    why would you put the effects after the fader?

    • @musicalthingsTD
      @musicalthingsTD 29 дней назад

      Really depends on effect and how I'm dealing with the track in the mix. Compression I usually go pre fader, most of the time I'm compressing on the way in then I'll usually go post fader with EQ another compressor if needed. Pre fader allows me to have some control of effects if I'm going to do parallel processing of that track. EG.. I have a send to a reverb for the track and I don't want the EQ or other effects I have on inserts of the track to be sent to the reverb effects send, I would go pre fader pre effects and that would only send the clean channel to the send reverb. About 90% of the time any reverb I use has an EQ after it. If I'm post fader all inserts on channel and any sends I have for that channel will have everything on that channel being sent. On a vocal track I might want to use a reverb post fader on the insert of the track to use early reflections to bring vocals forward but I would want that early reflection reverb going to my reverb send so it keeps it's place in the mix. Hope that helps.

Lots of folks didn't believe it sounded different but that's been proven wrong. If I want to get a quick mix I'll throw it in Mixbus 10 have everything staged, level balanced, compressed and eq'ed in 10 to 15 minutes, giving me way more time to be creative with my mixing and 3D sound scaping of the story. Did you configure SSL 360 (v1.7.8.57962) in a certain way that allows you to scroll with the channel select rotary (fader select mode) to select the Mixbus channels as you do in the video @ 3:40? I'm on a Windows 10 machine (meets all system requirements) with current firmware for the UF1 and UF8. I can scroll through the mixer channels no problem, but it won't scroll to the first Mixbus channel from the last mixer channel (audio or midi). I have the UF1 and UF8 on layer 1 and set up correctly (auto select is ticked for the UF1 in 360) and in Harrison Mixbus 10 Pro preferences with the correct midi ports associated with layer 1 (SSL V-MIDI Port 1 source/ destination). I get the same behavior when just configured for the UF1 in 360 and the UF8 disconnected.

    • @musicalthingsTD
      @musicalthingsTD Месяц назад

      No mapping at all when I scroll to end of channels it scrolls into the Mixbus's. In 360 control app for the UF1 and UF8 on left side the control setup tab (the little gear) should be Mixbus in both Plugin Mixer and Midi CC transport selection tabs, make sure in the UF1 tab you have correct layer selected which for you is Layer 1 and Mixbus is selected, down at Advanced Transport, make sure This Layer is Transport Master is checked. Up in Layer 1 tab you will see in green TRANSPORT MASTER . Everything should work from there other than that only idea would be Windows version, I work in Win 11.

    Mixbus is a fantastic DAW. I also use Nuendo 13, Studio One 5, Samplitude Pro X 5, Reason and Abelton Live 12. I have spend most of my time in Mixbus. Not just mixing, but doing entire projects. Some people have complained about doing this in Mixbus but I have had no problems doing so. I have had incidents where I've stared in Studio One or Nuendo because I've wanted to use ARA 2 with Melodyne or Revoice Pro as Mixbus does not yet utilize ARA 2 but I'm sure that's coming as well. Mixbus 10 Pro is a fantastic product. Keep it going, Harrison.

    • @musicalthingsTD
      @musicalthingsTD 3 месяца назад

      Great question. I've been told in their forum it was something Harrison is working on for all their supported OS . If using macOS you can create an Aggregate device and rename I/O labels. The labels appear in Mixbus. Some folks use Jack in macOS to rename I/O's. I haven't found an OS based solution in WIN. I use a lot of RME gear and Total Mix FX allows renaming all i/o's but it doesn't show in MixBus as the naming scheme I use. I have submitted a support request to Harrison about this when they answer I'll post it with a reply here. If I find a way I will do a video on it.

    I am on Mixbus10pro and drum routing is as it used to be. Just put the mics through the channels, send to audiobuses and then mixbuses. But other than the title suggest you ainttalking about drums, but about midi one's and zero's, wannabe-instruments lol.

    • @musicalthingsTD
      @musicalthingsTD 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment. In the video I state it's for midi drums. The PM's I received were for midi drum routing issues in MixBus 10. The individuals that were having issues have no problems routing real drums from each mic input and assigning those inputs to the correlating audio track in any DAW. Yes midi drums are wanna be drums just 1's and zero's. They are tools to be used as needed. Sometimes a bass or guitar player or even a vocalist wont use a click track either through inexperience or preference to hearing a drum beat. If the drums aren't tracked during their session use what you have to make them as comfortable as possible and get the best performance out of the musicians your working with. Some folks use midi drums to learn to mix real drums others don't have access to real drums. Some will use the routing already created by the midi drums to track real drums and save time and effort since the tracks are already in the session. Different strokes for different folks.

      Make sure to get your perpetual Pro Tools DL. If you bought it recently, Avid was bundling a perpetual license with it now, instead of the subscription, don't know how long that's going on. The MBOX has really changed my work flow in small projects everything works all the time. No drivers, no usb or thunderbolt issues a true plug -n- play product. The pre's are really good. Lot of variables there! If your using a mac the x8 works great, if on a PC not so much even if you have thunderbolt on the PC the drivers don't work well, when you turn on the Apollo x8, 9 out of 10 times it requires a restart of the PC. This drove me crazy and was why I went to RME Fireface UFXII for the professional studio environment where I'm tracking many different things and my clients pay the bills. The x8 does have some of the best converters made. It has DSP and on older computers was needed, but in todays world with the computers we run DSP means nothing. I would wait until after winter NAMM see what UA comes out with before spending the money if nothing changes and your in a professional environment go look at RME interfaces after hundreds of sessions not once has the UFXII failed or not worked and it has drivers but RME drivers can't be beat by any other company there is. Now if your in a small studio or a home environment I would either go with the MBOX or maybe the RME UCXII The MBOX does not use drivers and will work every time no matter what type computer or DAW you are using. Can I hear the differences in converters in any of these interfaces not 1 bit neither can anyone else. Only when doing true measuring tests will there be any evidence of a difference and those are so small it really doesn't matter but in the real world nobody can tell nor do they care. Most music is being listened to on ear buds a phone or in the car. I've listened to all of these interfaces on ATMOS systems and couldn't tell what interface was used. Of course I'm not a fan of ATMOS unless it's in a cinematic environment then it makes sense but in music it's a waste of resources and money. For the money and bang for buck and for a small or home studio the MBOX beats everything has a few Carbon Pre's you can go 8 inputs 4 of which has 48v phantom power has digital ADAT in and out and the converters sound great 2 headphone outputs NO drivers to mess with or cause any issues and has never failed or glitched on any DAW or computer I use with over 100 sessions and a little over a year now. I've tracked full bands done a few orchestral sessions with the MBOX of course I used ADAT from my RME 12 pre for the extra needed pre's but there was never a problem and never has mastering mentioned anything about converters being used or quality of the sessions from the MBOX. All in all the MBOX is one of the best studio investments I've ever made. This has been my experience hope it helps.@@freeasabird6799

      I would map the tempo then time warp the tempo to match the music, this method wont hurt the music since your time warping the tempo and not manipulating the music in any way. Basically your making the tempo match the music instead of trying to quantize the music. Time warping tempo is the method all pro studio's use for tempo issues it's been around for years. Dom Sigalas has an excellent video on this method and he does a great job at showing you how to do it. Here is the link to that You Tube video. ruclips.net/video/c5AZ8fecXLw/видео.html I wouldn't add anything until the tempo issues are resolved. All drum programs use midi to generate the drum notes and it will follow the tempo. As far as adding percussion to the music there are several ways to do it. I sometimes use my keyboards. You can use your computer keyboard if you want. I add an instrument track and choose the drum samples that sounds best for the song. If the drum parts are complex, I will do one instrument at a time. You can add an instrument track with the drum program you choose and drag N drop whole grooves on the new track the new drums will follow the tempo. Then open that midi track in your editor and move, add or subtract what you want. If I just want to enhance drums I will usually use Steven Slate's Trigger 2 plugin that is the fastest way and he has some great sounding drums that can be tuned to the original drums. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment I really appreciate them.

      I'm glad I could help. Dom has some really good videos on Cubase. I was going to do a video on the time warping method but Dom beat me to it. I've been using that method for quite a few years I learned from producer Michael White but he only uses Pro Tools it's much easier in Cubase especially Cubase 13.

      If your computer does not have USB-C just use the adapter, I've tried it in USB-A and USB-A 3.0 - 3.1 they all worked, the standard USB-A is a little slower in transfer speeds so USB-A 3.0 - 3.1 is preferred but it will work with standard. USB-A 3.0 and 3.1 will usually be blue, standard is usually white. Look at the USB-A slot sometimes hard to see shine a light at it you will be able to see if its standard (white) or 3.0 - 3.1 (blue).

    Hey, thanks for your solid, and detailed video, Man. I'm a long time Motu 2408 Mk3 user and I'm contemplating upgrading to : RME, or this MBox Studio.

    • @musicalthingsTD
      @musicalthingsTD 8 месяцев назад

      I've used RME the longest when I'm doing larger projects I usually went for my RME Fireface UFX II along with a 12 mic D. But lately, I ADAT the 12 mic D into the MBOX without any issues. A few years ago RME converters were some of the best around and I had no issues what so ever with their drivers, today things have changed even cheap interfaces sound really good. The MBOX doesn't use drivers and has the carbon pre's in it. I lose some pre's using the MBOX that's when the 12 mic D comes in, but majority of time I'm using maybe 4 condenser mics at one time the rest are dynamic's no need for 48v phantom power so I use inputs 5 and 6 on the MBOX for the dynamic mics if more are needed ADAT the 12 mic D all is good. I've tracked drums with 6 mics using just the MBOX. The tracks went to post no complaints and they were used for the project. Of course the room and mics used along with placement play the biggest role. In today's world I would save the 1,600$ extra for UFX II or the extra 800$ for the UCX II than what the MBOX sells for, put the saved funds to mics and maybe plugins. RME make some of the best recording equipment out there but the need for that has diminished to the point the cost isn't justified unless it's for a large production studio. We can do almost anything in our small studios and much less expensive equipment and sound just as good as anything being produced. Most stuff is listened to on our phones and ear buds maybe on car stereo nobody can tell what the music is recorded with, nor do they care. If it sounds good, it is good! That's my opinion after using RME for well over 5 years and my experience with the MBOX for almost a year now. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for the comment they are appreciated very much.

      Thanks ever so much, Todd for your interesting and informative reply. I do apprecilike and respect your opinion. I had heard that what little I know of the converters in the Xbox are the same as their carbon interfaces. Mmmmm, I wonder. Big big attraction of course. Either way, you keep up the good works telling it as it is. Again, thanks, Man. @@musicalthingsTD

Good to see SSL are working with Harrison instead of having them disappear. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate them immensely.

    Thanks for the video, but where is the noise? Apart from the fan or the computer-type device... I was convinced by the product. I would go so far as to say that the original Ampex 351 has more residual noise. I'll compare them in that regard. Sound-wise, the 351 has a little more character, but the price difference doesn't always justify the difference in sound. Maybe the Warm Audio is more practical for everyday use for me. On the other hand, in my case, I am a drummer and I try to bring my instruments and microphones (md-441oh and 60's D12 bd) to the gigs. These microphones need decent preamps to get the best out of them, and nowadays with everything digital, neutral and aseptic... it's crap. In addition, when you put a certain amount of gain on those preamps, noises (really extreme noises that cannot be worked with) come out, often due to poorly done electrical assembly. My plan is to have the two channel model Wa-2mpx with a voltage stabilizer in a rack. Of course I'm not going to go around with two 351s and Wa have a good solution. Again, thanks for the information.

    • @musicalthingsTD
      @musicalthingsTD 8 месяцев назад

      There really is no noise from the WA-MPX unless you use a ribbon mic but some folks swear they hear noise, in this video I got no discernable noise at all, it surprised me. On the first video I did, there was a bad cord, didn't realize until I tried to use that cord for another project and it was intermittent so I tossed it. If your gonna use it the way your intending I don't think even if you use the high gain switch you would have much noise at all. I've used the WA-MPX with the md-441U on toms and got no noise at all. The drummer in the session went and bought himself 2 of the dual channel WA-MPX's he thinks their the best sounding Pre's he's ever used and has them in his rack for live shows. He say's the only time he got too much noise from them are when he was at a club and didn't have them plugged into his power conditioner, but clubs and venues are notorious for having lousy power with tons of interference. He went back to that same venue a couple of weeks later with a Furman PL-Plus DMC powering his rack and say's there was no noise at all, even when he cranked the gain with the high gain switch engaged. He also thinks the Tape saturation switch on the WA-MPX is the bomb, states he never turns it off. For the price of the WA-MPX and the build quality I don't think you can beat it. Warm Audio did a really good job with it. Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it. Have fun with the WA-MPX. Have a good one.

      I appreciate the comment, I wanted so much to keep my Apollo Twin but had issues on the PC's when using thunderbolt connection dang drivers constantly not recognizing or having to reinstall them, I'm sure it's a Windows issue but cant have that happening when musicians are ready to go. Avid did a great job with the Mbox Studio no drivers needed just firmware update when you first plug it up, it has been running flawless on Mac and PC's in every DAW used, probably the best small studio interface I've ever worked with, i'ts not that small actually! Recently did a large tracking project and used the Mbox for everything, a Brass section Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone a String section with Cello, Violins, Guitars Harps, Piano, upright Bass, Drums, Vocals. I used the ADAT in from an RME 12 D mic preamp when we needed more pre's and not 1 hiccup it worked great. Getting close to a full year with the Mbox now and it's never failed or had any issues and 80% of all that use has been on PC's Windows 11. Only RME has had that kind of stability on Windows for me. Hope you enjoy your Mbox Studio if your a guitarist you'll LOVE it. If you use any ribbon mics try out the Hi-Z to give different character to the mic that simple feature made a huge difference on my last session. Thank you. Have fun.

      @@musicalthingsTD Thanks for the vote of confidence! My MBOX Studio is on its way from Vintage King Audio in Burbank as we speak! Got it at " Demo Deal" price for a steal at $649. I cant wait to dig into it after sweating about buying another UAD product. Hardware so expensive without all of the features I actually need as a producer and performer. Now they are moving to "Native" plugins and blowing them out similar to Waves. Giving away LA2A for free (which is what I use most from their ecosystem). I absolutely hated Pro Tools and Digidesign/AVID after not getting support in the form of updated MBOX Pro drivers in the past, the switch to Pro Tools subscription only models, etc. But I am back to the MBOX will be using it with Logic and Ableton Live primarily, will get with Pro Tools if any Post audio gigs com in as we know, PT is indispensable for film work. The hardware has always been great with the exception of updates etc. So still a little skeptical but at this price point, I cant resist, the features of this new MBOX blows everything else clear out of the water. Seems like they have some new "young blood" in the development dept. With Bluetooth and iOS compliance, the future is finally here.

    Thanks for the info. I wish they also made a smaller, much cheaper version like the former AVID M Box but with the same preamps and converters as in the M Box Studio. My AVID M Box still works fine on Windows 7 and also on Windows 11 in Protools version 9.0.6 but my recordings consist of only two tracks. But Protools version 9.0.6 is not compatible with Windows 10. Although not at all an advanced user I like the setup of the Protools DAW, it's intuitive and user friendly, it's all before your very eyes.

      Thanks for the comment, When I purchased the Mbox Studio was thinking it was a little spendy but I've been using RME interfaces and anything from RME will cost a pretty penny so for over a hundred dollars cheaper than my Baby Face Pro FS which is a great portable interface, I was thinking if it does what they claimed the pricing on the Mbox Studio wasn't too bad. Plus I got a free year of Pro Tools Studio with the Mbox purchase, don't know if they are still doing the Pro Tools deal or not but that saved me from having to renew my subscription for Pro Tools. Now that Avid has reinstated perpetual licensing when my free year is up I'll go to that. On a side note the Mbox has held it's own against the RME stuff and am very pleased with it.

      Yes it is a very good Interface, I've been using it pretty much full time. My main interface is an RME UFX II and now only reason to use the RME is if I'm tracking a whole band or orchestral tracking where I'd need 16 or more tracks at one time. I have a tracking session with a full band later next week and I'm going to use the Mbox ADAT into my RME 12-D mic pre's and see how it goes. I'm sure there will be no issues. If I come across any I'll post them. Thanks for the comments Really glad your liking the Mbox Studio.

      I had the Apollo twin for about 7 months it was a nice interface. Unfortunately the Apollo twin and my Windows pc's never played well together, not with thunderbolt or usb-c. I hear now they have gotten much better. The Mbox Studio has never had any issues. Plugged it in updated firmware, and almost a year now, not 1 hiccup. The Mbox for my situation is the better interface, but I like to re-amp and have quite a bit of outboard hardware, preamps, compressors, EQ's even guitar pedals it was easier to intigrate the hardware on Mbox due to the dedicated FX send/ returns. I hope this helps and doesn't make the decision-making any harder. Thank you for the comments.
