What headsets do you guys use?

0:32 Easy to do when you're looking at all the other shots. Happened to me last Sunday. I'm talking to someone and the cam op moved away from the singer for some reason. However, having an unmanned camera on the lead singer isn't common so it shouldn't be an issue very often.

Good job. Best part was the communication. When training new people, I like hearing what they're thinking. Only thing I would work on would be switching shots on the beat of the song. I find counting by eight helps get a feel for it. Change shots on one.

27:43 Slow song = slow steady movement Not sure what camera setup you're using but can you use anything, stage, step, knee, etc, to stabilize the shot?

22:43 Be careful with taking similar shots back to back. Switch to 2 or 3 in between.

16:40 Was a little delayed switching shots for a little while. Press Cut on the drum beat. It gets easier the more you direct.

Good job Jesse. It takes time combining the key pressing with the shot calling. And making sure the shots are focused. And making sure you don't take two similar shots back to back. And switching shots with the beat. Good example is 18:25. Somehow everyone had a crowd shot and you got stuck not being able to take a different shot. It happens. Just gotta identify it early and tell the cam ops that you need keys, drums guitar, etc.

Another director having to look down at the keys which messes up the timing. left hand preview + right hand cut = no looking down. Time to switch methods

2:25 When you have 1 and 4 on the same shot and take 1, be sure to say "4 , move on" or "4, lead singer". That way they'll be ready for when you need them. Scanning the camera shots gets easier over time. Also, go to 2, 5 or any safe shot to keep the switching rhythm while you're waiting for 4 to set up. That way you're not lingering on a shot. Might not be perfect but at least you're still taking different shots.

Is that the JM I see doing camera in other videos? Needs to work a little on switching with the beat but I was impressed with how he quickly found another shot to go to instead of waiting on a camera to get focus. Easy to get tunnel vision on the Preview shot.

Just look at their eyes. They're having to look at their fingers when they're switching. With the left hand fingers on the Preview and the right hand finger on the Cut, you never have to look at the keys. Even Cam 6 can be pressed with your left thumb. And you don't have to worry about the wrong cam going live since you're not using the Program keys.

I still say using the Cut key would help the timing of all of the training directors. Like you said in an earlier video "you're previewing when you should be cutting"

One suggestion is to not say Ready every time. Just say the camera number and they'll know to get ready. Will make pressing keys easier since you're not saying so many words. Especially helpful on fast sections.

fyi: saying "# is live" is not a common practice. I'd highly recommend the ready/Go method. If you ever move forward in your career as a director, you won't have time to say "5 is live". A common way to hear it would be "ready 2, ready 3, go 2, ready 5, go 3, ready 5, go 5, ready 7, go 7, etc." you can cue multiple numbers at the same time that way as well.

Have you thought about getting a little movement on those wide shots on Cam 5 and 6

He'll be a great director. Good timing and communication. Learning the flow of the songs will make it easier.

Cam 3 swaying and shifting weight back and forth from each foot is a good idea. Makes it more emotional. Cam 1 does a good job at it on piano shots.

Why is he using the Preview key but not using the Cut key? I think left hand Previewing and right hand Cutting would be better. Don't have to worry about finding the right Program key to press since it's already ready to go. As you said, he's Previewing when he should be switching. Would have better timing by Cutting.

Do you have a list of your cameras and switcher anywhere?

Good job. I was a cam op for 14 years until I tried directing. Totally different experience. I was frustrated until I had enough practice. Just takes time. Directing is like being in the future. It's a weird feeling. You have no time to enjoy the moment because you have to prepare the next shot. I'd recommend working on your timing. Counting by fours or eights helps. Switch shots on the ones, usually when you hear the cymbal crash. I would recommend not saying so many words to the cam ops. It can mess up your timing. You have a good teacher.

Awesome directing. A lot going on. Suggestions: - I'd like to see the secondary singers. There's too many instrument shots. Cam 2 can switch between the singers. - 5 needs more head room or should be a tighter shot. Too much black. - 4 needs more lead room. I like to keep the mic in the middle of the shot.
