who had been taken prisoner, if Republican forces as a loosely organized force were allow that to be a one way street without decimating moral among the ranks. While the narrator says it not an appropriate time to debate, however for a historian context should always trump other concerns, they were already past the point where they believed that the pursuit of their aims warranted the taking of human life. Saying "Mr. X once ate another man's leg for lunch" is quite different from saying "a desperate and emaciated Mr. X while near death once the flesh of a deceased person after months marooned on a desolate island".

    • @TherealBrendanHayesFilmMaker

Given the fact that this was recorded in the centenary year, many felt it was respectful not to discuss it in case it eclipsed the bravery of the volunteers at the time who had endured terrible hardship as we know. Yes the false surrender has been debated over the years and those who deny the British called a false surrender have been questioned by many renound historians as the claim that Barry was "Making it up" were heavily refuted with significant debate. In the 101st year we have discussed why many believe there was a false surrender in this new documentary ruclips.net/video/39aYMyc1KgU/видео.html as those who claim it didn't occur never gave a significant/worthy explanation as to why "it didn't" I suppose after 101 years, ots now left for people to make their own minds up independently.

Most of the comments here are nonsense. We were free in the UK. There is no right of secession in UK Constitution. Every sovereign state is entitled to maintain its territorial integrity. The Auxies were not demonic as they have been presented. As for the crimes of the British Empire: we were just as involved as the English in these. There was no need for a conflict in 1919-21. It was entirely the IRA's fault for starting it. The loyalist terrorists also committed many heinous crimes.

Firstly every comment here is accurate. and secondly freedom to me is not being a second class citizen in your own country, as the Irish Catholics were under British rule. The next point is the erosion of Irish culture through its membership of the EU. As I said, as a trading alliance great as a political union no its UN-democratic and erodes member states freedoms and choices, by stealth .

@@peteroreilly982 We were not second class citizens. We were three times per capita overrepresented in the UK Parliament, the government spent more on us than on people in GB and we were part of a union we were not under ''British rule''. We were British citizens and we are still British in every sense except the strictly legal one. There were no anti-Catholic laws. The RIC was even more Catholic than the general population. The Catholic Church had a very close relationship with the government and there were Catholic chaplains in all British military units. Catholics believe in obeying lawful authority as our government indubitably was. The Bishop of Cork said that killing policemen was ''morally murder and politically of no consequence.'' The subsequent bishop was Cornelius Lucey who was very anti-IRA and he came from Kilmichael! Even then 10% of people in the Republic of Ireland are British citizens. Irish culture has eroded since we split from the UK: bitterly ironic isn't it?

Even Drummond fearful of growing numbers of Catholics from the country coming to Dublin changed the requirement for getting into Dublin corporation from being voted in, to requiring you to be a property owner to get in. So there was always barriers stop Catholics. In relation to being British , if you feel more comfortable considering yourself British that's fine by me, but don't cast your net in a generalised comment about the majority of us being British. Having said that, I do believe in today's situation we would be better off leaving the EU and remaining a trading partner with the UK. They call themselves a beacon for democracy that is a joke. In the 1918 General election, Irish people voted for Freedom if the British government had honoured this then this horrible war would never have happened. Then they call them terrorists. How about burning of Cork City, shooting indiscriminately into a crowd of people at a football match to name just two surely this is not the work of a legitimate government surely this must also be terror? Sometimes you must meet terror with Terror as that is all these monsters understand. My Grandad's family lived in Denroches Cross a few miles west of Cork city. They lived through the troubles but by the end of 1920s they had all left Ireland - his 6 siblings emigrated to the US, my Grandad moved to Manchester England via Short Strand Belfast. He left Belfast after his brother-in-law Thomas Dromgoole aged 20 was shot dead by the auxies on 29.5.1922 . Thomas was in the wrong place at the wrong time, the auxies were on the rampage. What a tragic history Ireland has.

It was the RUC that shot your grandfather's brother-in-law as by this date the unit(Auxiliaries) were disbanded. Lots of Auxiliaries,Black & Tans would later join the Palestine Police Force.

My Grandfather and his brother climbed on top of a (Brit) building in Kinsale and they took the Union Jack and burned it on the spot. They were caught and the Brits kicked the bejazus out of them and also locked them up for a few days. When they were released they went back to the top of the same building and burned the flag again. They did not get caught the second time. My pride knows no bounds.

All the races of the British Isles were treated badly in history, including the English. Think Peterloo Massacre and the attempts to suppress The Chartist Movement. The awful conditions of the wage slaves of the cotton mills. Even the murderous Black and Tans were recruited out of the poverty and unemployment following WW1 The perpetrators were the Norman aristocrats and their descendants who ruled for their own gain. These families still exert influence to this day. Ireland got the worst of it and that cannot be denied.

And rightly so ... Needless to say , He won't be seeing the green fields ..on a Irish moan any more ,But am not sure he did as much EVIL , As Steak Knife !!! Don't I ramble ?
