    I’ve been living in Portugal for over 2 1/2 years having moved here from California. I started in the north for a few months then went to the Algarve lived in Tavira for a few months and then finally in Lisbon where I’ve been for almost 2 years. in the Algarve, I lived in Tavira during the winter and it was dead. I came here with my dog and thought to there is a nice town. It just felt like a ghost town to a big degree. I don’t wanna live in city Central Lisbon nor do I want to have to drive 2 1/2 hours to get here so I’ve decided my focus will be outside of bed near to Lisbon and that would be either Cascais and Estoril or comporta and Troia. Cascais and Estoril. are just about a half hour from Lisbon by train. They’re very well established communities year round, having been the home of exiled royalty, and a hotel that serves as the model for “casino Royale, “the James Bond movie. Comporta and Troia are newer on the scene, and getting very popular as they are about a half hour south of Lisbon. Troia is on a peninsula surrounded by water and they are attracting very wealthy and celebrities who wanna have an exclusive area on the beach but still be close to the city. I’m going to visit there soon and get a good sense of of it. I just find that these areas outside of Lisbon give you the best of both worlds with access to museums theater opera but as well as my medical care and other things that I’ve already established here but you don’t have to deal with the problems of Citi life. I like Algarve, but not as a place to live. I just find it a bit thin, especially in the winter.

    The most annoying thing about Albufeira was the constant barrage of restaurants hustlers vying for possible clients on the street in front of the establishments. A true menace in my opinion. You couldn't get away from them anywhere there was more than one restaurant. Even at the marina where our Airbnb was. It was constant anytime we ventured into old town especially or for a stroll anywhere. Wasn't so in any other place not even in neighboring Oura. We chose to leave town for most meals that we weren't making ourselves just to get away from the hustlers everyday, all day. The most unpleasant experience.

    I live in the Algarve, and I would say the weather and the affordable cost of living with regard to everything except housing are major pros. A major con not often talked about is the low build quality and mold and damp issues. The mold here is next level, and not just in old country houses. It is a problem in expensive new builds, in apartments, in condos, in houses. It's a huge issue.

    • @livinginthealgarve
      @livinginthealgarve 3 месяца назад

      It's definitely a struggle! I hear from people who have lived or still own properties in other coastal parts of the world as well and they report the same. Surely we'll find a solution to this (hopefully sooner rather than later)!

      @jaanaprall9961 3 месяца назад

      @@livinginthealgarve The issues here are much worse unfortunately than in many other coastal areas around the world. I definitely recommend coming here and spending a lot of time checking it out if you are considering buying property here. The lack of insulation, proper foundations, modern roofing, and heating and cooling that function well are ubiquitous. It has shocked me how bad it is even in high priced real estate. I love the Algarve! It's beautiful, but this is a really serious issue here.

    We stayed at the marina in a condo called Legoland. A short walk to old town. Lots of restaurants along the marina and small shops across the street. There was even an outdoor laundry facility presumably for the boat owners moored at the marina. It was nice and quiet in the evenings without the hoopla of old town. There one annoying thing about Albufeira was the restaurants and bars attacking you as one walks by to come inside..... I found it very unpleasant and reminded me of Mexico Riviera. Playa in particular. We specifically stayed away from old town eateries and bars for this reason. The Marina was much more pleasant in that regard. It was almost a small town atmosphere after all the boat tours ended for the day and the tourists left, leaving the area for us "locals" in the evenings. It was always pleasant to come "home" after spending the day driving around the algarve to come back to the marina in the late afternoon evenings to relax and not be surrounded by tourists. And the sunsets were amazing from our balcony every night.

    Well, Canadian, American or British immigrants (I know they prefer to be called "expats", but that's what they are in reality), have advantages and disadvantages when they move to another country. Bureaucracy is part of any immigration process, and I have to admit that in Portugal it's a bigger issue than in most EU countries. That being said, I have to add that the Americans, Canadians and British have the extra problem of being from a non EU countries, and, inevitably, since Brexit, the British are treated the same way as an immigrant from South America or Africa, with all the extra paperwork that that implies. In terms of language, well, if a Portuguese goes to Canada, USA or UK, can you imagine him just speaking Portuguese? If you want to live in another country, don't expect all the locals to speak your language, be humble, and make the effort to learn theirs, or... just accept there will be times when people around you won't understand you. That said, hope you enjoy the sun down at Algarve and have a pleasant stay, all immigrants are important to this country.

      You're absolutely right! There are advantages and disadvantages to moving to any country. For me, the advantages of the Algarve are still much much greater than the disadvantages🙂

      People who are immigrating to Canada, regardless of their country of origin, has to complete as much paperwork work as any other country’s requirements . There is the application, to be sent to the specific embassy based on your country of origin, with a upfront fee of hundreds of $s. As part of the application one has to provide all the necessary documents. Regardless of the country of origin you have to pass a French or an English requirement test; background checks, financial fitness, etc. You have to provide a medical report from a designated physician and pass the medicals. And if you have a chronic illness no good luck is going to come your way and the fee you paid with the application is gone👋👋 if denied regardless of the reason. The Canadian application process takes years before your application gets processed. While you are waiting, babies are born, people change their minds or I am sure sometimes leaves this mortal world during their waiting period.

    It might be a good idea to not put music in the video if sometimes you talk very softly. Some of the words cannot be heard. The first one doesn't only applies for non EU citizens. The second one (waiting times for healthcare) is a problem across the whole of the EU. It helps if you have money for private healthcare.

    Burocracia is a big problem in Portugal not only for expats but for the Portuguese too.I know I’m Portuguese and I complain. I don’t know what matter with the government departments but they don’t work properly that’s for sure. What ever we go is a mess.

      It truly is frustrating for expats and locals alike. I think there are improvements trying to be made though, so let's stay hopeful🙂
