Swift Power Crane: Wingspan Board Game Strategy & Gameplay
Wouldn't it be better to overpay and play the wood duck turn 1 instead of grabbing a seed? You lose 1 (random) food that way but you gain one extra activation of the wood duck, I would always value draw 2 discard 1 over 1 random food. Especially with no cards in hand and aiming to build a forest engine (which will produce plenty of food)
Think i would have tried emu with avocet. Cant stand migratory birds
That error was indeed devastating. You lost 2 nectar points in grassland (got 3 instead of 5), you had to discard a lot of food and cards to lay 4 eggs - could have played them instead, like that pink card.
Hey, Looking to get into the league. How do I go about that? Thanks!
Hey! The league was organized by the Wingspan Tournament Discord Server. It's nearly finished now, but new tournaments are held every few weeks!
You could've gained 5 eggs by activating white throat after playing last 2 birds to fill wetlands
what a dream of a draw. Nicely played
was your opponent an NPC?
No, this tournament game is against a human.
Well played. I'm surprised that you risked losing the last end of round goal(?!) Play the eagle on the last turn. Save the food for end of round. After that, there's complete freedom in wasting any food through the Mannikin double play.
Valid point.
also psa (princes steph's astrapia) is very very good
wow nice my high score in wing span is 147
your opponent never had an opportunity to draw the maned duck as they had already completed their last turn of the round, so you played that correctly.
Good game! I think not picking up a 9 point passerine bird which also gives you a food for the dove was a mistake (the oriole). Really annoying with the dove bug! I hope they get that fixed. Playing the goldeneye in round 4 would also have been good as it would have tied the end round goal and provided you with 3 points more for the cheap birds bonus cards. It would have a saved a food for the dove as it was only 2 food and you could have used one of the eggs for the bird played with the mannikin. Keep up the good content though and good luck in your next game!
Thanks for watching!
Another small mistake I noticed was that you discarded food for an extra egg on your last grassland activation when you could have discarded an extra card instead. That would have saved a food for the Eurasian Collared-Dove.
Bummer that the dove bugged. I've also had that happen a few times. There's even a meme about it on the tournament server. I think the biggest thing that hurt you in this game is turn efficiency. One example was laying eggs before playing the dove. It also seemed like you gained food a lot. I think the nectar battle is important but just like bonus cards there's a ceiling to how important it is. It doesn't matter if you win the nectar race by 1 or 15 you still get the same 3 extra points.
The Dove and Yellowhammer by their very nature are food intensive birds. Gaining a lot of food is kind of part and parcel for using them effectively. I may have "overdrawn" nectar but that's just a consequence of it being available at the time food was being gained, not going out of my way to get nectar when I couldn't use it. At the end of every round I was looking to play a bird and tuck 5 food on the dove. That requires a lot of food. Every piece of food I gained this game was used so it doesn't seem like a waste to me. About action efficiency, there was a moment where I was looking at playing the Black Tern and not the Dove by the end of round 1. I laid the eggs in prep for that but ended up going with the Dove instead. There are always adjustments being made during gameplay, as I'm sure you know, and everything I'm thinking doesn't always make it into the video. Its kind of a balancing act for me providing commentary as well as focusing on the game.
Hey, always appreciate the videos you post here! I think this game was winnable for you and a few things I noticed: - Oriole was too good to pass in the first round. Works well for 2 and 4 EoR and applies to bonus card. - I would refrain from discarding any food with ECD in the first two rounds. Food is typically worth 2 points and ECD should be used at end with large forest engines - Round 2, you needed to draw instead of getting food again. Rufous Owl became very expendable once opponent plays Golden Oriole - On your last few turns, if you play Manikin, then Goldeneye with YH, then Longspur, that's net 5 more points by tying EoR and saving food for dove
Explain how you'd close the 13 point gap.
@@Wingsplain I have watched a lot of your games and a lot of the time, including this one, you are too focused on scoring points early rather than setting up better habitats. You also can be overly focused on a bird/engine and miss a better pivot that comes up in the tray. Your opponent had a wood duck, so it was going to be an uphill battle, but the game could’ve been won.
Thanks for watching as always. You're stating theory and opinions here and that's fine. But trying to criticize me by saying "you should have won but IDK how" doesn't seem very productive to me.
@@Wingsplain I’ll start at end of R1, since passing on Oriole and BS Kite changes entire game. 2-6 - Should draw cards and take Cockatoo and Diver. Both are good points/food and cockatoo for 2 EoR goals. When your board struggles with eggs, getting the third GL bird is important so you can generate 4 eggs by discarding food, which you have plenty. By the end of Round 2, you could’ve had yellowhammer, Cockatoo in GL, and Diver all down, which likely would’ve won you the EoR 3-2 - Play the eagle here, there are 3 fish in the feeder 3-1 Lays Egg (4) > YH play Mannikin Round 4 - Cards/food/Painted Bunting/Eggs/Eggs > Goldeneye > Ibis with Manikin EoR +12 (net to opponent) / Bonus cards = -3 / Eggs +9 / Birds -2 / Nectar likely unchanged That is only one less gain food actions which is 4-5 less food gained, plus 2 for eagle, plus 1 for end of 1st turn order and 1 for 2nd round bug, plus 1 for less food of Cockatoo vs Owl, less 1 for an egg. That’s 15 points gained from simple changes.
I Probably won't be able to review this in detail until Friday so I will get back to you. Three things that stand out to me right now: 1: Why do you advocate for BS Kite in R1? Its not generally a good card and it doesn't have any type of synergy with the current game state. 2: You state that I "likey would've won" the R2 goal. Did you prove your method or are you guessing? 3: During your calculations, did you account for subtracting the points away from my score for the actions I did take instead of just adding the points for your changes on top of my existing score?
At the end of round 2 there is a bug that occurs that prevents the Dove from taking the food. I've seen that several other people have reported this bug and the common thread between all of the occurrences are Teal PAB birds. So the bug seems to have occurred in this instance due to the Yellowhammer.
Exactly! Thanks for the reminder.
That might be the worst opening hand I've ever seen 😅
That's been happening to me a lot lately!
Round 1 laying eggs and moving swift to fpreat to gain food vs drawing cards to dc seems the more efficient play.
This is an interesting take. I can never have enough cards especially in the beginning to utilize this card to its full potential. I always prefer the different tucking pink birds but I will take another look at this. Thank you!
Well played! A nail biter. I love that you took your time on every decision.
Thanks for watching Rex!
I think discarding food for eggs would have allowed for more early game nectar access with crow. I too wish you played canvasback early. I wonder what your thoughts on playing starling into GL. I find it's such a powerful bird to ensure nectar battle wins.
My thought exactly. It was a mini conversion engine: "Any Food -> Egg -> Any Food (Nectar)".
I didn't think of that Crow usage at the time. I'll have to remember that for the future. I like the Starling as well but I didn't think I would have enough food laying around to make good use of it. Using food for playing birds is better than giving it to the Starling.
Could you do a short video on how to enter the tournaments? 🙏🏼
The entry for this tournament is closed but there will always be more tournaments in the future. The first step is to join the Wingspan Tournaments discord here: discord.gg/wingspantournaments
@@Wingsplain - that I did. Still, it seems a bit overwhelming to locate the pending tournaments.
@@deras4They send out announcements on Discord when a new one begins.
Haha. It’s definitely interactive for me to watch one of your games. I kept saying “play the canvasback, play the canvasback!” to my screen. Your early card access being so weak, and with omni, it just seemed like a good play. Yes you’d be giving card to Tay when you activated it, but he already had good card access while you didn’t, so I think on balance you would have benefited more from the extra card. But it all worked out great in the end. It was very cool to see you figure out that waiting as long as possible to play your last nectar meant you could win all the nectar battles - that late nectar play with Moltoni’s/Yellowhammer is a big tactical advantage. Awesome game! Thanks for sharing it.
can someone point me to information about how these tournaments are organized? Is it all YT creators?
They are organized through the Wingspan Tournaments discord. Check this link: discord.gg/wingspantournaments
@@Frank_Jones314 Yes, anyone can sign up!
Is it using oceania pack?
Yes.
That end of round 3 was rough to watch. I made the same mistake with Moltoni's in a game not too long ago, so I know how easy it is to get tunnel vision and overlook a key resource. Hard to say how things would have played out, but I agree with the other commenter that it was a big point swing, since you basically lost a chance to make that huge Say's Phoebe play during round 3. And you would surely have had something to play after round 4, because you wouldn't have tucked all your excess cards in the wetland the way you did here. So I think it would have at least been close. But I'm 2 and 4 so far in MLW games, so it's not like I'm in any position to judge. Thanks, as always, for sharing such interesting games and commentary. I always learn something.
Right on, good luck in the rest of your matches. I probably wont be able to get more in until Friday. Thanks for watching!
Hey thanks for the video always. You could have won the third round if you laid eggs in the last turn instead of playing spoonbill and played phoebe for wabler's extra turn. Then, you would have the maximum of 8 eggs in forest. That's 6 points swing plus 3 points you lost in third round due to no egg in round goal (total of 9 points different) plus being able to utilize wabler's extra turn, saving you a turn to play a spoonbill in the fourth round. So, 9 points + 4 eggs you laid instead of playing spoonbill = 13 points swing. You could have won the game.
Good call, I didn't see that line.
@@Wingsplain Still enjoyed this video very much. I love how you always creatively play and use the cards other players undervalue and miss.
Man watching you play that spoonbill was gut wrentch. Mistakes can happen though tough to see.
Yeah despite the R3 choke I think I had a great game. Mistletoebird got in there and put in a bit of work which was a nice feeling.
@maudlincake Yeah it's been a while since I made a mistake that bad. Just got to move on and get over it which is easier said than done when you're putting it out there for everyone to see.
With Rainbow Lorikeet, it seemed like 'discarding' your spent Nectar was actually increasing your count? Is that how it should actually work or is that a bug?
This is how it should work, it's a key feature of the Lorikeet's power. The power says discard the nectar to the spent nectar space for your forest. navarog.github.io/wingsearch/card/328
@@Wingsplain Thanks so much. I've been playing it as 'discard one of your spent nectar' so your grasslands spent nectar becomes a resource you can use up.
@@magicmerl7749 I see. Yeah that's incorrect. Once a nectar is spent and on the "spent nectar" space it can't be used for anything else. This isn't just with the Lorikeet, this applies to all nectar. Pages 2 and 3 of the OE rulebook cover nectar rules. Here's a link to Stonemaier's free rulebook: www.dropbox.com/sh/f2tekc23yvb27w3/AAA9VyMC7zA5pSez7Syvs9mGa/Wingspan/Oceania%20Expansion?dl=0&preview=WS_OE_Rulebook_r9.pdf&subfolder_nav_tracking=1
Mi highest score of the base game is only 132 ^^ But I only play 5 player games.
You played very well here ;-)
Thanks!
I can't with habitat view. Otherwise, fun and informative game. Thanks for sharing it.
I like how you’re reflecting back on the game acknowledging your mistakes and figuring out what you could have done better. Sometimes i watch other content creators in frustration because they don’t do that xD Btw that butcherbird is an absolute MVP :o
Why don’t you look at your opponents board more often and talk about their plays? Confusing to follow the full game without it.
There's a lot of that in my videos. This one might have been lighter on that for your tastes but a lot of that has to do with what they have going on and if it's even worth talking about. I've actually been criticized for focusing on opponents too much. One video in particular I can recommend is Gull Crest Masterclass, where my opponent is the star of the show: ruclips.net/video/t4Utzh0EHNk/видео.html
I'll also add that tomorrow's video should have more focus on my opponent so be sure to catch it.
@@Wingsplain fair enough, tough balance to strike for sure. I've only caught a few of your videos, thanks for the content :)
Did you consider taking a card draw turn at some point with the kelp gull? It might have been a nice way to see a lot of birds.
Good point, I didn't actually think of that as a food dump. In reality though, I had cards that I wanted to play, so I was never tempted to dig beyond what Wood Duck could provide. If I was getting desperate for a large volume of cards I probably would have pursued that option.
Didn’t make a difference but Bird Feeder would have been 1 more point than Rodentologist because Cockatoo was 5th wheat eating bird.
Came here to say the same thing 😊
Good catch.
This one must be in my asmr-video lists. Such a great unboxing, thank you 😍😊
Any consideration to play the yellow rumped warbler that you threw in round 1? Would have been better than petrel for round 1 goal. Also gives more card cycle in forest, more points etc. Surprised you just chucked it tbh.
I briefly considered it at 5:28. I disagree that the Warbler was better than the Petrel for the R1 goal. Thanks to its star nest, Petrel was an immediate net 6 point play that worked toward the round goal, my bonus card, and it delivered 3 nectar to the Wetlands. The Warbler was a net zero-point play that only works toward the round goal. Looking at long term potential, I had a lot of good cards in my hand all game and I would not want to tuck them for the points, as this would only put me at great risk of *reducing* my card quality with each tuck. I would have likely skipped the Warbler's power on several occasions putting it far behind the instant scoring power of the Petrel. The warbler would need to tuck 7 cards before it outscored the Petrel (ignoring bonus cards). I played nearly every card I drew in this game, with the occasional unhelpful card being discarded for critical extra food or eggs. With regard to card drawing potential, two activations of the Petrel Wetlands results in 12 cards seen and 6 cards kept. The previously mentioned 7 tuck Warbler would lose 7 cards to draw 7 cards. To my eyes, all the math supports the Petrel play.
I dont think the warbler can be used for the EOR at that point at all, it's too late
He’s back! 👏
Yep! Don't miss the other games I've recently posted.
Personally would have gone Ethologist over Nestbox builder atr the beginning, much easier to score 4 points, you would have gotten 6 in your wetland at game end without even aiming for it game. Wouldn't have made a difference in the end. Always interesting comparing the decision I expect someone to make versus what they actually make. GG's
Great video. I love me some wingspan
Thanks. Welcome to the channel.
Round 2 u shouldn't refresh the tray for wagtail cause even bad cards turn into points with gracle
Why not hold onto the European goldfinch in starting hand?
Its kind of a gamble to keep a card like that when you don't know what your opponent is going to attempt. Especially when there isn't even any bonus card or round goal synergy.
And thanks for being subbed for 9 months!
I was surprised that neither of you took and played the astrapia round 1. It’s such a strong starter bird on oceania boards. Congrats on the win, but it would have been really interesting to me to see what would have happened if you’d grabbed the astrapia on turn 1 (possibly throwing a nectar to deny the raven), play it in the forest, and go to town. I find myself actively avoiding grassland engines these days unless they’re super powerful, and this game is a good example of why: even with fantastic birds the final point total was fairly low (by oceania standards).
Both of us had a strong incentive to develop into the Grasslands which solves our individual egg problems. Leveraging the Astrapia means you are helping your opponent lay eggs as well which can be a pretty dangerous prospect in this meta. Usually, I want my opponent to have birds like Astrapia because it puts the burden of sharing resources on them. I'll keep you and the Astrapia in mind the next time I see it.
I'll also add a reminder that we are playing with the Tournament Discord's house rules that Power 4 can't be played until round 2. I likely would have had a higher score if I had played the Raven right away.
May i ask what platform you play this on? I want to get better to beat a friend that is really into this game.
I play on Steam. You can get it on various other platforms as well.
That is such a painful loss on one mistake 😭 you still played really well I was not expecting a close game with how they dominated the goals and nectar
Thanks. Yeah, sometimes your opponent just has "the nuts", just like in Poker.
@@Wingsplain At the 2nd to last turn of R2, I think it would have been better if you just played White Stork then drew cards on last turn you would have been able to have 5 Birds w/o eggs. This also would've enabled you to get 2 eggs with Pileated next forest activation.
