    I powered mine up in 2020 and smoked a resistor, fried the left channel. It was my fathers and hasn't been used in over 20 years. I had it refurbished, picked it up yesterday and it sounds great !

      Hi, Are you confident enough to take it apart? If so the best is to unplug it and unscrew the metal body (few screws on the sides and maybe at the back), then check it inside what is causing the problem, sometimes it’s really needed a bit of cleaning as old grease is drying up and is making it sticky or something inside snapped/wares off. If that’s not going to help best to refer it to service place.

      Hi, Unfortunately you need amplifier and stuff to play it, it can not be used just with the speakers, some of the old stuff is build like combo machines with amp and radio tuner or even cassette player they just need speakers.

    I have the same , don't you find the output level for line out just ok only when set to 10 (max) for a normal line in amp ? But at the same time you need to lower to 5 when using the headphone directly plugget to the phones ? (too loud ?)

    • @FunwithVintageHiFi

    Impressively satisfying. I bought one several years ago for £100 plus about £50 to go and collect it! It has just gone back into use after languishing for some time while I played around with more modern units. The phono amp has failed beyond repair on one channel due to one I.C. that is NLA. With so many excellent outboard phono amps on the market these days, I shall not worry about it.

    • @FunwithVintageHiFi

      Sometimes it need the degreasing as old grease gets hard and that prevents from moving to the position, or just something is dislocated inside, if you know a bit how to take apart and look inside, clue is probably there.

    The disk 1 and Disk 2 inputs were designed for a moving iron vinyl record cartridge and it applies an RIAA equalisation curve to th e signal. That is why the CD was very bassy. The CD player has a "line" out put level and should have been plugged into into Tuner 1 or Tuner 2 inputs. One of tuner inputs has a slide switch on the back panel to change the sensitivity of the input, try switching to the lower sensitivity.

    I do own the smaller 470 PXS, it sounds pretty good, but i would recommend to replace the operational amplifier. The C4570 from NEC is built in, and it's OK, but some other, better OP amps are out there. Changing it to a diferent one will improve the sound. Even the pretty cheap NE5532 sounds better, especially in the highs are smoother.

    • @FunwithVintageHiFi
      @FunwithVintageHiFi Месяц назад

      You might be right but I am a fun of the originality as I think Japanese engineers were pretty clued up what are they doing but if someone is looking for some kind of improvement that it might be there why not but as I mentioned I am not recommending changing anything ;)

    • @legobuildingsrewiew7538
      @legobuildingsrewiew7538 Месяц назад

      Hey man you sound like you know a lot about these amps. Mine has a quiet channel. The problem can sometimes be fixed by increasing volume all the way and then reducing it. But one channel is still quieter. I assume it's either the potentiometer for volume if it has two rails, but I doubt that. Probably is the internal pre amplifier... Do you have a clue?

    • @legobuildingsrewiew7538
      @legobuildingsrewiew7538 Месяц назад

      Also, I don't think it's the volume knob because using the balancer to increase the volume of the quiet channel to the max and waiting a bit makes it work again for some time ( switch back to normal balance after it comes "online")

  • @owlnswan4016
    @owlnswan4016 3 месяца назад

    Yes, but don't use records that are in really good condition in changer mode, if you want them to stay that way (and why wouldn't you). Notice how it slips when each record drops...you can even hear it on the video. That is going to scuff, and it will build up damage over time, along with accidental scuffing in building a stack. Thankfully at least these do not require the overarm to be placed over the records as that is another place to cause damage given most of those make full contact with the record on top (some are just in contact with the label). There were a handful of changer models made by VM that were the gentlest changers ever - they not only excluded the overarm like Technics, but they also stopped the platter from moving while the record was gradually lowered vs dropped, so there was none of the slippage which occurs with even things because the platter is stationary and the record is lowered vs dropped. You're still dealing with potentially scuffing up records in making the stack and taking it apart, along with any warps that may introduce slippage during play, but the player design and mechanism eliminated the other issues. You can watch the best model of these...the 1555...work here: ruclips.net/video/iF5ALj2GyCE/видео.html ...and here (rebranded under Sherwood): ruclips.net/video/Sk_Mrvce6vg/видео.html

    • @FunwithVintageHiFi
      @FunwithVintageHiFi 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment. Of course you do not going to use your precious records on it just in case but to be honest I check this one for that exact reason and I must say that I do not see any particular damage like scuffs and stuff as when is going down is "hitting" sides of the record below if so but I agree that probably using it over and over on some records might get damaged and as you mentioned it is a full contact with record below and in the queue on the top, of course there are a lot of models from different brands that do the changers especially for singles but this one I find it fascinating that Technics did this one.

      @@FunwithVintageHiFi It's certainly among the better changers.

      The good news is that only the raised label and raised outer rim touch when a record drops on a record changer, so there is no absolutely scuffing or scratching of the grooves containing the music. Technics record changers, such as this SL-1650, are great machines that will not in any way damage the grooves on records. But thanks for the links to the Voice of Music and identical Sherwood changers, the Sherwood being from 1971 according to the post, thus predating the first Technics changers. I'd never seen that turntable mech, and even more interesting in that Voice of Music OEM changers were typically used in rather inexpensive console systems.

    you need to put a little sticker on the cassette to get the 4 track playback and recording. it is just a black line on sticking tape to engange the light sensor behind the cassette in the tray very nice machine! simple and functional
