Demon of the fall.......
@@KillerwhaleTRX or Demon of the Autumn, where I'm from 🤣
Aswell as 'strange deja vu' Ive noticed other lyrics in this song refer to old DT tracks, e.g James sings the words 'This dying soul' 'shaking and breaking, left in the cold'
yeah there are a lot of little easter eggs both lyrically and musically. I like this a lot.
I think this was the strongest of the singles they've released. Labrie needs to stick to this range more.
Yea to me theyve gotten better each release.. much better than the singles they have released in the past 10 years
@@MattySOP I agree 100%. Its the first bunch of singles where I've had any of them on repeat since black clouds if im honest!
@@swiftla absolutely agree..
Just ok song .I am not impressed. Most of it I feel I have already heard in other songs. The drumming is boring the same and same from MP.
Any similar bands r U able to recommend that is good, I've been having a hard time finding something similar :(
@@Glide71try haken or caligulas horse
@@Glide71 Will depend on what side of Dream Theater you like the most. I'm rather partial to Riverside. If Dream Theater has their roots in Rush, Riverside would be like Dream Theater if their roots were in Pink Floyd instead.
@@Glide71 Dream Theater has quite a unique sound, but there are few bands that sound a bit like them. Ayreon, Haken, Fates Warning, Nospun, Sons of Apollo and Symphony X come to mind.
I totally get themes, musical ideas, techniques are going to get repetitive. Its hard to reinvent the wheel when you've been doing it as long as these guys have. This is the stuff that comes out! Personally I love it. This is the genre. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the album is like
Hey... first reaction to this masterpiece
I think if you like Guthrie you should listen to steve wilsons drive home and home invasion/regret no9. Both have the most amazing Guthrie solos as well as being great compositions. Just great music.
@@leehulford174 il add it to my list! Thanks so much 🙏
I have a soft spot for Cradle Of Filth. Saw them live two times. One time in a dark music hall. One time on this festival in the afternoon, where the sun shined. You guess which from the two times was more speaking to the mind. This song is really killer.
Sounds like the dark hall is a good shout for this band haha ive never seen these live yet. Ive heard a few songs and maybe 2 or 3 albums in full over the years
Hey guys, apologies for audio being a bit quiet on this particular video. I recommend wearing headphones and adjust the volume a little higher for this one ❤
I think they might have taken inspiration from The VVitch where the devil asks: Wouldst thou like to live deliciously? Great film.
@@jimstewart8122 thats very interesting, I Know Mr Filth is a big horror fan, so it wouldn't surprise me!
Love ur analysis of the album! Btw, the final clean part in Demon of the fall to me is so damn heart-wrenching, absolutely love that track
@@mitfreundlichengruen2337 ah thankyou. I agree, ive listened to it again since this video. I might do a video just for this song and look at it a bit deeper
Thank you for a nice reaction, not often you see someone do MAYH as their second Opeth album. It is kinda controversial among Opeth fans , many are of the opinion this along with the first 2 albums; Orchid and Morningrise are the weakest of Opeths metal era. I like them all but I do think this is the album where they really started to come together, it is much more coherent musically and not random as I can understand the previous albums might be perceived, nothing feels misplaced imo. It only gets better from here though, I´m voting for Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries or Watershed next.
@@donc5428 thankyou! Yes ive heard snippets of the first 2 albums, they are a very different band and tbh I probably won't listen to those old albums on this channel. But the rest, 100% 😍
I see Opeth I hit sub. The fact you have actual musical knowledge\ability is just the cherry on the top Edit: just going forwards in chronological order for next 5 albums or so is a great experience. all of them A or S tier.
@@AkZeal76 im glad I could provide the cheery. Thanks for the comment, looking forward to more Opeth
The last lyric is also the name of the following song..... this album is phenomenal, this was the start of my Opeth journey, each album just seems to outdo the last 🙌 Edit.. you picked the last word thing...I don't know how long it was for me, can't remember as it was so long ago 😂
@@darrenbooker8144 Wikipedia was my freind with that 😅
My favorite.
HEEEY! 👍
I really hope you do the same kind of breakdown for all of their albums. Such a vast expanse of different sounds and experiences from album to album.
Sure thang
The girl at the end of paragraph 1 is Mikaels daughter, Mirjam Åkerfeldt.
Oohhh this album must be played once a week for me to survive. ❤🤘
Decend- the deviant, Luna's Call- Void, Iotunn- access all worlds and new album Kinskip. All i the vein of Opeth. Maybe something you will like. 😀
Awesome suggestions, thanks for those
Nice!! This is the album, in my opinion, that Opeth begins to explore its own sound. The production isn't top of the bill, but perhaps it makes this album even more likeable. Most Opeth fans say that Deliverance has the most beautiful outtro. I disagree with that. For me, it's the outtro of April Ethereal. So bombastic and full with layers and emotion. Enjoy your Opeth trip. Try a similar approach to Between the Buried and me: Parallax ll the future sequence. It's a phenomenal prog metal album.
@@markblaauw4961 cheers Mark, great suggestions as always 👍
You are right. The first, last and Madrigal have lyrics that are kinda "hidden", not used in the actual song. You can find them in the album art. Looking forward to your Opeth journey, next up Still Life.
@@antevunic7461 that was bugging me, thanks man
This album is phenomenal, each song perfectly describes a stage of the story. The story happens in about a year, dividing it in quarters each section is a different station. First the ghost is sad for being separed from his lover, it starts silently watching her. Then he is worried about she forgot the promise that "even death couldn't separe them". After that the sadness turns into ressentmen when he sees she is starting to rebuild her life, he tries harder to make signals haunting her, but she ignores him. Ressentmen then turns into anger and he decides that the only way is to take her with him by force, but in that moment she recognize him, he has turned into a demon, but he couldn't kill her, so he leaves. Defeated he returns to the forest, he understand how things are and can't be changed and choose a place to die in peace. And the lyrics on instrumental passages are 100% intentional, that's a strange choice but it fits the theme of how ghost are invisible to us and his words sound like silence, so they let the music just abstractly describe the mood of them. I suggest you to try the next album Still life, is conceptual too (is about a guy who is expelled from his community and separated from his lover for religious reasons, he returns 15 years after but she has turn into a nun, and for the worse, inquisition is seeking for him), here is when the band peaked in songwritting.
@@zinAab79 thats amazing, thanks for the story and info on the lyrics. I think its a great concept. Im definitely going to have another read and listen
Still life is their magnum opus in my opinion. Most people will say it was blackwater park, but to me still life is a perfect album
So... had you heard the first song already? You clearly seem to know it the way you sing at the same time on key and stuff
@@julien2231 yes! I've heard the whole album several times before recording this video. Its one of the reasons I started doing these listening videos
@@swiftla oh gotcha. So it was your first opeth album, but not the first listen. You need to do otjer albums! :)
There are moments where I swear I can hear Frank Zappa's ghost...
😂 youre right!
HEY! 😂 Just started this video but I heard you ask, the solo in 'April Ethereal' at 9:10 is Mikael, he did a lot more soloing back then, if you hear a more bluesy melodic solo with excellent vibrato and some fast passages here and there it's probably Mikael. Peter does the main solo in 'When' he tends to use more arpeggios and not a great vibrato, imo.
HEEEY😂 this is how we all address each other now, with an Akerfeldt growl of delight. Thanks for the insight into the two guitar styles, il try and spot the difference when I listen again
Mikael was having a fever during recording this album that’s why his vocals seems different. Very excited for your reaction for the rest of their discography
It’s also just a bit different because at the time they were much more black metal
@@illusion9185 thanks very much! Yes looking forward to hearing vocally whats happening on the other albums to
Cool to see someone reacting to this whole album. Theres some interesting live versions of When and April Ethereal on The Roundhouse Tapes and the Royal Albert Hall albums after they got a full time keyboard player that bridge the gap a bit between this and their more recent stuff.
@@Ben_Dawson that sounds awesome, thanks for that. Im actually off to see Opeth in February at the Roundhouse! My first show of theirs
@swiftla Oh man, I'm jealous! I somehow missed out on getting tickets. They are great live, I'm sure you will love it.

@@Scirzo thanks, I appreciate it! I can't wait to dive back in. I hear he has a new album coming to 👀
I enjoy your take on harmony on those classic albums. I'm the composer and keyboard player of Demo Rumudo ( jazz rock from Spain ). I recommend to you Sisyphus, from the band " Seven Impale ". Keep up the good work!
I see you pitch bending the Rhodes on 'Pentaseven', thats a Jam. Cheers for the recommendation to, my fellow keyboarder

@@fredrikrmattsson9065 thanks!
Awesome choice of track and even more so artist Luke - welcome to the genius that is all things Steven Wilson. Such a huge catalogue you could spend months enjoying... Starting with other tracks off this brilliant album is as good a place as any. Luminol, The Holy Drinker & The Watchmaker all have live versions available on RUclips that you should absolutely check out and react to. Luminol live in Mexico city. The Holy Drinker live in Frankfurt. The Watchmaker live in Neu-Isenberg. For Drive Home, you really cant go past the official animation video. Another absolute masterpiece by Jess Cope. The same who made the clip you just watched for The Raven. Dive in - I really look forward to watching and listening to your thoughtful and insightful and educated analysis.
Thanks for the lovely comment and fantastic info, Il add it to my list! Im very intrigued to hear alot more or Mr Wilson. Thanks again
Just stumbled upon this. Thank you for appreciating the harp part I played! ❤ The reason I came onboard was when Mikael wasn't very happy with the synth harp, they didn't know a harpist, he went for a coffee brake and saw an article about me in the news paper. From my end, I just received an email asking if I wanted to participate, and the rest is story! :D Best luck with your channel, Luke!
Ah thanks for explaining the story. I thought it was just my grandad that still read newspapers! That's awesome. Mia, Its really made my day that you found my video and left a lovely comment, thankyou. Love your work on this album 🙌 ❤

From this same album you can check another tracks with Guthrie and Minemann, maybe "The Watchmaker" or "The Holy Drinker" live version both 🔥
awesome thanks for this, il add it to my list!
Bro... im late but your in the rabbit hole now 😂 Id say Still Life, which is perfection, but Blackwater Park is somehow better! Alright start at My Arms Your Hearse and proceed the albums till watershed, not a dud to be found, incredible run of Albums where you will hear the evolution till they're prog rock album's then listen to the prog stuff and the last will and testament will make loads of sence.... good luck! Ive done that, but over 26 yrs so....😂 Edit - first 2 albums are good but a different universe to what opeth is, albiet ideas are working towards the end game, id argue morningrise sounds nothing like MAYH, which is when Opeth truly started being Opeth!!!
Thanks for your comments 👍 I'm definitely going to be in this rabbit hole a while
Think you can do a piano tutorial for one of these songs? xD
That would be fun, which one would you choose though?
@@swiftla oh wow all are good but it'd go for paragraph 6, I really like the chords there. Also, as a huge Opeth fan, I really recommend checking out the song (and also the album) The Moor. Title track is probably my favorite song and if I could learn any song on the piano, like ANY song, it would be that one haha This band is a gold mine, as you'll see : )
@@quercingtime Fantastic thanks, il check it out
Very emotional tune and song. Rare chord progression. That makes this music quite unique.
@@markblaauw4961 yes I agree! I might do a deep dive into the weeds on this one at some point and go more into more detail on the harmony! Cant wait to hear the other tracks

Its Mikaels daughter talking in §1.
well, you started from the worst album. it only gets better after this
I'd take this any day over their first 2 albums.
Far from the worst
True, this TLWT is a miss but hey - at least they keep making albums!
Thanks for another great video. I appreciate your musical views. You will LOVE their (best!) album "Ghost Reveries". (It has got everything from angelic harmonies and vocals to death metal growls and distorted riffs. ) My then 25 yr old son played it to me when it came out... and i was stunned. (Now i have all albums and dvds.) As an old composer (68 years) I might be an unusual fan, but that’s just how it is. Treat yourself to a magic album! 😊 (NB. Don't begin with the live videos. They will ruin the magic.) All the best, from a new subcriber!
@@cwrango hey Curt thanks for the kind words, that means alot from a composer! I don't think its unusual that you're a Opeth fan at all, that's what music's all about, it brings people together from all ages and warps of life. How amazing that its your son that brought it to you and you have that extra connection in music. I will definitely check out Ghost Reveries on the channel 🍻
@swiftla Thanks!! 🎶
