      I first saw Chevalier in the late 1960s when the movie Can-Can was on TV and have enjoyed is his charm and voice since then although I have not listened to any of his songs for quite a while. There are couple of uploads of ""Mais où est ma Zouzou" on RUclips, but they aren't in particularly good sound.

      Check out his Wikipedia entry! Benjamin Bernard Selvin (March 5, 1898 - July 15, 1980) was an American musician, bandleader, and record producer. He was known as the Dean of Recorded Music. According to The Guinness Book of World Records, Selvin recorded more musical sides (on 78-rpm discs) than any other person. One reason for this prolific output is that he recorded for dozens of different record labels during this productive time in the industry, using a different name for each label. His output has been estimated at 13,000 to 20,000 song titles. I found the lyrics on line. I think he was put in the "friend zone".

    Here is a fun fact for those who may be unaware. The advent of electrical recording was in 1925. Prior to that, all sound recording was done by a purely mechanical process. This particular record is a very good example of how good the results of that process could be.

    • @glenscentennialoldies
      @glenscentennialoldies Месяц назад

      Fun fact, I just posted Erna Sack singing the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" from 1937. When I first listened to it without knowing the date, I assumed it WAS an excellent acoustic as its frequency response was so limited. I normally wouldn't put such a "modern" recording on this channel, but she does have a beautiful voice. Its had the added bonus that the disc surface was relatively quiet and undistorted so it hadn't ever been played back on an acoustic player.

    • @glennriquito381
      @glennriquito381 Месяц назад

      @glenscentennialoldies I listened to it, and I see what you mean. Perhaps they used a cheap carbon microphone. Or maybe it was transcribed from a pre-electric recording? Either way, it was bad quality for that label. I've heard better sound reproduction from Reynolds Wrap, but the vocalist is good.

"Kitchener's Army...was an (initially) all-volunteer portion of the British Army formed in the United Kingdom from 1914 onwards following the outbreak of hostilities in the First World War in late July 1914. It originated on the recommendation of Herbert Kitchener, then the Secretary of State for War to obtain 500,000 volunteers for the Army. ... Contrary to the popular belief that the war would be over by Christmas 1914, Kitchener predicted a long and brutal war. He believed that arrival in Europe of an overwhelming force of new, well-trained and well-led divisions would prove a decisive blow against the Central Powers."

      I could only find a few people on RUclips playing it on the accordion or piano but no bands, so I asked ChatGPT (Chatty) and their response was- Yes, "The Jolly Coppersmith" (also known as "Der fröhliche Hammerschmied") by Carl Peters remains a favorite, especially among traditional concert and brass bands. While it may not be as prevalent as it once was, you’ll still hear it at parades, community events, and even as a part of some marching band performances, particularly those with an old-fashioned or festive theme. Its upbeat rhythm, playful melody, and familiar anvil sound effects give it a nostalgic charm that appeals to audiences and musicians alike. In concert settings, bands sometimes include "The Jolly Coppersmith" in medleys of classic marches or as a light-hearted interlude. It’s also enjoyed by audiences for its catchy tune and lively pace, which brings a sense of nostalgia and fun to performances.

    She's doing a Bert Williams imitation.

      @glenscentennialoldies 3 месяца назад

      Yes, I can see the similarity in the delivery, but of the several of her recordings I have heard, that seems to be her style too. I check DAHR and they don't have Williams down as performing it. P.S. I LOVE Bert Williams!

      @@glenscentennialoldies Jean Shepherd, the once famous NY radio host, used to play this song constantly, but it was the Billy Murray version. So I looked to see if anyone else had recorded it and found this one, which I also liked. It's easier to listen to because the recording is clearer.

    My favorite Ted Lewis song! Thanks a lot for posting a high quality of this record!!

      Ted Lewis is one of my absolute favorite performers from this time. So off-the-wall creative, he seems like he wouldn't have been as famous outside of a niche market as he was but he was second only to Paul Whiteman in popularity.
