Out of curiosity, which brand of paper do you find to easily lose its sizing? For me, I've yet to be able to use any Arches paper and can't understand why people keep recommending it. I've purchased full sheets and pads, years apart, and all used within a few weeks of purchase. Regardless, they have all had terrible sizing right from the start.

I have a couple pads of 100% cotton watercolor paper inherited from my grandmother, who probably bought it over 15 years ago. I keep wondering if the sizing is still good, and if not, whether it’s fixable. This is good to know! If I do end up needing to resize, I imagine I’ll try combining it with my stretching process, wetting the paper through and taping it to a board before adding the gelatin, which ought to help keep it flat.

can you iron the paper using a warm iron to flatten it again?

Interesting watching the painting develop, pity we couldn't see part of it due to the name banner blocking the view.

What a lovely palette you made! Foamboard is lightweight and can be cut with a scalpel if there are any non carpenters thinking of making something similiar to your Daler Rowney style bag. (It won't be as lovely though of course) Well done😊

I use and love the same aluminum pallet as my "studio" pallet.

THANK YOU! I was looking for a way to freshen up sizing as I have way too much paper and started to get into trouble with it.. To keep the paper flat, you could paint the back with water (or size both sides). I usually wet both sides and do very wet washes. The paper stays flat since it's both sides, even though its just 90lb cotton paper. So worth a try.

Some Saunders paper I have has lost its size quite quickly too. Mainly towards the edges.

A good rub with a magic erasure will bring back the white of the palette. I know because I use the exact same watercolor travel palette. It's turned yellow countless times. I've had it maybe 20 years now. When it does, when I'm re-filling colors I give it a good wash with the magic erasure. Looks as good as new and the paints don't pool. Thanks for sharing. You are an amazing artist sir. If I could afford it, I'd buy every painting you make.

I’ve only ever seen this in one or two other videos here on RUclips. Daler Rowney and Cass Art both have it. I am not sure whether Cass Art just happened to have the same-shape palette or whether Daler Rowney produces them for Cass Art.

I have this little novelty one, it’s great. I don’t like all the colours myself, I replace them with chunks of either watercolour sticks or chop up half pans or squeeze tubes ( not honey ones!) but the Daler Downey paint is great quality. It’s so nice to see something with a flat mixing surface. Everything seems to be sloping and causes puddles which I don’t like. I approach the colours from the direction of the void in the middle, then I don’t contaminate. Great video.

hiii phil :D thanks for a great vid, so much info! so yeah, Jackson's Art website sells the same Daler Rowney artist grade set for around 60 quid. if i remember correctly, Cass Art sells it for around 30 quid right? i'd love to get my hands on it as well just as you said, novelty's-sake. but i'm not gonna pay 60 for something i know i could get for 30.(i'm in thailand so i shop at jackson's, not cass art.) -- that trick with removing the sewing, NICE! i never thought about that. -- i think those are the first screw-cap travel brushes i've seen, interesting!

Dear Phil, you're a genius. This is really a huge problem ! Cotton paper is expensive and it's sad that such paper gives unpleasant surprises. You've found the solution!
