I visited Sao Paulo this year and was truly astonished at the sheer size of the city. Although it is true that the city has 12M people, the greater metro area has a combined population of 22.4M. Its just a massive sprawling urban jungle that I quite enjoyed. Sao Paulo is a very grungy gritty city that has an ongoing drug, crime and homelessness problem. These things were obvious. But what I was impressed with was the abundance of parks, cycle paths, healthy subway and bus infrastructure, cultural centres and so on. The city is striving in certain areas. They excel at traffic manangement. I had expected traffic congestion to be much worse. In Rio, sometimes your only option was to take a mototaxi to zip through the conjestion, but in Sao Paulo even at rush hour, I was no more than 5 min. in traffic. I believe the public transport (some of which is free btw) and the restrictions on cars entering the city centre at certain times help alot. The city is also very walkable. Wide sidewalks, trees and ample pedestrain insfastructure make going on foot relatively unchallenging. All in all, despite the obvious challenges of managing a massive city like SP, I think the urban planners are making strides.
