Misty by Erroll Garner Piano Solo
Recently I’ve passed my audition for the Marine Corps music enlistment option program (MEOP). I thought I’d share one of the pieces I selected for the audition. This is one of my first Jazz pieces I’ve ever transcribed. Being classically trained, jazz has been one of the most difficult genre of music I’ve studied. After so many trials and errors this is the final results.

Blue Yeti Blackout Edition Unboxing & Piano Test
Просмотров 5 тыс.7 лет назад
I've recently got the Blue Yeti Blackout Edition for future recordings, so I thought I'd test it on this Steinway & Sons grand piano. I'm still fiddling with the settings and placement of the mic so this isn't the best recording. Find me on social media FB: ken.yang.9256 TT: MNCarnivores216 IG: yoyuepain?hl=en

    Which is the best setting? Omni? Stereo? Cardioid?

    • @yuepainyang8602
      @yuepainyang8602 4 года назад

      For the this particular piano and the room it was in, I picked the Stereo setting. I wanted to get the most out of the piano without too much background noises and over. Unfortunately I didn't have a mic stand at the time and so the mic was in a bad spot (On the music desk on the piano, TOO CLOSE to the strings) so the fortissimo's were a bit loud and distorted.

    • @yuepainyang8602
      @yuepainyang8602 4 года назад

      The gain on the mic was set a bit pass the halfway point, can't remember what I had volume on. I kinda wish I had the mic in a better placement at the time, since some of the fortissimo's came in a bit too loud (especially with the cords of the Tchaikovsky Concerto 03:25)

      Gonzalo Corral I recorded the video in Stereo Mode. I tested Uni-directional and Omni-directional prior to recording the video too and settled on Stereo because overall it captured the best sound from the piano.

    Its the voice quality that counts at the end of the day, and I'm sure Digital Pianos can deliver SAME voice quality than acoustic pianos. Unless you have human's ear that have tone hearing ability beyond God himself, then Digital Pianos will be the answer in any comparison.

    i would be interested to hear how the microphone would sound placed in the center with the stereo polar pattern. Excellent performance I especially loved that flight of the bumblebee it was very pianissimo when descending! :D

    • @yuepainyang8602
      @yuepainyang8602 6 лет назад

      When placed near the center the piano had a very “poppy” sound perfect for jazz and pop style music, but I prefer a warm sound and even balance of a beautiful sounding tenor and strong bass!

    It's unfair to compare the sound of a real piano, which has the full spectrum of frequencies, with the digital piano and its limited on-board speakers. Still, for a good comparison, you should use a very good microphone, with an excellent frequency response. The viewers of this video must keep in mind that what they hear has to go through the Yamaha's speakers, the camera's microphone and then their speakers or headphones. Each steps degrades the audio quality. In the case of the piano, you still have the latest two, of course.

      I still wonder what kind of response there'll be had I tested a Yamaha CF6 they had a week later to the P115!

    Are you using separate softwares for the video and the audio? I've been trying to record with a Logitech webcam and the Blue Yeti using the Logitech software. The recording comes out so soft. I've been looking for the solution but haven't found yet. By the way, I like the stereo mode. I think it sounds more realistic.

    • @yuepainyang8602
      @yuepainyang8602 6 лет назад

      Yes, I used Audacity. I've experimented with the different settings, placement and distance of the mic from the piano. On the Logitech software, did you select Blue Yeti as the default mic?

    • @ji94552

      Yes, the mic was set to use the Yeti. It's still too soft. Which video editing software do you use?

    Play the p115 through a pair of B&W 703 speakers and a quality amp and it will sound as good or better than the grand.

    Great comparison. I'm thinking of buying a P-115 (or a CLP-545). Can you tell me if the AUX outputs (mono phone) are balanced outputs or unbalanced? I already have 2 Yamaha MSP7 studio monitors ( usa.yamaha.com/products/proaudio/speakers/msp_studio_series/ ). My thought is that if I could attach a keyboard style piano like the P-115 with a balanced signal to my studio monitors (to avoid bus/hum/noise/interference), I would get an evenly rich or probably even richer sound in comparison to a CLP-545 without the extra MSP7 studio monitors.

    • @yuepainyang8602
      @yuepainyang8602 7 лет назад

      Reinout Van Vlaenderen I'm not completely sure if the P115 AUX output is balanced or unbalanced. But I'm currently using a Unbalanced 1/4" TRS cord using both of the outputs (R & L-L+R) for recording.

    Great comparison, I'm glad you switched back/forth. I actually prefer the C5X (by a tiny margin), but amazed how good the P115 sounds for such a 'cheap' piano. How would you compare the two? How is the volume that the Yamaha puts out, especially in the lower registers with the 2x7w speakers? Thanks :)

    • @yuepainyang8602
      @yuepainyang8602 8 лет назад

      BROis Thanks for the comment! :D To be honest the P115 has a great sound, but it doesn't have the resonance and touch of a acoustic piano(around 1:26 - 1:40 if you listen carefully to the low melodic intervals in the left hand section the transition from C5X to P115 you'll hear how the sound on the P115 diminishes more quickly). But other than that, it's a amazing piano for the price. The sound on the P115 (I find) varies depending on a room's acoustics. The piano has a fairly warm and clear sound and a relatively strong bass, but with my piano the left speaker is actually right up against a (45 degree angle) corner, the sound is reverberating off that corner which produces a clearer sound and this HUGE bass. But again, the sound varies depending on a room's acoustics. Hopes this answers your question :D

    • @brois841
      @brois841 8 лет назад

      That makes sense. The P115 is built for portability and thus has pretty tiny speakers/amp. The fact that it's as good as it is, is impressive. Can only imagine how this comparison would work with a YDP/CLP range of digital pianos. Thanks again :)
