This was very interesting…I was surprised to see the sizing being done by honing rather than being turned/machined on a lathe. Are valves ever sized this way or are they always honed?
Thanks for watching! We use the lathe for constructing and repairing valves, but we use the honing machine to size and fit the valve perfectly.

It just shows you how good Old’s Ambassadors were back then. As good as many pro horns from what I have read and been told. I have one from the 60s and it is built like a tank and still plays great!!
Some refer to F. E. Olds from the beginning through the Kanstul era as a "one tolerance shop." Ambys were just built heavier and less fancy. I love my little 1950 cornet.

Do you use regular 1200 grit lapping compound?
Hi, I use very fine lapping grit, because what I am looking for is to clean & polish without taking material off. 800 - 1200 grit would work well. Thanks for watching!
