Alien is indeed a fantastic horror-sci-fi movie. And, as you said, if it were a one-off project with no sequels, it would still be a classic all by itself. Congratulations on completing your month-long video marathon! You have a lot more RUclips energy than I have!! Happy Hallowmas!
Great commentary, Ian! I remember you saying how much you love this film. When I saw it in the theater on its initial release, I was blown away by it. Everything about it: the atmosphere, the story, those creepy woods, the performances, etc. When I watched it a second time on DVD just a few years ago, I liked it a little bit less. But it's still a brilliantly made horror film, and totally original. The language was, and still is, a problem for me. And my DVD copy doesn't offer subtitles. It doesn't help that the actors speak so softly and quietly. I'll watch this one again for sure. As for camping in the woods, I used to do it quite a bit when I was a kid, and always loved it. But I haven't done it for decades. I wouldn't mind doing it again, but I would probably rent a nice secure cabin instead of sleeping in a tent in a sleeping bag. I don't want to be quite that rustic at my age.
Mutated cannibals? Sounds like some of my relatives. The ones we only whisper about. This film has 7 or 8 sequels? How is it possible I never heard of any of these movies? Where have I been? Where am I right now???
This is indeed a great film, and one of the best of all the Hammers. Christopher Lee is completely different from Mr. Lugosi, but he makes the character his own. He was also good in the sequels, even though he was kind of dragged back into the role, kicking and screaming! I love Brides of Dracula and Kiss of the Vampire. They're my two favorites of all the Hammer horrors. But Horror of Dracula is very close to the top.
Dracula 🦇 is Christopher lee 👌🏻 but i watched Dracula 1979 the other day and it was so entertaining 👍🏻 frank langella Laurence Olivier Donald pleasance, have you seen it?
@@forkerball3988 When you say "crazy", do you mean I have a wacky, off-the-wall sense of humor? Or do you mean that I'm very likely to pull out a machete and start slashing people on the street? (Spoiler alert: I'm a combination of both.)
This is one of the biggest disappointments in the long history of horror films. To have Lee, Karloff and Steele in the same film and not have Steele interacting with either of the two horror legends was a huge blunder. Lee and Steele had wanted to work together in the 1960s and were unable to find the right vehicle. I think they both signed for this project without even seeing the script and were both disappointed with it. Lee and Karloff had worked together before. The story itself is disappointing. It has all sorts of possibilities but ends up not making much sense and also not creating any sense of horror or even mystery. I've never read the H.P. Lovecraft story the script is loosely based on (Dreams in the Witch House), but my understanding is they changed it so much that it was almost unconnected to Lovecraft's vision. Barbara's makeup does look blue, but it's supposed to be green, believe it or not! Alternate title: The Crimson Cult. It sounds like they use Barbara's real voice for a change. You're right about Lee's character being less interesting than Karloff's. That's one reason why the conclusion (Lee's character actually being the reincarnation of the witch) is so unbelievable. The movie is colorful and had so many possibilities. I do rewatch it occasionally.
I saw this in the theater when it first came out and found it to be overdone and very disappointing. Too bad, because, as you said, they had great sets and good actors to work with. Lili Taylor is a very unique and talented actress. The original is 1,000 times better than this.
@@forkerball3988 The only one I can think of is the 1977 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Donald Sutherland. Maybe not better, but excellent in every possible way.
Sounds like a dismal failure and a big waste of time. Considering the story, it seems like a good director could have made something exciting out of it. I never heard of this one either.
Your seagull experiences are quite fascinating. Is it possible that you've been living in the midst of an Alfred Hitchcock movie your entire life? We don't have seagulls here where I live. Just sparrows and robins. I always loved this crazy movie and still do.
