What Women Wore 200 Years Ago: Sewing a Regency Era Chemise, Short Stays, and Bodiced Petticoat
Просмотров 214Месяц назад
The Regency Era, known for its classical simplicity, lacks the layers that most 19th century silhouettes require. One possible combination of undergarments includes a chemise, a pair of short stays, and a petticoat with a bodice. As my first historical sewing project, I'll be recreating these three garments using historical sewing techniques. Fashion History Sources: The Workwoman's Guide by A ...
Making a Rayon 1940s Blouse | Vintage Sewing | McCall 4854

In my journey to build a vintage wardrobe, one of the main problems I've encountered is finding basic white blouses in vintage cuts and accurate fabrics. Because of their versatility as the fashionable silhouette changed, few true vintage blouses survive. Furthermore, rayon crepe-the most common blouse fabric in the 1940s-is rarely sold in anything but prints today. So when I found this white r...
Embroidering Custom Patches of my Favorite Music | Simon & Garfunkel and Josh Turner

Because a lot of my favorite music artists don't make official merchandise, I decided to make my own! I designed and embroidered a patch of a lyric from Simon and Garfunkel's "Punky's Dilemma" and part of the album cover of Josh Turner's "Public Life". Materials used: - Embroidery needle - Embroidery thread - Embroidery Hoop - Fabric Scissors - Fabric to Embroider onto (I used cotton twill) 0:0...

Wow...such varied talents ....and prolific ...and beautiful!!
Oh, my goodness....such perseverance!! Great job and adorable plushies! New subscriber!!!
That third clamp that you have, the one with a straight upper part? It goes with the Junior Miss. (I have a Kenmore version of the same machine. Nicely built and sews well.)
I have been wanting to make this too and have found it daunting as well! I think because It's got so many parts and looks very fiddly. I wish it was possible to get someone to make it FOR me lol.
so pretty!
I enjoyed watching your video. You did an amazing job with the dress!
this was sooo therapeutic to watch and i learned so much ❤ so amazing!! great work done 🎉
Thanks!! Glad you liked the video!
thank u for this informative video 🫶🏼 i am in love with your content
Can I get one please
gah!! this is so incredible and underrated, everything you made here looks amazing, this is such a lovely talent you have ❤
Out of the shirts you made, which would you say is best for hot weather (from best to worst)? We just moved to a very uot yet humid climate and its been difficult finding womens clothes for the weather... Then RUclips puts your video in front of me. 😊
Anything that doesn’t cover the shoulders is definitely best, if you wanted to make the knit tank tops even more breathable you could knit them from cotton yarn instead of acrylic or wool. The two button up shirts are made from quilting cotton which is on the thicker side, and they’d be perfect for hot weather made from a thinner cotton. The rayon blouse has the most breathable fabric, and it would be very comfortable made with short sleeves. Hope this helps!
Beautiful work! Regency is one of my favourite eras even though I think not as many people seem to love it until another season of Brigerton comes out lol. The diaphanous fabrics and the empire silhouette is so pretty and fairy like to me. It's really nice to see another person give it a go!
Thanks, glad you liked the video!
I discovered your channel today and I have watched several of your videos. My goodness you are talented!! You knit, crochet, make patterns, sew, embroider such a talent!! I enjoy your videos. How did you learn how to knit and crochet? I am going to make a bodyform in the near future. I have always wanted a bodyform but like you I can't afford one made for me because they are ridiculously expensive. Keep making videos know that there are people that are truly enjoying them.
Thank you so much!! I started by crocheting amigurumi and expanded from there, and I started knitting through vintage patterns!
I guess it must've been the same in the US as where I'm from. My grandmother was a dressmaker actually. She passed before I was born, but I remember when I was younger, and even as recently as 10 years ago, if I wanted something to wear, I would go to a dressmaker to have it made to my measurements. I only recently (maybe 4 years ago) learned to sew properly in order to make my own clothing now, but there's nothing like getting a tailor made garment that fits perfectly!
It has been fascinating watching your journey from draft to finished dress and everything you learned from Mildred is going to help me too in my own sewing I think lol
❤❤ heart of gold...
Setting sleeves flat is supposed to be for more casual garments where there's not a ton of easing or sleeve fitting to do. Setting sleeves in the round is for when you have a more tailored fit, a higher sleeve cap, or more easing. So I guess Mildred probably should have set them in in the round. Oops. Maybe this was a home ec project and she didn't really care to do it "right," which would also explain why it didn't have a closure--don't have to worry about it fitting if the teacher isn't going to make you wear it as part of your grade, and maybe as a teen her shoulders were narrow enough to fit into it. I've also seen other historic sewers point out that expecting fine finishing on the inside of home sewn garments is really a pretty new thing. Usually as long as it looked OK from the outside and wasn't going to fall apart, the inside could be (and probably would be) some level of mess. Hers definitely is some level of mess.
Well! That’s good to know that “some level of mess” is acceptable! Also the difference between when to set in the round and when to do it flat ❤. Thank you!
A job well done🎉
🐓❤
Thank you for this helpful video
I am a regular listener of your channel and have watched all your videos Your video quality is very nice
❤
Wonderful! Fascinating, detailed and I love how you kept it real and told us about your learning experience! Very much looking forward to seeing your dress and how you made it. Thank you so much for sharing. 😊❤
Full video on how I recreated the dress is up! ruclips.net/video/5boAuRxblHY/видео.html
lovely video, it really helped with a doll I'm making!
Glad you liked it! As a side note, sometimes historical dolls survive more commonly than full-size garments, making them a great way to study everyday garments that wouldn't normally be saved. You can usually find them in digitized museum collections, in case that's helpful to you!
thank you now i can make pretty bird for my bro
She looked very happy 🥰
Oh my goodness, you are fabulous!!! I also watched the closet historian. She is wonderful as well. I agree. Oh my goodness you’re a wonderful seamstress and you should be proud of everything you make. All of your endeavors are absolutely beautiful and elegant. Thank you so much for your time. So very sincerely.😁😁😁 back up
it looks amazing! i love the coziness of your channel. the frog pot is so cute too 😭🫶
I see that you love the colour green.
The way how the lining is attached has been done very well. It looks very neat 😊
you HAND SEWED...ONE HUNDRED!...ADORABLE plushies...that's insane 👍
Nice!!!
great job, this is beautiful.
it´s a beautiful pattern of a classic.
Pattie's sister Jenny wore the dress as well - she's the one in the video at the beginning playing the flute. Very cool sewing project!
that turned out awesome!
There isn't a hard and fast rule that you can't ever set sleeves in flat, but it's generally not recommended for a few reasons. The book you read was before spandex was used as prevalently as it is today. Fit issues: Sleeves with a high curve (more fitted) or with a lot of ease (extra fabric) can be tricky to sew in flat. The armhole and sleeve cap may not match up smoothly, leading to puckers or a sleeve that sticks out instead of conforming to the body. Comfort: Setting sleeves in creates a curved seam under the arm, which allows for more freedom of movement. Flat-sewn sleeves can feel restrictive and uncomfortable. Mostly a truth for wovens like dress shirts. Aesthetics: For woven fabrics (like cotton or linen), a flat-sewn sleeve can sometimes look a bit flat itself, since it doesn't drape as nicely. However, there are some situations where setting in sleeves flat might be okay: Knit fabrics: Knits are naturally more stretchy, so easing the sleeve cap in is often less critical. Simple sleeve designs: Sleeves with a low curve and minimal ease can work well sewn flat. Personal preference: Some sewers find flat-setting easier, especially for beginners.
Thank you for the phobia warning! Really enjoying your history lesson :)
this process video was so calming lol the lighting and the voice over 🫶!! it turned out so cute
UPCOMING VICTORIAN PROJECT SOUND SO INTERESTING
Awesome video! Was really cool hearing about the story behind the dress and how it pertained to the counterculture movement of the 60’s! Can’t wait to see some of the cool projects you have for us this summer!
I like your idea about the split skirt and they did still have split skirts in the 30s too, but I think the looseness of women's trousers has slightly less to do with looking like a skirt than a mix of that they kinda come out of loose pyjamas, (either beach or lounging) and mostly to do with modesty, you didn't want things to cling too closely and suggestively to private parts lol 😆 You notice that the crotch on early to mid 30s trousers are very low, (sometimes almost to the knee) and that the closure is always on the side for women's wear even on garments like riding breeches where otherwise they are practically identical to men's. Its also interesting to bare in mind that there was a trend in early mid 30s men's fashion when extremely wide baggy trousers were the vogue (see oxford bags for the extremest version), whether or not this coincided with slacks entering a wider acceptable range of uses for women and influences its style or not I don't know for sure 🙂
Are you gonna upload the video ???
Working on it 😅😅
