    I agree on the sorcery part particularly. In Howard magic are the DARK arts. I still remember in The Scarlet Citadel where Pelias said that the plant that had been drinking his soul had "roots that go down to hell" and that Conan's sword would have been useless against what was clinging to the roots. That should give you some shudders and an idea of how dark the dark magic Conan is. Its pacts with otherworldly entities and ritual appeals to evil gods fueled by the blood of the innocent. Its full of horror and unnatural beings. Even when its used for "good" as in N'Longa in Hills of the Dead (Solomon Kane tale) its still unnatural and makes your skin crawl and your stomach turn. Its something that is that should not be.

  • @BanjoSick

    Leiber is nowhere near Howard prose wise. He is witty and urbane but not a stylist on Howards level. No one except Tolkien has better prose in Fantasy.

    So progressive sword and sorcery for modern readers? If so, count me out. Progressives destroy everything. When I hear that white guys make up most of the readers but we want to make it more inclusive, I want to vomit. Sword and sorcery DEI. I'll never buy that magazine. Woke rubbish.

    Almost 25 years ago I dumped most of my sci-fi and fantasy and changed focus almost completely to non-fiction; several years ago I culled out a bit more. Robert E. Howard is the only one of my favorite writers of either genre that I am still collecting and one day I will have every one of his stories.

    Huh, after seeing Caslte of the Undead I'm thinking it'd be cool if Solomon Kane was an ancestor to Prof. Abraham van Helsing, and that's why the Prof. knew about vampires and monsters. Would be cool, like the descendant of one of Dracula's greatest foes returns to finish what his ancestor could not.

    Great episode! That said...no mention of Merritt? REH called him "great". ALL of the Weird Tales S&S authors--REH, Smith, Moore and Kuttner-- were Merritt fans. More modern authors like Moorcock and Wagner were/are Merritt fans. Merritt novels like THE SHIP OF ISHTAR and DWELLERS IN THE MIRAGE are very much S&S-adjacent. Good call-out on Boris' 'calm' faces!

    • @emporium-of-the-weird
      @emporium-of-the-weird Год назад

      He wanted to inherit their land for his employer, who was a railroad tycoon. Who in turn wanted to build a railway through that land. At least that’s what I remember, been a while since I watched it. The one thing I do definitely remember was that Franks employer never wanted him to kill them. Frank of course was a crazy person and killed them anyway, for his own sick pleasure.

    And for the people in the back - a focus on inclusivity is not contradictory to having great stories. An editor will always have to make choices, regarding 'the best stories' - there may be two great stories which are too similar, or an awesome story which doesn't fit the theme. To make it an S&S anthology is already making a choice, as it excludes absolutely awesome stories which are not S&S This collection is interesting for a huge potential audience who want to see stories with other protagonists than the over-represented straight white guy. And that audience can indeed include older, straight, white guys - like myself.
