Holst: Phantastes Suite (1911) III. Sleep (arr. for piano and clarinet)
Просмотров 5092 года назад
In 1911, Holst composed a suite for orchestra called “Phantastes.” It was performed on July 23 1912 at the Queen’s Hall, London, by the New Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer. However he withdrew it after this first (and only) performance. The piece has since been forgotten. Recently with the help of some other Holst enthusiasts we've been able to look at some scans of the original ma...

In 1916 Holst wrote the Phantasy on British Folk Songs for string quartet. The premiere was in 1917 but Holst withdrew the work claiming it was his ‘guilty secret’. *sorry for my accent This video is to celebrate Gustav Holst's legacy. This is a incomplete private recording of a piece called Seven Choruses from the Alcestis of Euripides, made during a concert at St. Paul's Girls School in celebration of Holst's centenary in 1974. This piece was written for unison voices, 3 flutes and harp by Holst in 1920 for his students in St. Paul's. To complement the v...
Gustav Holst: Sita, Op. 23 (1899-1906) Closing Scene From Act III
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.2 года назад
This is a rare live recording made by Opera Viva on LP, 1983. At the time when Holst began composing his opera Sita in 1899, Richard Wagner’s influence was prevalent in fin-de-siècle London and was especially strongly felt by the young composer. Holst would later describe the opera as ‘good old Wagnerian bawling’. In 1906 it was submitted for the Ricordi opera competition, but failed to win the...

Gustav Holst: Hecuba's Lament, Op. 31, No. 1, H. 115 - for alto, female chorus and orchestra (1911)
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 года назад
Holst written Hecuba’s Lament using Gilbert Murray’s English translation from Euripides’ The Trojan Women, The work is scored for contralto solo, three-part female chorus, and orchestra, and with characteristic attention to practicalities Holst arranged the orchestration so that the work could be played with reduced instrumentation, even so, he had to wait several years for its first public per...

Where can I get the sheetmusic please??
RWC 2003, so much nostalgy
Awesome video , but year did gone
Just wonderful! - thanks to whatever algorithm sent it to me...and such marvellous perceptive interviews, too!
White creativity is so beautiful.
Wow, so beautiful music but too short. Could post the long four version of full song ?❤
Found this while trying to find the name of a song my mother used to sing. And this is it! Sigh.
This video described the 35th Regiment of vote as a regiment raised in Ireland and formed of Irish men who have spent most of their life enforcing British rule in their own country. But this regiment was raised in Belfast amongst overwhelmingly Protestant folk who were the decendents of the Scottish and English folk who colonised parts of Ireland particularly wat is now Northern Ireland . They probably would have seen themselves as British as well as Irish and would have no more qualms in enforcing British rule in Ireland then people from the British mainland would have done .
Delightful…priceless work…
World premiere 12. October 2024 in Saarbrücken!!!
Very confused use of 'English' and 'British' exhibited here. It's become the norm unfortunately.
I come from the Fraser clan. Its interesting to know possibly an ancestor of mine changed the course of history forever.
Gustav Holst....a real genius. Since I ve heard the first piece, it was op.37 .....admire his music, magical scores ❤❤❤
I'm sorry I simply couldn't make it all the way to the end without stopping to grieve the omission of at least a mention of The Cloud Messenger, which our choir performed as a west coast premiere 2 years ago. We found it glorious to sing as a spiritual piece, since as a choir the words are often paramount.
This and Nimrod are ❤❤
I think the first time I ever heard this was in animated short called Cosmic Cartoons (an alternate version), and then later in the film The Man Who Fell to Earth. Neptune is my favourite of the suites.
When people say music brings them to tears, I sometimes think they're being a bit hyperbolic, but with this section in Holst's Jupiter, I genuinely have to fight back the tears. There's nothing else like it.
This or Jerusalem should absolutely be the British national anthem.
Personally would take 10bpm off
Very similar to I vow to thee my country and Jerusalem the Golden.
That is what Holtz created that from later.
Clearly made by anti-British lefties. Frenchified friends of Trudeau
One of my ancestors, by the name of Pierre Durand, likely took part in this fight. He would have been in the militia coming from everywhere in the colony!
Brilliant documentary about one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. Thank you. I loved hearing first hand memories of his daughter, his students, and his collogues. The anthem from the middle of Jupiter still grabs my soul.
To have Holst`s daughter as conductor, must been incredible emotional.....
one of the great pieces of music ecer
Sharpe! "O'er the hills and o'er the main. Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain. King George commands and we obey. Over the hills and far away!"
Thank you for posting this! I was not aware that this had been released. I love Roderick Williams' voice.
I cry every time. playing this at my Dad's funeral
The British soldier back in thosecdays had to be in full uniform at all.times when he was outside
this song made me spend 2000 dollars💀
liberal government propaganda, more lies than truth
Holst, one of the greatest composers 🎵🎶🎼
My 7th grandfather Charles Grim of Winchester Virginia under General Wolfe was a pow at the battle of Quebec at 23 years old. He later got freed and ended up being very close friends with Daniel Morgan and drinking buddies. Charles grim was one of Daniel Morgan’s Dutch mess, closest confidants and part of Daniel’s elite sharpshooters
This is exactly how it should sound.
The Royal Irish and Royal Highlanders were proud to serve the Crown, this is such new age Liberal tripe about the Irish and Highlanders being anti British. Both the Highlanders and Royal Irish were Protestant and pro British. The French were weak, untrained cannon fodder. Their great, great grandchildren pollute the modern Canadian Armed Forces with the same weakness and cowardice.
Im one of the oldest students in high school band class, so my band director lets me conduct sometimes. We are playing an arrangement of this piece in class, and he let me conduct it once. I was in heaven. Didnt drop my smile the whole time.
This song used to play in the roblox game solar system exploration 2, every time I hear it I feel like nibiru is on its way to destroy earth, so terrifying but peaceful.
The original documentary is not avaible anymore, what a shame... 😢
Rugby World Cup 2007 and 2011 comes to mind big time
Very interesting
Brutal, I like it.
I saw Holst's tomb when I go to England I will visit Claudevan melo.
Matpat leaving RUclips be like:
played this in 7th grade orchestra, usually called "Jupiter" and is part of an arrangement with about 7 songs called the "Planets". Every song is just as good and I recommend listening to all of them!
This gives me Dreamworks Intro vibes ngl, either way love this a lot
I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.
