Lionel Classics 381E State Set running under the tree.
The Transcontinental Limited: This had been my father's State Set. He had wanted one since he was a small child when the original ones were new. Around 1992, he got this Lionel Classics set (made for Lionel by MTH). Whereas the originals reportedly had great difficulty pulling all four cars, this one has no problem doing so (and would probably pull at least one more), even without the additional lead weights that came with it. I have serviced the locomotive, but it still needs a good cosmetic cleaning as well as needing the front coupler to be straightened. I don't think it has been run since he passed away almost 20 years ago. It is very nice to see it running again.

Two MTH PS3 Upgrades...MTH PS1 Allegheny and MTH PRR USRA 2-8-8-2 (basic sound)
Просмотров 3512 месяца назад
On the layout are my first two PS3 upgrades. The USRA 2-8-8-2 is the second one I have attempted. Like the first (the Allegheny) it went very smoothly. Both are running on restored 1960 Super O Layout under DCS. On the inside loop is a Lionel MPC Wabash passenger set, running in conventional from one of the DCS variable channels.

I have had this locomotive for years, but seldom ran it as the PS-1 Steam Sounds (especially the chuff) left a great deal to be desired. I finally bit the bullet and installed the PS-3 Upgrade over about four days (I worked very slowly and carefully, only a few hours per day). I studied videos her on RUclips by NaxSchak, Nix Crossing, and Chris's Trains and More before and during the conversion...
Lionel 380 pulling a set of 418 series passenger cars around the T.T.O.S. SWD layout earlier today.

The 380 was acquired over 20 years ago. It is the only locomotive I own with a large gear Super Motor. It pulls the 418 series passenger cars effortlessly. Thank you to Eric Nissan for allowing me to run my trains on his layout!
Repaired Lionel 402 from the 1920's running for the first time in 20 years.

Lionel 402 (repaint) running for the first time in 20 years on T.T.O.S. SWD Layout today. I had to replace a shorted armature in one of the two Super Motors. I had forgotten how quiet this locomotive is and how smoothly it runs. On the outer loop is Steve Eastman's magnificent Chicago and Northwester 400E passenger set. I think the blue Steeple Cab locomotive is from "The Trainmakers."

I am not sure if this Wabash passenger set is technically MPC or Lionel Corp. It was in beautiful condition when I acquired it with the exception of the plastic inserts that retain the wheel sets being loose. It was very easy to repair and get running again. The MTH 0-8-0 was also recently repaired-the smoke unit motor and wick were replaced, as were the speaker and battery.

OK. We must be related! You're running on Super-O AND you have a "Martian Flying Machine"!
fun
An Allegheny will beat a "Big Boy" any day...
Don't mess with an Allegheny...
Thank you for the display and the story. I'm sure your father would be glad to see it running again.
I really like the incandescent lights of those older models which makes an overall warmer hue
Nice to see another video from you and your layout! One of my favorite Super O layouts on youtube! Merry Christmas!
Thank you very much and Merry Christmas to you as well!
Nice! I like the “War Of The Worlds” space ship over your layout!😎
Those pesky Martians! They all look like Ray Walston too!
You gotta show the car before you drive it !
Love the layout.
Looking and running great.
Thank you!
Sounds bad.
Super O is AMAZING! The fact that it was on restored 1960 track (when I was born) WOW!
Vary cool. Like a magical tour. Thank you.
"I love the smell of (coal smoke) in the morning"...
Looks like a keeper.
Real nice, a great smoker. Always like seeing upgrades to PS3.
what is your radio setup? just a speaker, or did you wire the radio in the car (if you have one) to be able to connect to your phone, etc? did that with a countertop radio from the 50's, so it's definitively possible
I have my phone connected to a battery powered AM transmitter. The transmitter ground is tied to the original Ford radio case. The transmitter antenna comes up through the dash near the windshield wiper control and is coiled around the base of the stock antenna.
@@RAK402 nice, thanks!
Wish I had the nerve to try a PS3 upgrade.
Cool run session. Awesome consists and layout.
fun vid
Hey Ah-Clem! Very cool, lots of trains in small area, was looking at N-gauge, might build a layout.
I think that would be cool! You did that back in the mid to late 1970's I think. The technology has changed a huge amount since then. Yippee Ty One On!
@@RAK402 So then is Kato the best “N” gauge stuff now? One reason I stopped the trains was the Bachman stuff was garbage. Even the Athen stuff would constantly derail if the track wasn’t set perfect. I noticed the Kato track is mounted to a ridged road bed. This looks like it might work better, do you know anything about this? I know it’s not your gauge but let me know if you do. Thanks!
@@mjhouse1955 EK-trician, I don't know much of anything about N-Gauge. The Kato track looks really good to me too. O-Gauge and even Standard Gauge has now gone to the track with integral plastic roadbed (I think Kato was the first to do it) and it works really well. DCC is very interesting (sound, command control that will fit in HO or N Gauge.
I was just going to ask are you running dcs but it appears so! Are the 2 loops insulated from each other each other?
There are two loops on the layout that are not connected to each other. Both loops are on DCS variable channels. Both also have TMCC/Legacy. The catenary is powered directly from the transformer with no Command Control or DCS Variable Control (at the moment-I will probably add a second TIU so that I can control the voltage to the catenary through a Variable Channel). Both of the locomotives that have been upgraded to PS-3 are running on the same outside loop in Command Mode (DCS). The passenger train on the inner loop is not equipped with command and is running from the Variable DCS channel.
@RAK402 thank you for the explanation! I am watching a video by Sean's train room on his standard of the world series episode 8 about wiring, it kind of explains how he does it using switches to change the power going from the TIU to the track with a double throw switch. I always used 4 outputs on my transformer for 4 different loops with 2 being conventional and 2 DCS controlled. I will do my new layout differently now from watching the video and your explanation. Thanks, Glenn
@@azslotracer I attempted to post a reply before but it seems to be gone sir. There is no reason to go to the complexity of double-pole double-throw switches. You were right the first time in using one DCS channel per loop-DCS stays on all the time and conventional running is accomplished through the variable channels. If you need more variable channels you add another TIU and run them in "Super TIU" mode (the new WTIU looks to be equipped with four variable channels so you would only need one of those). When I turn the power on, DCS is on, on both tracks. The only thing that I have on a separate switch is the Legacy Command base as some of those had an issue with overcharging the remote batteries. If you want to run pure conventional (i.e. varying the voltage through the transformer) that works too with DCS on the tracks. My layout is powered by two post-war ZW's and sometimes I just sit there, like I did 60+ years ago and run in conventional using the ZW handles.
@@RAK402 did you add any protective circuit breakers to protect the protosounds 2/3 engines against any shorts?
@@azslotracer No, there are fuses in the TIU to take care of this.
I love JR but this could be MUCH simpler and more direct... just flipping the key and choosing the active positions, like Spektrum programming for example....
The engineers of the day knew what they were doing. You just can't treat older cars as the jump-in-and-go appliances we've become accustomed to.
That so cool
Awesome job!!! Looks and sounds fantastic!!! 💯😎
Love super o had those as kids
Thank you! This is my childhood layout, built by my father in 1960, restored.
Was this filmed in California?
Yes sir!
Cool consists, nice run.
Thank you!
Awesome 0-8-0!
Great layout, trains and filming.
Thank you!
What brand of track is that?
It is Lionel Super O track from the late 1950's/early 1960's. I have been using it for 64 years now.
@RAK402 I had a feeling it was super O, I just bought a small train table that used super O and I'm working on restoring it with super O. Yours looks excellent by the way
@@safeguardprime5914 Thank you very much. You will, if you haven't already, hear people saying that the center rail of Super O will damage your pickup rollers. This is an old wives tale. Arcing is what damages pickup rollers no matter what type of track you use. Keep the center rail clean and you will be fine! Good luck with you layout-enjoy!
@RAK402 Oh, I've never heard of that. Oh yeah, track health is extremely important I will definitely keep that in mind!
@@RAK402 are there any preferred tools to clean a super O center rail?
Very cool. Crazy how much louder the starter is.
Thanks, I really enjoyed that nostalgic video. Cheers.
Thanks for this, Richard
How cool is THAT!!!!!!!!

Beautiful Rio Grande and Marx Allstate looks like a strong runner.
Very nice trains and lots of detail on layout.
Thank you!

Thank you very much sir!
Loved watching this and hearing the music in the background. It sounds so nice. Would love to see an updated showing the outside the car as well as more driving. Love these old cars!
Thank you very much! At some point, I will re-shoot the video, now that the car has been restored. I will get shots of the outside as well. Thank you again!
@RAK402 Cool, looking forward to it!
You have some amazing Rio Grande locomotives. Your Marx consist is absolutely amazing!
Your overhead catenary system looks amazing! Is that made by MTH? Frank
Yes-MTH.
Love that shot at 0:40 seconds! What a beautiful layout. What size is your layout? What radius is your curves 031?👍😎
Thank you! The layout is all Super O Track. Some of it has the original 036, some is 042, some is 048, and the outside loop is 054. The track was modified by Rich Riley.
You have a very nice super O layout. 👍😎 Frank
Thank you!
Wowie that is a sizeable layout!
