@@skeedtv Yes, I lived there for a year and a half bc my company's project was conducted there. Firstly, its hard to make friends unless you're fluent in Japanese. And even if you're fluent, you will also never truly get close to a Japanese person--- fit into the social culture as it has a conservative traditional backdrop to it that if you're not raised into it, its hard to grasp--- unless you let go majority of your identity to conform. Japanese people communicate very indirectly to save face/'look good' and to not be a burden or offend others--- this is part of the language to. Japanese language is very romantic, when they're talking directly to you they refer to you not as 'You' but another indirect term. This leads to alot of ghosting, but for those who get it - it just means giving the other person space and time. Secondly on this friendship thing, It's even hard for Japanese themselves to make friends. Its hard for foreigners who live in Japan to make friends with other foreigners bc everyone is trying to conform to Japanese society and make Japanese friends and have connections to succeed. You have to dress a certain way that fits with Japanese fashion/style. You can't speak out of turn whenever you want, its a high-context society, so you have to gain the skill to 'read the room' before saying anything thats considered 'rash' even though its not considered that in the West, making a brash decision that can ruin your relationship with your boss/colleagues, acquaintances. The work culture is intense and can be very toxic if you're not used to it. For example, there's an unsaid rule that you're expected to stay past 6 pm in the office just because management or your team is still there even though you've been there since 8/9 AM. Even my other foreign colleagues naturally abide by this rule. You're expected to go drinking at 9:30 pm/10 pm if the manages/directors and the team decides to and be at work the same time the next morning. (And by drinking, you don't have to literally drink if you're against alchohol, but just hang out with them at a bar) Everyone will kind of quietly distance themselves from you or shun you if you don't follow Japanese cultural work and social rules. It is already difficult for an average Japanese person to succeed in society, let alone a foreigner. Japanese people have the strongest passport in the world yet majority of them haven't even travelled outside of the country. But this is just my experience, Im sure alot of people enjoy working at their companies and immersing into the culture.
