@@accentactor I wonder what Stalin's Georgian accent sounded like in Russian--and if Stalin spoke English, what that would have sounded like. Would the English have been a "real English accent?" Most of the English-speaking Germans I met have an American mid-western accent overlaid on their German-accented English. I used to be able to tell Berliner from Bavaria and was familiar with the Rhineland accent when conversing in German, but that has been 35 years ago.

Thank you for your thought-provoking comment, @Swedishfinnpolymath! This is exactly the dialogue I was hoping to invoke. I agree that both Manifest Destiny and Lebensraum involve ideas of expansion. Manifest Destiny was largely driven by a belief in spreading democracy and civilization, which resulted in significant suffering for indigenous populations. In contrast, Lebensraum was rooted in a horrific racial ideology that justified genocide and systemic oppression. It's crucial for America to reflect on its past and not allow nationalism and expansionism for economic gain to cloud its moral judgment. Let us hope that Germany, America, or any other emerging world power learns from history and does not repeat the atrocities associated with Lebensraum, which are tied to a totalitarian regime and aggressive imperialism.

Your proposed solutions-like ending support for certain governments, making essentials affordable, and addressing homelessness and student debt-are certainly worth considering. I often wonder how cutting off funds to other countries would influence our international relations; it would be fascinating to be a fly on the wall during those negotiations. I also have concerns that implementing large-scale affordability programs for groceries, gas, and housing might necessitate sizable tax increases and could interfere with the natural flow of the economic cycle. Sometimes, enduring periods of hardship might be necessary for long-term stability, even if it challenges the standard of living we've grown accustomed to. I often think about how beneficial it could be if more citizens embraced self-sustainable lifestyles, producing their own food and building their own homes through permaculture practices. Of course, I understand that this is easier said than done when trying to provide for a family. Regarding canceling student debt, this would require careful consideration of equity. What would be the repercussions for borrowers who have already paid off their debt? It is somewhat similar to the border issue. It seems easier to enter this country illegally rather than taking all the steps to do it legally. Prisons and homelessness indeed require substantial funding and LONG-term commitment from local and federal governments. Excellent point, @nt3886 - How much have overshadowed historical injustices impacted the shape of our world? Leopold’s exploitation of the Congo and the British Empire's impact on India are two prime examples of colonial violence and oppression that deserve more recognition. The pop media's selective memory of historical narratives is concerning. I wish we had more constructive discussions about past moral accountability to give us a broader perspective on all forms of oppression and violence today, regardless of the nationality of the perpetrators.
