Combat Robotics Doesn't Have to Be Expensive
As a challenge to myself, I built a 3lb combat robot, designed to be as cheap as possible. It was an experiment that was never meant to fight but fought anyways.

I had about 7 days to build a combat robot. I spent 2 days going around to shops to buy supplies, waited a few days for Amazon orders to come in, spent 2 days building, and then I competed with my robot. Look at this robot I built for class! This robot was originally designed and built for MIT's 2.007 Design and Manufacturing competition, with the competition theme being Rick and Morty. MIT's ARES All NHRL fights 2024

All of ARES's fights at NHRL March and April 2024 ARES is MIT's newest battlebot in the 30lb weight class, and has competed exclusively at NHRL so far. MIT's Combat Robotics Team is made up of Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen as of 2024, and is made up of completely new members after the club dissipated due to the pandemic.

My son made one for less than that mostly with scrap parts it had a center of mass issue because of the things he used to build it. The tires were rickshaw clutch wheels and old wiper motors. But If you actually want to win a competition you still have to spend. He managed to win 2 matches but couldn't pass to the semi finals

I think he is not using any microcontroller and just using a rc transmitter and receiver

I think if you want to make a good beetleweight that could win say a fight and maybe 2 or 3. Think the minimum is 4 to 5 hundred. 😂

Haha, I’m an EE building a battle bot for my university right now, and I absolutely love the idea of making a robot from jank parts and scrap pieces of metal! You definitely think in a different way, super interesting!

I'm planning out a build where I don't use CNC or 3d printing. It won't be the absolute cheapest, but it should be semi competitive in a real event

I take it you will compete in ant weight? Did you add acrylic to the electronis box to give it some armor?? I like this idea, and it should be part of or an event by itself...Very cool
This is so inspiring! A friend and I have talked about making a battle bot but it seemed intimidating and we haven't started yet, but your foam core and hot glue style is very comfortable and familiar to me since I do a lot of Flite Test models. Your "let's just make something" attitude is awesome!

When is the competition?
This would work in an antweight competition but would definitely get immediately demolished haha. This was a test for a combat robotics hackathon I ran to see how long it would take.
