REHAB 2025! - 56 Year Old Goes Solo Car Camping and Hiking in Mid Wales! Part Two #carcamping
The second and final part of my January 2025 rehabilitation trip to the Fforest Fields campsite in mid Wales. This time, I hit the hills for a couple of days and soak up the wonderful scenery on offer in the area. I did over ten hours hiking over two days and could feel the rejuvenation of mind and body occurring with each and every footstep!
In case anyone was wondering, although I probably could, I claim nothing at all from the benefit system - I worked very hard from the age of 15, saved, invested wisely, paid into a private pension from 1992 and have, on occasion, paid up to 40% income tax. Now, by living a simple and frugal lifestyle, I'm able to live a somewhat semi-retired life on a...

Set-up Update and Going Cold Turkey! Wales - Part One
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.14 дней назад
Returning to Mid Wales to start my rehabilitation at the end of January 2025. A familiar location, but it will offer just what's needed to kick things off this year! In part one, I show you a few changes to the layout and cooking set-up in the Berlingo.
So it begins... Quick Update as I Start the Reset!
Просмотров 17214 дней назад
Hitting the hills as I start my 2025 mental and physical recovery! Thanks to all who watched and commented on my last video - good to know there's a lot of us in the same boat and, indeed, we must not let it get to us too much and to at least try to concentrate on the good things!
I've let things get the better of me. (Vlog - January 2025)

Hopefully heading away again soon in the Berlingo for a much-needed reset. For the last six months or so, I've been burning the candle at both ends. Yes, I've been having plenty of exercise, but this has been accompanied with a very bad sleep pattern/depravation and too much drinking. It's the GenX way to deal with issues by self-medicating with alcohol, but having deal with terrible Govt. and ...
I must be going soft - Glamping it on the South Coast!
Просмотров 148Месяц назад
Made it down to the South Coast to a well-known location called Durdle Door for some pre-Christmas hiking along the coast. Stayed in a warm and cosy camping pod that I set up in my non-minimalistic style - extravagances included a microwave oven! Reason for the stays in the Shepard's Huts and Camping Pod is that the site rules do not allow stays in 'improvised' car campers like my Berlingo - fa...

Quick Tip! - Simple Makeshift Lamp for When the Lights Go Out!

Actually used this myself during a recent trip away - torches are fine to find your way around, but it's nice to have some ambient/background lighting available for when you're sitting waiting for the lights to come back on! #asmr #notalking A hopefully relaxing 'no talking' video, so anyone can enjoy! Testing the new brew kit I assembled recently in a local woodland (it's not far from a road, so you will hear traffic in the background). Kit worked very well with half of a gel tablet bringing the pot of water to a rolling boil. As I always say and do, leave no trace! A quick message to other RUclips content creator...
Amazing Wildman Woods Car Camp - Eat, Drink, Hike!
Просмотров 2283 месяца назад
Another Autumn trip over to the Brecon Beacons in the Citroen Berlingo no-build camper. The usual mix of eating, drinking and hiking the hills and mountains of this lovely area! Camped at the Wildman Woods campsite which mainly caters for those who wish to experience wild camping, but they do have a couple of spots for small campervans (next to a lovely little lake). Narrow roads, so be careful...
Tough Trek to an Aircraft Crash Site in the Brecon Beacons

In this video, I visit the tragic location of a Vampire VZ106 aircraft that crashed on the 9th October 1953. Although the parts from the aircraft have been moved to resemble the original layout of the aircraft by persons unknown, I was extremely mindful not to trample through, or disturb, the wreckage as a sign of respect to the deceased you man (Pilot Officer J.R.B. Vlog - Tribute to my Working Class Ancestor. A Hard Life.
Life is what you make it, if you let things get to you, in particular things you can't alter or change, then you will simply act like a sponge for all the negativity out there.
We must be careful that the avoidance of negativity doesn't become a complete disconnection from what we consider is right or wrong - that's apathy. Even if it's in some small way, I still believe that I can help alter and change things for a better future.
So where do you think you can set all this up?
Campsites - done so many times (sometimes without erecting the gazebo if the WX is forecast to be windy).
@104s_Unplugged You will find that most campsites don't permit gazebos anymore as their insurance provider won't cover their public liability. Gazebos aren't safe unless they are base weighted.
Weird why camp in a car at a campsite 🤣
It's not for everyone, but I'd be interested to know why you think it's weird?
Nice video chap! The views look stunning, and life is once again affirmed!! Somehow I knew you'd choose the lamb madras first, as I'd be thinking of nothing else if I'd packed it...boom!!
Love it there, especially in the Winter - didn't see or speak to anyone for days! You know me too well - just batch cooked a couple of lamb madras curries ready for next time. They had legs of lamb at half price at Sainsburys before Xmas - just pulled one out of the freezer and made six meals out of it! Cheers.
Thanks, I really liked this video. Currently I don't have a car suitable for camping but I got some nice tips for my next micro camper setup. 😊 I used to make some overnight road trips on my Citroën C3 🚗🇫🇮 but unfortunately I don't have it anymore due to gear box problems. 😔
Glad you liked the video. I keep this vehicle as a 'pop-up' camper due to it being something of a family workhorse as a day job - in addition, I buy cheap older cars and when something major goes wrong, they go to scrap (easy for an vehicle to become a money pit if a lot of money has been put into fitting it out). This one is 16 years old now, so I don't know how much longer it will last but, when it's time is up, I'll look for anything that has enough space in the back (height and length) and cheap. Anything really along the lines of a Berlingo, Skoda Roomster, Honda Jazz or Doblo perhaps. All the best.
Lovely episode man! Nicely filmed 👏👏
Many thanks for the positive comment!
Brill vid 😊
Just found your videos what site is this and where is it please, i am new to this, just bought a Peugeot tepee. Cheers stay safe👍
Hi - the site is Fforest Fields in mid Wales - great place and features in a number of my videos. Cheers.
@104s_Unplugged great I will try it out when I get car sorted and some spare time thanks for info take care👍
great vid
Thanks very much - enjoy your weekend!
Good to see you out and about G. Hope your reset is going well, mate.
It is matey - fresh air and keeping off the hard liquor works wonders!
Great spot there Gary. Would that lookout be a good little spot for a bit of UKFM perhaps ?? Lovely video, keep up the good work mate. I'm on a similar journey to reverse the effects of pre-diabetes except broke my ankle 3 weeks ago so no hills or even flat pavements for me yet !!! But the boot is off now and I'm getting mobile and driving so getting out in the fresh air now down the beach, so even though the hills are out of bounds, the beach and camp stove are very much getting hit as it were. Onwards and upwards to all that need to sort themselves out. 👍
Hi Tim - despite being about 1500ft ASL on the top, the area is really bad for radio! I've set up CB, 446 and Meshtastic, but heard pretty much nothing (I go there a lot, as in all other respects, the area is great). It's the main reason why the radio content on my UKCB channel has been limited - shame, but can't have it all ways I guess! Glad you're on the mend from the injury - that wasn't the best start to 2025!
I enjoy these videos mate
Good to hear - have a great weekend!
Great video chap!!
Thank you Sir!
Nice video chap, and I'm there with you bud.....we all have our sh×t, so there's no shame there.
Quite a few in the same boat going by the feedback I've received. Cheers.
Hi Gary, is that microwave the 700watt model.? Could you tell me how many amps it actually draws. Thanks in advance.
Yes - it's a 700w one. Give me a day or two and I'll let you know the actual amps. Cheers.
I would say about 3 amps on a UK 240v supply chap.
Ok, I've had a chance to measure it - 700w is the actual microwave RF power, but with losses, it's consuming 1040w 'at the plug' (instructions say max input power 1020w, so about right). Basic power divided by volts calculation at 230v gives us 4.52A. Supply voltage can vary, so round it up to 5 amps.
@104s_Unplugged That'll do it chap.

Just came across your channel today. Great vid. Going through much the same issues S you describe. Must get out and about to clear the head. Love the channel
Thanks Dermot - I can certainly vouch for cutting the drink back and hitting the outdoors. Mental and physical repair just with a simple car camp and walking. All the best.
Nice one G. Get that back of yours sorted ASAP 🙏. You're looking good, mate. Keep on keeping on - The Mighty 104.👊📡📶
Yep - this pain isn't going away on it's own! Doing Ok apart from that though - all the best!
Have you ever thought about a PO Box so we can send you things? There's countless little things I'd love you to try out that I use when camping
Hopefully when you've done this hard reset you will be able to look for a job
Hi Jason. If you're thinking I'm on benefits, then I'm not - I don't claim anything. Cheers.
Sorry if I come across like your on benefits, really nothing to do with me. When I was out of work it lead me to drink because of boredom.yes I do have my Radios but that doesn't cure boredom. I've been there myself and then found a job I was happy with and not touched a drink since hopefully I didn't offend you@@104s_Unplugged
The ladies part has arrived.....well done.
Get well soon and enjoy your day ❤
Thanks - you too!
Good luck gary 👍
Fresh air is working wonders already!
Great to have you back Gary. Look after yourself. Cheers, Sky.
Good to hear from you Sky - it's easy to get bogged-down with stuff these days!
Great video again chap!! One thing I've been thinking of is getting a 4g Yagi to improve performance when in remote areas....not sure if you've tried it? I can see it working really well in Wales and other patchy areas.
Directional would work wonders - don't buy the really cheap external aerials with long thin coax though! I did an experiment back in the day with a 3G dongle and a Wok (used like a parabolic dish) - did work well too! Cheers.
Well done Gary, making a great start with your reset. Keep in your own little bubble my friend 👍 all the best
Sometimes it's best to live in your own World and isolate yourself from the woes! All the best!
Good for you Gary, take care of yourself and hopefully catch you down the coax in the near future.
Thanks Simon - shame this area is poor for radio but I should be back doing something on-air soon! Cheers.
Nice one Gary. Each day is a step.
Cheers Fred - it was a great couple of days and it's going well!
Well done Gary 👍. Onwards and upwards buddy.
Going Ok so far!
great vid
Thanks Melanie!
Yeah think its time I sorted my van out with a cheap heater and got out and about , spending to much time locked up at home. All the best bud.
Go for it matey!
We feel exactly the same you are not alone. I’ve cut down how much news and feeds I look at now as it’s too saturating.
Just looking at the comments to this video show there's a lot of people feeling the same way. I'm away at the moment and got 10 hours kip - feeling better already! Cheers.
Well done for being open and honest Gary. I wish you all the very best in your quest for a healthier lifestyle.
Cheers - I just need to keep on top of the drinking really and try not to let current affairs get to me so much!
Hi gary ive lived a very similar lifestyle to you and i was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation about 5 years ago its very common if you are feeling under the weather have a chat with the doctor just to put your mind at rest all the best bud
I certainly fancy getting an ECG done along with a comprehensive blood test - prevention is better than cure! Cheers.
Gary,,,,get to the quacks mate,,,have a bit if an MOT and get a bit of a loose plan matey for getting to feel a bit better bud. I've been feeling exactly the same,,,tired, poor sleep, fed up with our country and how its being run,,,costs of stuff, taxes etc and all the crap news. I went to the docs, and they've found I'm pre-diabetic and have been put on a bit if a healthy eating plan,,,not a diet, but a lower carb situation,,,,can still have a bevvy (sensibly, but at least it isnt off limits),,,, I've been on it for a week and i feel really great mate. See the dr, have a bit of a natter and see what they say. The way I see it, if i can reverse the pre-diabetes without giving up everything then that will be a winner. Bit more walking with a little rig in the backpack, and try and enjoy our lovely countryside, like you do. I sometimes just go down to the beach with a very small stove and brewkit and just watch the world go by, take in the sea air and have a brew and recharge. Tell you what would be great, a bit of a rally/meet up/eyeball(!) in Dorset somewhere where all us outdoor/radio blokes have a meet up and share our loads so to speak and have a bit of a laugh. I go down to Lyme Regis area alot, its my happy place, and only a couple of hours from me on Hampshire south coast. Keep up the great content Gary,,,love the videos and your honesty. You'll get there mate. Tim 26TM2636
Sounds like you've got your act together Tim and a sustainable one at that! I've got it a bit ass-about-face at the moment with doing the exercise (usually the hard bit for most folks) and my diet is Ok, but the general levels of drink consumption have crept up and I regret the few binges over Xmas and that's got to stop! Golden Cap is just up from Lyme Regis and you won't find a better spot for a brew and some radio - I'm not one for crowds (i.e more than about four people!), but it'd be good to meet up around there at some point! All the best!
Nice to see you Gary and well done for being honest. I am with you on the spirits as its so easy to let that get out of control. If I am honest we drink wine with most meals in the evenings. We try to keep it down to a couple of glasses but its more at the weekend. We have a rule that once the single bottle is empty (between two) we wont open another. Even that is too much really but it helps with aches and pains in the winter.
Great to hear from you Fred! Yep, spirits mustn't enter the building from now on - t.b.h, I don't see a bottle of wine each with food spread over an evening being a problem, but moving over to spirits afterwards is going too far (it starts out as a late night tot, but ends up as four!).
I like southern comfort and lemonade I buy the small cans of it now. It helps in regards drinking too much. If I had a full size bottle I would drink it all. So I don't buy full size bottles of it
Im the same bud, i let it get the best of me, I hate this time of year, cold, not much work, and just look foward to downing a few at the wkend atm. I try not to think about the stuff thats going on and drown myself in food, booze and music. I will Maybe try and get a road trip in down south as something to look forward to and maybe hook up as long as it dosnt envolve a pub. All the best buddy and hope to see you soon.
I did go dry for 8 weeks last year - felt terrible, suffered nightmares and didn't lose an ounce in weight. I'm weak with going onto spirits after wine/beer, so just won't have them in the house. Shame, it does take the pain away for a few hours! All the best and hope to hook up at some point (perhaps in the Spring when the clocks go forward).
I have a friend who was a really heavy drinker, he doesn't drink now because of the damage it was causing him, he got a very serious warning from his doctor and it scared him a lot. I'm impressed how someone who drank so much for so long could stop. What's going on in this country is utterly depressing but damaging yourself won't help. Let's wait and see what the next election will bring, it can only get better.
He's lucky because usually alcoholics need medical intervention as it can kill you just stopping
I've been a drinker for many a long year but in moderation however, this last few months I've been prone to binging which has to stop (has already and I'm determined not to slip back!). All the best.
@@104s_Unplugged As we all get older our bodies don't heal as well as they used to, we need to take more care of ourselves. If you can stop yourself from keeping booze in the house it makes things easier. I used to binge a lot when I was younger but I managed to stop drinking completely for about 20 years, I do drink a little bit now, but now I hate the feeling of being drunk. Don't be afraid to ask your GP for help. Take care of yourself, you only get one body.
Your outlook on the current state of the UK mirrors that of the majority, myself included. The advantage you have is that you've recognised where those concerns were leading you, and you're addressing it. I enjoy your content, have done for a long time, and hopefully it won't be too long before we have another copy on the old muppets. Stay strong Gary, you're a top bloke. 👍
We are all sick of it 😮. But nothing we can do. Just concentrate on the things and people that make us happy
Good shout!
We all go through it gary. You are a good bloke. I am a Catholic i was raised one and i find praying the rosary in a quiet place is like meditation 🧘♂️. Gives me peace. Im lucky to have buckfast abbey grounds nearby .
We all need that one thing that provides solace - my Mrs. is a Buddhist and meditation plays a big part in that. For me, it's the hills - all of a sudden, I find the woes just fade away as I head further away from it all. All the best!
May I ask what you do for work
Hi Jason - I lead a relatively simple life and have an income from a rental property. Prior to that, I did 37 years in the electrical and network cabling industries with 28 of those running my own business - in the end, I was totally burnt out from that and, after the pandemic, decided to give a better work/life balance a go. With rising living costs, will probably have to take on a part time job or do something online as a new venture in due course. Cheers.
happy new year and look forward to more videos x
Thank you very much and Happy New Year to you too!
Another little cracker from the Mighty 104. Nice one G.
I enjoy youre videos gary you help me to relax and unwind. Happy new year dorset is a beutiful part of the world
That's good to know. I fancy getting back to Portland soon - not been there for years! All the best for the New Year and thanks for supporting my channels!
Top inspiring videos, bro!... What car roof box is that ? Great bit of kit!
Thanks for the positive comment - I really enjoyed this outing! I have a roof basket (cheapest one on eBay) with just a heavy duty black plastic storage crate on that - it's called a "Really Useful Box". It's held down internally with some heavy duty cable ties and I also have a couple of straps on top too. I keep some a tarp, some kindling and some basic recovery boards in there. Cheers.
Cracking car the old Berlingo! great vid Gary
It is - I do miss having 4WD, but the Berlingo makes for a great pop-up camper and family workhorse. Cheers.
This is a mobile resort...🦩
Yes - with a luxury pillow, heated throw and a great location, no need for an expensive hotel! Cheers
I feel the overwelming urge to do a trip like this in my trailer tent!! Great video Gary.
Totally enjoyed this one! Everything from the snow-covered hills to the stodgy Winter grub and a tot of whisky (or three!) under the electric throw of an evening!
Stunning scenery Gary, what a lucky guy you are very jealous! Great car kit and a hook up too, bet you were toasty warm. Atb 👍
It was great up on the top - was walking the hills for 9 hours total over two days. Awesome in the Winter sunshine!
Gary tbh I don't blame you plug in if the opurtunity is there
In those temperatures, it was well worth a few extra quid for the hook up!
I like you talking
Some like the no-talkers, some don't, but I'll be doing some Vlogs on the next trip or perhaps from those local woods. Cheers.
@@104s_UnpluggedI like you talking too, however this one was just right chap.
