Leafhopper spreads Brochosomes All Over Its Body
An interesting fact about these flies is that they have the fastest reaction speed in the animal kingdom. They can perceive threats in about 5 milliseconds.
We have started getting these around our house in NC. They are so beautiful. They are usually gone by this time of year (November), but this year (2024), there is one that is still hanging in there. It is dropping to below freezing at night and we'll check on her in the morning and she'll just be hanging there. She will appear dead, just dangling, but a few hours later, she'll be awake. Last night in got down into the 20s, so we'll see if she survived. She did leave a fairly large egg sac, so we'll at least get to see some of her offspring next year. Thank you for the great video.
Unfortunately, last night was just too cold for poor Charlotte. I went out at lunchtime today and she was curled up on the window ledge. It was sad to see her like that, knowing how large and graceful she was. She destroyed a lot of insect pests for us and hopefully her little babies will do the same next year. We'll sure miss her.
I didn't know I'd need this video but I did 😅 thanks for the help
...treasures can be found in the moss with stereo and compound microscope🤓🤠...
Awesome shirt
Great video
The base of feeders that are metal rust. What is the most decorative glass feeder with a plastic bottom?
Strange clam activity indeed.
Looks like good fishing bait
What about a full turtle shell. Would you recommend dipping?
If you’d like to do it that way too that should be fine, make sure everything is clean and any loose scutes are glued down first*
@@Whacked-Out-Nature ok thank you so much
Awesome video! Has anyone ever told you that you have a radio voice?
No but Thank you! lol “Testing.. Testing.. Mic check 1-2 1-2 Sibilance Sibilance "
Did it hurt???
Removing the stitches didn’t hurt, it was more like a weird tickling sensation
did you know they have eyes on the tip of every arm? :D
I spent a lot of time in the woods as a kid but didn't really care to learn much at the time. Now that I'm older, I'm really starting to appreciate it. These galls are something I saw a lot as a kid and always wondered "I wonder what the heck causes that?" before forgetting 10 seconds later. I always assumed they were some kind of fungal growth.
Thanks for the amazingly informative video.
Questions: I have shell 8" long looks to be a wood turtle maybe box turtle but she'll is more flattened out anyway when it came into my hands it was faded maybe sun bleached out anx dry I had it stored with stuff I shed roof caved in everything soaked it'd been out of wetness for about few weeks or so and seems dry I want to lacquer ( since that's what I have on hand ) but the big shell scales are loose one xamd off altogether and not as attractive with out but yij can tap on others and hear they are detached in the center will a good coat of lacquer glue this down ? Should I bake it I oven low temp to assure all moisture is out before I spray
Oven isn’t really needed, A wet shell can dry out in 24 hours. Now that the shell is dry again I would simply glue the scutes down to keep them in place. Let the glue dry for 1 day and if they look good on the shell and doesn’t need a touch up- Then Lacquer it. Give it 3 or 4 coats and you’ll be good to go*
With bones if you want to clean them off collect potato bugs or called pill bugs some roll up in a ball some are more flattened but they will clean bones better than ants
Lol, I read the title and had to check it out!
Looks like a anacondas head.
Want to go with you
that wasnt a young burnt-orange bolete, it had a ring and a thin stem.
I will update* Thank you
wow amazing
The hummingbird that hangs around my zinnias is black and dark blue. The wings don't look clear. Flies very fast.

Looks like coreopsis growing with it.
I love mushrooms but I don’t know enough about the different species to hunt them on my own not worth the risk
“Not worth the risk”. I Agree * To the point where you remind me of exactly what I said long ago.. Then I stumbled upon Chicken of the Woods* Laetiporus sulphureus in a deciduous forest... It is unmistakable and DELICIOUS! Since nothing else looks like it, it was an easy decision. Then I told myself that’s the only kind I will trust from here on out. "I don’t know enough about the different species to hunt them on my own not worth the risk” Then I started seeing Chanterelles everywhere. And when you realize, they have many qualities that EASILY set them apart from the rest, there’s no big decision to be made. Instead of being fearful, be mindful. Check out some of the other videos here on the channel, they will help you, as well as the growing community here will help guide you, they are super friendly. I rarely get “hate-watchers” here. In conclusion, You dont have to eat or pick anything, just taking pictures is enough <3 Thank you! Cheers!
Very cool find!
in the U.S.? Wonderful!
Cool stuff! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure! Thx for the kind words!
what state are you in?
NC
Many species of flies are actually beneficial and they outnumber the bad ones. Hoverfly for example is a favorite insect of many, as they control pest and pollinate at the same time! ( plus they are pretty). Black Soldier flies may not be a glamorous pollinator or a valiant predator but they are an excellent recycler, turning the world's food waste into useful fertilizers and protein for livestocks
I’ve tried to get some Hoverfly footage very recently twice and both times they flew right off even while I was moving extremely slow. They’re very apprehensive
I got stung on the shoulder by one on a crape myrtle tree, it was pretty bad. I've also been stung multiple times by a saddle back caterpillar, they don't feel good either.
yikes, I still haven’t seen a saddle back caterpillar in person.. Keeping an eye out=
0:56 Looks like Trump's hair is looking for a new home...
One stung me when I was 10 I took a dose of Benadryl and put calamine lotion on it and went BK out ta play
Nah bruh
I got stung by one as a kid climbing a tree. It got me on my pinky finger. The pain radiated up to my shoulder. And it didn't start to go away for like 4 hours. Was over 6 hours before it went away enough for me to fall asleep. After that I always watched where I put my hand while climbing trees.
Wasp and Bee sting pain stops immediately and the swelling goes down in minutes when you put vinegar on it. I've been told by 3 people vinegar kiils the pain almost immediately.
Wait, so you found out what it was and didn't immediately burn it with a blowtorch?
Bitten by a hornet?
That’s what it felt like* Yes!.... it happened over my left shoulder so I couldn’t see what happened
@@Whacked-Out-Nature lol hornets sting tho. Js
@@KrytoRift I would have preferred the hornet-
Is that an Asp caterpillar?
It sure is!
It's very unusual for any insect to feed from more than one kind of plant, but I've seen sphinx moths feed from various flowers. Also, unusual in that they fly during the day or at dusk instead of nighttime. Like a hybrid of a butterfly & moth.
That poor moth couldn’t find any nectar 😅
Long as it's a fairly clean wound without a bunch of dirt & foreign material I generally do my own stitches.
The nocturnal type love the purple larkspur that grow wild in the purposely “unkept” portion of the yard.
We have them in Bulgaria too.
Used to get them visiting our yard in the evrnings, they are really beautiful! ❤❤❤❤
send me some of that please
