I’ve had a fear of the ocean my entire life and I tried playing Subnautica to attempt to face my fears. Lo and behold, my mind refuses to let me progress past the starting area and am literally unable to play out of pure fear and terror

For me Subnautica actually helped my thalassaphoboa. When I fist started playing the game I was glued to the surface, I was so scared to go down into the unknown. Over time I built the sea moth, prawn suit, & the cyclops I started having a false sense of security, so I would start venturing downwards. Over time I started to get over my fear of the deep unknown, until after hours & hours of play time I felt like I had mastered my fear. It was an amazing experience & I absolutely love the first Subnautica game. The second game was a disappointment for me, though. They changed themes & artistic directions too much. I really didnt like the voiced protagonist. It took me out of the moment constantly.

The whale thing is so chill-inducing if you think about our real-world whales behaving like Reaper Leviathans. Just watching how fast that large friend in the clip moved through the water despite its size, I'm pretty convinced that if whales were naturally inclined to hunt humans we straight-up would not have made it through the Age of Sail without being Essex-ed into permanently staying on land.

The Magnus archives really captures the fear of the ocean so well for me with the vast. I’m so fucking scared of the ocean and I got subnautica to help with that fear but everything scared me. I tried playing on creative but just seeing the big creatures was just too much and I would shut the game off. I started listening to the Magnus archives and one episode I always think about it this person stuck in the ocean constantly feeling themselves drown and their body burn for oxygen but they never die. They have been stuck there so long they don’t know which way is up, it’s just pitch black ocean but they swim to the way they think is up, only to feel someone large graze their feet, the skin of the thing being enough to tear their skin. I think about that scene so much and how absolutely horrifying that idea is

i had thalassophobia before playing subnautica, what i have now? thalassophobia, but its even worse now after i fully played subnautica, i still love the ocean and everything yet im scared of the deepness of some water, the void that is the most hardest thing to avoid in the game so that makes it even worse, when you just casually swim and you think thats a long drop, no its not just a drop... the feeling that ANYTHING can be in the void and you just casually look down and see the darkness raising up, when i saw the void for the first time i was like nuhuhuh im going back to sleep in my life pod for 10000 days before i go back to the ocean

Had Thallasophobia long before Subnautica came onto the scene and it’s entirely because of some video games: watching Spyro drown in Spyro 1 unable to help him, a glitch that happened in Croc which caused the camera to glitch which showed nothing but twisted black and blues, Divers Dream level 2 (shark level) and also Spyro 2: Aquaria Towers. Weird thing is I am terrified of water levels in video games but in real life I’m the first person running to the sea, maybe it’s a branch of this phobia idk

Explained it perfectly, playing skyrim for the first time after my boyfriend told me about how it was his favorite game, that gave me a feeling that you only feel for the first time playing it. The music, struggling to keep Lydia alive, grinding skills, the exploration, the story, and characters, it all sucked me in easily. The game is 100% replayable, but the only thing that gives me that familiar feeling to the first, is the music. Nothing beats it.

I fear not the bodies, but huge depths especially when you don't see the bottom, like...just pitch blue or black color down you. That freaks me out and I start thinking like 'BRO IT'S NOT OK, IT'S SO SCARY, IDK WHAT IS GONNA HAPPEN, PLEASE LET ME GO BACK!' The Void is one of these most scariest sh*t moments (I cannot explain, it's some kind of unexplainable thing) Like...if void could be bright or at least white instead of pitch black, then I would go in it after some time, but that pitch black color UNDERWATER, while being ALONE and NO SURRONDINGS, this is EXACTLY the way to scare me to 100% + panic + realization + creepy fantasy + f***ing heart attack I guess...

When I played this game the first time I was fully aware that I already had talassophobia and I was challenging myself to do it. The first mf reaper I encountered was so fucking terrifying to me that I almost stopped playing. [Spoiler] Then I went to that bit of land you can go via portal but I couldn’t find the portal to come back so I had the brilliant idea to go back by…. swimming. I kept in the surface all the time and never looking down, almost shitting myself all the way. But the game just decided it wasn’t enough fear so the Emperor appeared as a ghost in front of me and spoke to me….. I had nightmares for 2 long weeks because of this

Whats really scary about the void is a ghost spawns every 30 seconds and 3 is the max that will spawn but the developers made it so when they spawn they will always spawn out of your field of view even if you look around quickly they always spawn wherever you aren't looking as if the void wasn't scary enough😭

I don't like playing horrors, it's scary as hell when you have to go into situation and by yourself face the things. Somehow Subnautica was worse nightmare, but I was hooked so much. It gives you safehaven you can build yourself. You venture into deep in your own pace. Ultimately I conquered my fears. I was able to learn the ways of the ocean. I was still intruder with a huge disadvantage, but I had experience and equipment. I took submarine. I was able to ignore small threats. I was able to confidently scout with sonar larger ones. I was able to consistently sneak past leviathans without any risk. My peak point of this rite of passage was when I was mining in prawn suit and accidentally attracted ghost leviathan. . I could not run in this machine, so I stood my ground. I jumped forward against the monster and punched him in his face so hard that I scared it off. I felt more badass then in Doom, and that says something. In the end I was feeling like in home. Leaving the planet was even a bit sad

The "5% is explored" is a stubborn internet myth that's simply not true. Or rather, what it means is *how much of the ocean bottom is mapped down to the resolution of one square meter*. At lower resolutions, 100% of the ocean is explored. How much we've discovered in terms of species? Well that would be hard to pinpoint, specifically with the very deep oceans (new species of jellies or worms or arthropods are discovered every time, sometimes fish), but the surface and lower depths are very well-known. So please, stop mentioning the 5%...

I really appreciate you taking the time to review the game! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. One point I do want to make clear is you absolutely do not need to scan the QR code for the yellow pdas to view them, every single QR code is added to the codex as indicated by the pop up message on the top left of the screen when you find them. So you can boot up and view them right now. We also never shipped the game without weapon binds, the pre-release copy that some reviewers had a full month before release did not include that feature, but the release build did. Lots of QOL improvements are coming within the next few weeks to address some of your concerns, like the lack of button prompts! There's a lot we could have done better with SPRAWL, and we hope we'll be able to share more of what's next for us soon :)
