How to narrow a rear axle

Cutting a 9" rear axle down to size and welding new bearing flanges on.
What type of mig welder were you using ? 120 volt or 220 volt and mig wire diameter.
Great video, thanks for the info. Getting ready to narrow a nine inch for the first time, the info on the straighten jig is great.
Thats how we do it out here!
Excellent video!
FYI That's a housing NOT an axle !!!!!!!!!!!!
Wanted to see an axle being narrowed like stated not an axle housing !!!! BUT good video !!!
Yes, I would like to see what is involved with shortening and resplining the shafts.
To align the tubes you can also use 2 pieces of 3” Chanel iron about 10” long. On the exterior of the tube held with c clamps
I think it’s great you took the time to make a video, I just wish you had the camera closer so we could see the action. And I’m a little confused, it looks like you welded on the end caps that are part of the set up jig, not the actual axle bearing housings.
Whare did u order the slip on four link brackets please and thank you
Freaking nuts!
Awesome video!
What make/model welder did you use for this
so im getting ready to narrow a ford 9 inch and i want to buy the jig for the rod measuring kit and bearing housings are the all on the leadmine site ? i didnt see the actual bearing housing with flange for bolts to hold bearing in on in the video those caps were to just hold the rod?
I bought my flanges separate. I only got the jig from Leadmine. The flanges are available a lots of places. Make sure you get the right ones for your bearings.
Wanted to see how you mounted the front fenders
How do I go about achieving measurements from an old rear to cut down my 9"
Never did it about to. 1" off set to the drivers side it needs to be 43" .it's a 9" so maybe this weekend
So both axle tube are the same length after you cut them
It depends if you want the pumpkin center or the drive shaft.
That's what I call custom. When u make it ur self or redesign something else in to what you want it to look like. 99.9% of shops online offer custom look but its really generic very much American standard for HD. There isn't much originality out here any more. Ur fender came out 100% better than when it came in from aka custom factory.
Thank you
You made that look real easy. 👍
@wayne Compton what was the company for the jig plate thanks
Lead mine products. They're listed on eBay.
Good stuff!👍
Very nice job
I wonder if you could use a pipe cutter they use for plumbing
Did anyone else look away when he started welding...or am I the only idiot on youtube today? LOL great vid btw bro. peace
Thanks for the overview. I'm going to start working on cutting down a Dana 60 rear end for my 73 Bronco.
How did it go with the Dana 60
Great Job man thanks for information ...
Dang.... I thought you made the jig yourself. :-(
Do you know what size is the tire? It's a 21 "true rim?
like the roll while you weld technique. great work!!!
I was looking to do something similar to an 8.8. What welder are you using?
It's a Lincoln 220, 1:40 amp.
Wayne Compton, do you think a 110 will work, with preheat?
Denis C . You could use a 110. You'll have to be careful heating the tubes they will move around with th heat. I would make a root pass and multiple passes to complete.
Wayne Compton you can use a125 amp welder with out heat?
I prefer the HD housings.
dont understand why you guys buy chevys then fit a 9".nothing good with chevs, cheap, nasty, especially the diffs, obviously.
don't understand why you Ford lovers put a chevy engine in a mustang. SMH..
harry walker geuss Ford sucks period.
not here in aus,its the chev guys ,on drug money, that buy a ford 1932-18,then fit a chev in it,mainly 350,cos there cheaper than a ford or dodge, plus its peer pressure,"got ta have a chevy,",chev/holden racing, cheat the same here as in u.s.,they just have to win at any cost,or payment to officials.when your comaro ran here at bathurst, wasnt allowed to run disc ,got hot, crashed in barrier.sierras got banned cos they were 4 laps ahead of god,{brocky],BUT,they can run v8 disc on a 6cyl torana, escort size car,&,,,a 9" in there commodores, chev sucks.tell me,,what is a duromax, chevy,????,NO,its jap, isuzu.get your facts right.good job with the diff,we dont have anything like that here,i have 5 u.s. trucks, car.dodge challenger 340 r/t,NOT chev.good luck, H.
i did actually narrow a d44 by 3",used a jeep long axle shaft.fitted d60 brakes,8 stud.into bronco,locker,,d60 rear lsd...i see ford won nascar 3 times in a raw,bout time,thing is,like bathurst now,there all the same running gear,no competition,its a bussiness.we have a driver here,loundes,loves fords,drives for holden.money talks.
i nearly bought a corvette,i like them, till i saw the one leaf rear suspension, turned me off, very wagon train era.
If it wasn't snow covered right now, I'd be loading up and going! Awesome video!
Very cool!!!!
Nice work. Not sure why you have some thumbs down. Guess some internet experts were too busy on the keyboard instead of being in the shop like you.
wake up,hese stikin a 9" in a chev.sacralidge,
Could this type of jig be also used to weld a center section to the axle tubes? Not cutting an axle down, just wanting to weld the tubes to the center section
The jig would not really help with that other than to check if the housing ends are still aligned after welding. The way he rolled the housing to make one continuous weld would be helpeful when welding the tubes to the center.
By the way nova s. Drive lines are off set to the passenger side of the car.
Thank you for the video. Nice job. I like how you rolled the housing to do a continuous weld.
How short can one of these be cut? I wanna make a small block chevy "go-cart"
Thanks for the video. Nice job. I like the idea of rolling the housing to get the full 360 weld in one pass.
Great work
you are pro welder.have you done welding all your life?
Love the view!!
where did you get the jig that had the caps installed on it?
The jig and the bearing caps are separate. The caps you can get from a lot of places. The Jig is Lead Mine Products, I got mine from Ebay.
So just to get it straight, you ordered that jig from Lead Mine Products and you went to your local machine shop and got a shaft with the diameter of 1 1/4", and that fits perfect for the bushings that come with that kit (jig)? Awesome video btw, this is spot on as I'm getting ready to narrow a 9" for my 64 Nova. Thumbs up to you bro!
It's just that simple. Just get all the measurements right.
Anthony Burgess - make sure to specify cold drawn bar stock. It’s held to dimensionally tighter tolerances and is straighter too.
And what diameter is the shaft, 1 1/4 or 1 1/2?
I bought the shaft from a local machine shop. 1 1/4".
Wayne Compton Thanks bro, how much did it cost you?
Only like 20$. No big deal.
Wayne Compton dude, thanks! you rock. Those are some kick as rides you got there
Wayne Compton dude, thanks! you rock. Those are some kick as rides you got there
where do you get the shaft?????
how did you go with welding on the 4-link brackets?? did it effect the housing straightness?
Very nice Wayne! Can't wait to have you put flames on my bike!!!
