To Brian it’s about keeping peace, respecting the fans and honoring the memory of his brothers. To Mike it’s all about, how can I get people to notice me. How much money can I bilk out of my minimal contributions. Mike Love is an ass and always will be.

Am I the only one who thinks double tracking lead vocals is an awful and bizarre practice? It’s no surprise that Brian’s favorite albums of his own band are the realest ones without double tracking, Wild Honey and Friends. They probably feel more true to life for him. Also if you compare Beatles “If I fell” mono to stereo the mono with single tracked John lead opening vocal is vastly superior to the fudged double tracked one, in fact I never listened to that song at all till i found the mono, because that double track vocal sounded bad to me and I felt it must be a throwaway song if they didn’t care to fix it, yet the mono mix is now one of my favorite Beatles songs and I see how good it is!tell me what the heck is wrong with a single tracked John? He sounds real, authentic, cool. Double tracked just hits me weird, it’s fake, artificial, like the second pass makes it all fake. On my own recordings I gave up double tracking a long time ago and never looked back. If it’s not good single tracked, it’s just not good. Listen to Nirvana Unplugged, would it be a better album if Kurt went to a studio and double tracked all his vocals? This question shows how stupid the whole idea is in the first place, I like the sound of authenticity and realness. And I always loved Smiley smile, wild honey, and friends a lot too.

Once you take years off away from The Beach Boys world I feel like you can reassess things and realize that Smile is basically a marketing mythology. It was *just* an album in production that got shelved and the band moved on. The band lacked creative genius without Brian so used some songs to fill out later albums. I don’t think the album would have been as groundbreaking as fans seem to think. It would get lumped in with other psychedelic records of 66/67 era. It didn’t have enough good big songs to stand out much. And besides imho Brian was literally always making crazy whacky sogs like ALL SUMMER LONG sounds like Smile to me but, dare I say it, better?

Brian Loves people and his Fans. When he was going to be at Barnes & Nobles in Chicago signing autographs , I wrote him and told him I was disappointed because I couldn't ride the South Shore train that day. Surprisingly, I got a package in the mail from California and Brian , out of the blue , had sent me a signed CD of his Brian Wilson album!! The guy is the best !! Thank you, again, Brian..I will always cherish it. Love you like a brother ,Brian ! I am 75 today. Peace.

"The world was finally ready". Agreed. Think about him creating and putting Smile together through most of '66 into '67. No one was near, as advanced, what he was doing, other than Frank Zappa. In the context of the times, he's right that average listeners weren't ready. Musicians were, which is why so many started realizing him to be a genius as early as '64.

PS I wrote him back in 1998 and told him I wouldn't be able to make it to a Chicago signing at Barne & Nobles bookstore.( South Shore trainfrom north Indiana was down) Imagine my surprise when a week later the postman brought me a free signed CD directly from Brian. He loved /loves his fans people. No Doubt. Peace.

Al Jardine... a relatively unsung hero in the band. His bright, beautiful voice fit perfectly into the harmony. And through all of the troubles in the band... Al provided stability. I recently heard his Endless Summer Band and was blown away. The musicians in his band are mostly former long-time Beach Boys backup musicians. It's the best version of the Beach Boys by far. Got to meet Al after the concert and sing parts of his Winds of Change song with Al. An experience of a lifetime. He was very nice and friendly.

Watching this interview, it is so clear to me why these guys couldn’t stay together as a band. As cordial and “nice” as they are, to me there is a clear undercurrent of weirdness and discomfort between them. They all see things pretty differently, and at a certain point as old men that was never going to change

That's why Brian was so quiet. He let Mike (I) Love Myself, do most of the talking. Even when Love tried to compliment Brian he did it with a twist of the knife in Brian's spleen and a high-five to himself. Just too obnoxious for words. Who could work with such a megalomaniac?

Oh man, this was when he was *_DEEP_* in the thick of Landy’s control. I’ve noticed that a lot of people in these comments have commented on how ‘great’ or how ‘healthy’ they think Brian looks here, and that just goes to show how deceiving looks can be. People just see a thin physique and superficially equate that with being ‘healthy’. Brian was anything _but_ “healthy” in the late 80’s. He was under 24-7 supervision/control, being pumped full of a plethora of bizarre prescriptions and only being allowed to eat minuscule portions of food at certain times of day. He was effectively being starved, hence the thin physique. When I look at him here and listen to him speak, it just doesn’t sound or look much like Brian Wilson to me. It comes off like some prescription drug-fueled automaton, devoid of the little quirks and eccentricities that have endeared me to him both before and after this period of his life. It’s hard to look at, honestly. I’m just glad that he finally got out from under Landy’s oppressive ‘care’ a few years after this. I look at the Brian who was playing those SMiLE concerts in the 2000’s, and compare it to this (1987) version, and I see a completely different man. A much happier and more relaxed man. Here, he just looks like some cardboard cutout of Brian Wilson that has developed the ability to talk.

Having had the privilege of working with Brian (before this interview and actually met Carl along with his late wife), glad that they were harmonious and seemingly get along with each other during this interview Compare Beach Boys’ Kokomo (without Brian) versus Love and Mercy (without The Beach Boys) that came out at the same time People should remember that no record company would sign The Beach Boys without Brian - because he’s DA TALENT!! Brian was (and still is) a GREAT PERSON!! The Boys’ gift was their harmonies. Mike Love believes that he is talented as Brian and fought for songwriting credits in songs that he had minimal input. Mike Love wanted to always sing songs about surfing and cars Brian wrote 29 albums within 7 years

Landy did far more damage to Brian than any of the drugs, booze, or overeating ever could. I see more than a few comments about how he supposedly “saved” Brian, but no. As a former addict, one thing I know from experience is that the only person who can ‘save’ an addict is themselves. It’s up to the individual to decide when they’ve had enough, and then to actively seek help. I was the target of numerous interventions, and none of them worked. It wasn’t until I was finally at such a low point that I decided I was done, and at that point nothing was going to stop me from getting clean and getting the help I needed. At that point in my life I was extremely vulnerable. It would have been all too easy to take advantage of someone in my mental state at that time. Fortunately for me, that didn’t happen. Unfortunately for Brian, at his hour of need, Landy came into his life.
