Rottweiler herding sheep - New sheep after one year of training

We have been training sheep herding for one year and we are ready for different sheep! The new sheep are a bit more skittish and nervous and will be good to teach my boy to keep the distance.

I tried to combine the different obstacles into a 4 minute long little trial, using the obstacles that are available at the moment. Similar things can be found in sheep herding competitions.

Rottweiler - 30 Day Workout

I wanted to build some muscle in my boy and I tried out this 30 day workout: 3x per week strength training (bite work 20-30 mins, pulling 15-30 mins or weights of up to 20% of the body weight of my dog) 2x per week cardio training (running or football 20-30 mins) 1x per week endurance training (swimming 30-60 mins) It is best to alternate between strength exercises and cardio exercises and also...

Now we are ready to do some real work! The task was to do a slalom, walk along the fence, drop off the sheep within the square marked by the sticks and leave with the dog. Then we should pick up the sheep again and walk back along the fence, through the slalom and back into the pen!

    What a great companion to have for a Rottweiler. Greater Swiss mountain dogs to me seem to have Rottweiler in them or are a descendant of a dog breed made into them similar to the Rottweiler. They definitely look and share similar traits. They look happy together and wish you the best success with them ✌🏽♥️

    This is so good to see. I’ve just moved rurally, have had Rotties for over 25 years and was curious to see good videos of Rotties being worked with livestock. Most on RUclips are simply videos of Rotties with prey drive but zero training and owners just allowing them to chase and challenge cattle or sheep. This video was exactly what I was searching for. Maybe one day, one of my dogs will be working the livestock on the farms next door. Great job!

    We would like to know about you, what foundations you took for your herding training, the work you have done with your dog is fantastic at this time when it seems that there is only a show of beauty and sport left... the dog is a precious specimen. where is it located? It seems to me an ideal environment, I have seen your dog run free through your town and it is enviable compared to our jurisdictions.

      Thank you for your kind words! I agree that Rottweilers are unfortunately not used much for herding anymore, I would like to change that. My Rottweiler is from Germany but currently we live in Prague, Czech Republic. They love dogs in Prague and a lot of people don't use leashes in the city, not even next to busy roads. Truly a lovely place to live with a dog! The foundation with my Rottweiler was general obedience and a lot of inhibition training, which turned out to be great for sheep herding. But I didn't know I would do sheep herding. I tried the protection work first, but my boy isn't loving it, he will defend me but doesn't care about attacking and running after decoys.

      @@czechmydog1669 I only regret not sharing the same language in order to be able to exchange in-depth knowledge in a more fluid way about what we observe happening with this fantastic breed... I do not like to call myself a breeder, I identify myself as an activist in the breed, the resistance, I would like to be able to entrust you with a project that I am carrying out with some friends, and that has found its greatest obstacle in what you have achieved. That is why I admire you . Perhaps the Czech Republic is the perfect enclave to carry out a project of the magnitude that we propose, the place seems to be an enclave in which the roles have not yet been changed and dogs are still our best friends ... in my country, everything is set to change for the worse regarding how to live with our animals and I feel that it is important for the Rottweiler that this special project goes ahead... (I hope that the google translator does its job well and is not writing crazy things...) Is there the possibility of communicating by a less exposed means?

      Wonderful question! I always wanted to get my rotties into herding but unfortunately there was no place nearby that offer it, and the ones I did find were border collie only. Rotties are my breed and I don't really understand why anyone would want anything else. They are perfect! That said, I did have a border collie/ German pointer mix, she had 3 legs so again I couldn't do herding but I've been wondering the difference in the different breed herding style. A rottweiler eyes are softer than the border collie stare, and I always thought that the strong stare was what really got the herd to move. Long winded way of saying thank you for putting up the video!

    How high energy do you think Rottweiler are? I like them as a breed and lost my black lab in December. I've walked my neighbours rotty and she said how energetic he is but in comparison to my lab at 10years old the rotty was slow. Like a jeep wrangler Vs rally car. Rather than run back and fourth a probably do the same walk 4x the rotty just plodded by my side.

    • @czechmydog1669
      @czechmydog1669 2 года назад

      Generally less energetic than Labs, you made the right observation. They still have good stamina and can go for long hikes, but they are usually not the type to run back and forth all the time. As puppies and young dogs it's different of course, but you still cannot compare the energy level to a Lab :D Just beware that even though Rottweilers lack the energy they make up for this with stubbornness and dominance, especially towards same sex dogs.

    this only can be rottweiler x ridgeback mix. It's impossible the ridgeback is pure breed. black and tan, the colour of the rottweiler, is rezessiv to the dominant red of the ridgeback. if you bred a rottweiler with a pure breed ridgeback so, in the first generation, all puppies will be red like the ridgeback.

    • @czechmydog1669
      @czechmydog1669 3 года назад

      Hi, the health of the Rottweiler really depends on the breeder. If you take a puppy from a good breeder that is doing all the health tests then you can expect a healthy dog. If you then provide good food and exercise, keeping the dog at a healthy weight, they can live up to 12 years. On a side note, if you live in a hot country and need the dog to herd the sheep daily for several hours, the Rottweiler might not be the optimal breed for you. They don't do very well in hot climates because of their black fur and high muscle mass.
