Fourth Moon Camp
США
Добавлен 29 янв 2024
Fourth Moon Camp is an incredibly unique property neighboring Seneca Rocks, WV. The hippybilly misfits who live here are working on projects centered on building, infrastructure, design, art, and so much more. These projects are generally DIY and take place on 130 acres of mountain valley and steep hillsides.
Once in a blue moon, Fourth Moon Camp hosts an event called Fourth Moon Festival. This is one of the most unique and storybook events you can possibly imagine, and many of our projects center on preparations for this unusual festival.
Fourth Moon Camp has the ultimate goal of becoming a privately trusted land conservancy centered on outdoor recreation, wildlife and nature, and education. If you or anyone you know may be interested in helping the cause, send us a message!
We look forward to showing you our progress over the years!

November 2024 BLIZZARD at White Grass Ski Touring Center in Canaan Valley, West Virginia
As Chip might say, Ullr has blessed us. When it snows, you go skiing... when it REALLY snows, you go to White Grass. We hope this November blizzard is a sign of things to come this winter!
Fourth Moon Camp is a fledgling nature conservancy using DIY and permaculture models. There's a handful of us that live on/near the land, and we work with a variety of outdoor user groups and land conservation agencies to accomplish our goals. We are renting out some private campsites and camping yurts to help pay for some of our projects.

Driving up Roy Gap Road at Seneca Rocks, WV

One of the most common questions we get from our campers is, "what is the drive up Roy Gap Road like?" Roy Gap Road is a state-maintained, gravel road; providing access to Rock Climbing trails, where climbers can be evacuated by vehicle. There is no parking along Roy Gap Road, and beyond Roy Gap, the public forest becomes private property. There is no public turn around on Roy Gap Road, so it i...

Really nice. New to your channel

@@JayCWhiteCloud definitely a great season! Hope to see you soon!
Hi love from India 🇮🇳
The only way to go is to put your eyelits on the back side of the tree and wrapping your rope around the tree so your not putting the weight on the threads of the anchors
@@davidhaynes3202 there's advantages either way, for sure. I've been in twenty year old nets that were built both ways, and they age differently and require different upkeep. Heck, I've visited nets that are straight through bolted multiple times in the tree and honestly, those seem to hold up the best.
I think it can't be dead wood for it.
you're 100% right. You're supposed to select healthy hardwood and cut it off sometime in the fall. We didn't learn that until after this video, but funny enough, we've had oyster and chicken growing this fall! It's highly doubtful it's from our efforts, since it's been such a short amount of time, but we'll take it as a sign to keep the efforts up!
Beautiful scenery
A fantastic entrance way to a special camp.
Pretty cool but looks like a bunch of random crap tossed into a tree.
yep! We couldn't really afford to buy everything for the purpose, so most things are repurposed random crap, now in a tree. Might need to update the title.
you should check out treenet collective's work. Their stuff is top notch coordination.
How many watts is your plug? 1300w can it power a coffee pot? Please say yes ☕️
I'm so sorry, we're only at 1000w in the yurts. But the yurts are now paired with a converted luxury school bus that has full power! It's called the HippyBilly Hangout, in which the bus is your kitchen, living room, bathroom, etc. And the yurts serve as bedrooms!
I Wont to do something like that in my land, but i here from you that the materials get deteriorate in some years, so can i ask you what you do when this happens? Simply abbandoned everything, continue to add ropes on ropes for keeping all tied and strong every time is nedeed, or remoove everything and redo again every some years?, anyway thanks for your videos your work is really ispiring
the most common method is cutting away the old parts that no longer work, and filling in the gaps with newer material. We primarily use old ropes/cordage to begin with, so we are usually looking to give ropes a second life before they are truly retired.
You could put tarps up for shade and to keep rain off you then its like a fabric tree house
great idea!
This seems like so much fun!
truly. a life changing way to use old rope.
You said you chose brass eye bolts for asthetics. But since its so much about saftey and the longevity of your tree nets. I just wantes you to be aware that copper and brass will kill trees. Stainless is a good way to go because its safe for the tree and generally wont be eatin away by the tree like raw steel. We had a neighbor that didnt like our trees and his view. So he drove copper and brass nails in a few places around the trunks of the trees and within a year we noticed them dying. By the second year they were dead. I know you just chose a limb which is better than a trunk, but it will ultimately work like cancer into the tree and kill the whole tree. Ya may wanna do your own research because maybe not all trees react the same way. Also I do concrete snd the old timers used to tell me they would toss old copper pennys just inside the perimeter of the concrete forms before pouring concrete. It kept nearby trees from growing under the sidewalk with the roots and pushing the sidewalk up. As well as weeds from growing to. Cool stuff ya got going, be safe😊
thanks for the heads up, looks like we gotta get those out of there and replace them with stainless!
What a great project, nice to know your channel. I am vietnames
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the updates we add in over time.
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
I live in Virginia on the border of west Virginia. I was going to make my first full sized tree net "tree house" any recommendations on how to find others who enjoy the hobby around us?
Slackliners are certainly the most active treenet builders right now. So linking into slackline groups/meetups is a sure way to meet similar thinkers. I know reddit has a treenet subreddit too, that is a fun place to bounce ideas off others remotely. There's also a new-ish company called Treenet Collective, that works to increase treenet info accessibility. You can certainly visit us and Moonshine too! We offer day tours and overnight camping in the net; allowing you a ton of time to see up close how it has been built (and evolved)!
@FourthMoonCamp thank you for the information, that sounds amazing! I can't wait to see more.

Camping here has gone straight onto my bucket list
Can't wait for you to visit!
what type of rope you use?
all sorts. exclusively static rope for structural and infrastructural components; 5mm to 14mm for those parts. Then paracord and other small cordage for comfort and substructure. Also flat webbing for woven flooring and dynamic climbing rope for walls and artsy installations. There's even 1.25" 12-strand amsteel in there; MBS 110,000lbs. We'll use anything we can, if it's robust enough to last a few years before we have to fix it up.
Hey guys, what was the reason for creating this net out of Vectran? It must be unbelievably strong.
This was originally spliced by two slackliners for their cargo van that they were living in. They used it for all of their bedding, pillows, blankets, etc... above their bed in the van. They made it strong enough that when they were on the road, they could take it out of their van and use it as a spacenet on the go, even being used for highline spacenets potentially. When they moved out of the van, the net was retired here as an artistic installation. It is 44 rows by 44 columns, meaning it has at least 2000 splices. But actually much more because of how it ended up being built and reinforcement of the perimeter.
@@FourthMoonCamp Love it, have you looked up how strong Vectran is? This might be slight overkill for some bedding. 😂
@@WildGooseChase oh for sure, it's way overkill. Wade has a bit of an irrational love for vectran, haha.
@@FourthMoonCamp I totally get it!

RUclips algorithm is a "strange beast." I woke up this morning, made tea and this is the first thing that pops up instead of news...Seeing the notch where the "Gendarme" once stood that I had climbed so often made me a wee bit sad; yet also nostalgic, if only by video. I was blessed to spend many decades climbing, hiking, and later guiding that special blade of rock in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The views from Roy Gap are some of the richest in my memory going back to the 70s when I got to see my first Eastern cougar there in the Dolly Sods, though West Virginia’s DEP still won’t recognize their presence (LOL!!!) regardless of who is seeing it professional or otherwise…Thanks for a great memory visit and the start of the week…

Definitely want to build one of these now
Couldn't recommend the process more. It's never done, but always a creation none the less.
How much have you spent on Mooshine?
dang, honestly never actually thought about that... There's at least 300 stainless eye bolts; at $4 each, that's a conservative $1k in the main anchoring system. I don't even know how to estimate the rope and cordage at this point. There's no less than a dozen old 60m climbing ropes, another dozen or so of 70m retired ropes. Something like 300m of the 5/8" HTP perimeter rope, another 2000m or so, of static ropes btw 8mm and 11mm. Another 500m of old accessory cord maybe? Then there's something like 10-15, 1km spools of paracord, plus another 20-ish 100-yard spools of paracord. I'd guess something like 500m of decorative ropes for random things. Maybe another 1km of retired slackline/highline webbing... definitely lost count on those retired rigs. Then there's all sorts of other stuff, likes the swings, lyra, silks, etc. and all the hardware and equipment to permarig it. Slings, carabiners, hammocks, shelves, blah blah blah. Plus, this video doesn't even have any of the highlines rigged yet. Part three will be a yet fuller tour, with the highlines rigged off of the net. Those highline setups are like $4k, but rigged in a wayyyyy overdone way because of being a permarig. Even the tapes are deluxe. All that's to say, that's not even everything. Like the silly ripstik or custom made signage. If I had to guess, we're around maybe $40k in materials? I'd prefer to not think about how much my time would cost in labor hours 😂
@@FourthMoonCampyou and your tree are an inspiration! I hope to have land and trees one day to build my own. Thank you for the price breakdown, and I think your methods will be the ones I use
