Effort is ulitmately - in some sense- a measurement of how difficult something is to us, subjectively. Thinking of stuff now as difficult or unhappy or unlikely to change is usually because we saturate NOW with anxieties and worriess about what is might happen in the future or how has it been until now. So, how i understand this, especially the Zen saying at the end, is that the naive man sees a mountain as THE MOUNTAIN, something that is a huge challenge. Mountains are most often symbols of something unachievable. Water are similar in a way, they oftens symbolize hurdles (as in "crossing the river or sea") or self-development/change. No matter if those are our dream/ambitions/career, naive guy always percieves them as something difficult, sth that needs a lot of EFFORT. Intermediate, someone who started thinking a lot about spirituality, life and all that stuff might think of them as mere constructs of imagination. All in all, majority of things we think of as difficult, are percieved that certain way, mainly because someone told us that, not because we experienced it. Who knows, maybe what we think of as "our" hopes/dreams are something instilled by others anyway? Thus there are neaither mountains nor waters, which results in "no effort". A wise guy realizes the direction in which he wants to go or rather in which direction he is driven. He sees mountains, but for him those are "just" mountains. A pile of dirt nothing more. Bodies of water are just puddles, big or small. He just casually continues on his way "effortlessly" climbing the mountain, and continuing on his way, probably onto the next mountain, who knows... In the end there is no need to be fixated on just one, because they are just "piles of dirt". Plz don't respond if you have nothing to say. I wrote this comment mainly for myself, so i remember my own thoughts.
