The thing is, if a tank gets hit, the crew are likely to bail out as a precaution, even if the armor wasn't penetrated, because there is a high chance of something outside the tank being damaged that prevents it from being used efficiently. Of course this doesn't happen always, especially if the tank is under fire from infantry, or if it can back away from the conflict. Modern tanks are somewhat delicate pieces of equipment, and the advancement of anti tank technologies as well as technologies inside the tank (which the modern tank also relies on more heavily) means the tank won't stay at the same fighting capacity after multiple hits, unlike tanks of old. There were some instances of early ww2 tanks taking tens of hits before being taken out of action, because back then the weapons used against them were primarily small cannons firing solid shot, and the tanks were simpler from a technological point of view, meaning damage to running gear, the gun or a penetrating shot were required to make it not effective, whereas nowdays a hit is more likely to cause interior electrical equipment or others malfunction, also due to the more varied types of weaponry used against the tank (this is not a critique of modern tanks, this level of technology is required to survive on the modern battlefield)
