      Haha thanks bro! I don't believe I was using any sort of filter on this one. I could be mistaken tho. I did shoot this a year ago so I don't remember exactly. Looking back at it tho I definitely pulled my highlights way back so that contrast is not super strong over all. That could be whats making it look soft.

    If you lower the light output, will the 1/4 grid give the same result as the full grid. Secondly, if one has a lower light watt like 200x, the 1/4 should be equal to a 600w full grid. Am I right?

      Output wise, yes. But how soft the light is, no. But that’s exactly how to think about this stuff. If you only have a 200w then you have to think of how you can make it work

    Amazing video man! Love your honesty and simplicity when breaking down everything. I usually use the soft frost on sunny exteriors where you don’t want to over soften sunlight but keep the hard quality with a soft touch of diffusion. With the sun there’s no proximity to the source so no hotspot is created and you get a smoother result. Love your work man! 🙌🏼🔥

      @ yeah I definitely need to get used to renting stuff, I like to have like a base of things that are owned, that way if I need more I could rent. I’ve always been that way with lenses. I definitely need to be like that more with everything

      @@joshmillerdp honestly , just bounce. Bounced light is my favorite, because to me, it just makes sense. It's what happens in real life most of the time in my experience on earth. Like the sun hitting walls or something

    I was a dancer in a mega budget movie earlier this year and they almost solely used soft frost for diffusion! I feel at moments they used highlight for closeups on the female star. Pretty cool!

    I work at a rental house and the Grids and Silk are the ones most everyone rents. Grid cloth (Full, Half and Quarter) is always a decent place to start diffusing units. Everything else is relative to your needs/shot. Love this video! -Didn't see this one covered: Inbetween Full Silk and 1/4 Silk is China Silk which is 1 Stop light loss.

      Depends on the scene but go top three for me are magic cloth, silent full grid 1/4 silent grid!

      @ it’s definitely powerful enough there will definitely be limitations. You won’t be able to get it back as far or far from your talent. I actually should make a video showing how different situations require or don’t require like a 300 or 600 light!

    "Dark & Moody" is my go to straight out the gate regardless of the pitch 😅, really struggle with that soft clean look without overexposing the shit out of the frame. Super helpful tips my dude 🤘🏻

      I feel that bro! I definitely gravitate towards that right out of the gate but have to dial it back if that’s not the vibe haha I’d definitely recommend using the EL zone you can get those ratios right without actually over exposing the image!

      @@pauldodd5332 The app Monitor+ has EL zones and costs about 20 dollars. I use it all the time with my A7s3's when checking exposure. The benefit is that it's wireless so you can walk around with your phone and tablet and adjust stuff. I'm a one-man band, so it's super usefull.

    Great video, man. What's the best light to inexpensively light houses through trees and cast a moon light color temp from a far distance? I know that's usually an expensive light, but just wanted to see if you suggested an option I havent thought of.

      Hey thank you bro I appreciate that! So I would say your best bet would be to rent something rather then buy. Like at my rental house you can rent a 1200d for $95 a day. Or like a HMI light like a Joker 800w for $20 a day. Where are you located?

    Instead of a bounce board... Would u recommend using a checkerboard reflector???

      Totally depends. I probably wouldn’t use something that has a reflector element just cause it can be a really hard light. I’d recommend a a checkered bounce that has like white and tan colors that gives a nice mix of warm and cool light. Or look up bluff bounce. It’s a new thing that will blow your mind!
