BBC South Today - Stagecoach South Driver Shortages (30/06/22)
After taking on much of the network from Arriva in December 2021, Stagecoach faced a driver shortage as those transferring from Arriva wasn't as high as expected. As a result, route cancellations became frequent for the next year, passengers having to resorting to the operators' Twitter feed. Thankfully the worst is now over (as of writing in January 2025).

C Stock old "VERA" announcements

Much like the Bakerloo's 1972 refurbished tube stock, the C69/77 Stocks on the Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines were retrofitted from 1997 with a Digital Voice Announcer (DVA), whose narrator is known only as VERA (whose voice is unknown). Although intended to be the permanent announcer for these lines, the demeaning voice and odd script of station calls led to it being unpopular w...

Bakerloo line Old "VERA" Announcements

When the 1972 tube stock was refurbished in the 1990s for the Bakerloo line, new automatic announcements were installed, going by the name of VERA. These were in use between 1991 (P.S. actually 1997) and 2001, voiced by an unknown narrator. They were replaced by Emma Clarke after passengers deemed to be too creepy or patronising. VERA was also used on the C69/77 Stock for the Circle, Hammersmit...

This, is three bridges signalling centre . . .
Stagecoach best bus company
I love being able to understand where my train is going
Sounds like the final tape recordings from Lesley Whittle to her mother before she was killed…(R.I.P)
"Calling at all stations to" alludes to fast Bakerloo line trains existing 😄
0:12 now I know why Ongar got plotted
"The next station is Elephant & Castle. Change at Elephant & Castle for Mainline Railways and the Northern Line" lol
C Stock
Bakerloo Line 1972 Tube Stock
Sounds a bit creepy
I always thought VERA sounded rather constipated compared to Emma Clarke lol
Vera was the DVA until 2003 then it was Emma Clarke she was also on the Bakerloo line until 2001 never heard her on the Victoria line though.
After doing a bit of digging, I don't think VERA was used on the Victoria line at all, instead having Emma Clarke from circa 2000.
@MannyAntipov I'm pretty sure it was from 2001.
shame you missed out on odd journeys like Barking to Tower Hill (then outer rail circle) and you ended up with "This is barking, this is a special service train calling at all stations to Gloucester Road"
Bad news, rollout isn't expected to complete until end of 2026. But at least the 455s are finally on the way out
How did you manage to acquire this composition? I have a few pieces of railway training music already, but this is one I don't have.
For this one, I found the downloadable tracks on an archive site containing most of De Wolfe’s music.
@MannyAntipov Could you possibly point me in the direction of this site? Thanks

My favorite part was when she said "mmmm hmmm im hmmm yhmmm hamama"
That announcement is mumbling.
Hello My name is Martin Squibb,I'm a Regional Instructor based in Waterloo and this is-
“Inside the cabinet we will find the Passenger Communication Isolating Cock…”
Where… how… did you find this?!?????
It was on the Soho Productions Music website, I uploaded it here since it’s easier to search than on there
So weird
I prefer this to the modern ones.
I don’t like the new name south western railway gave these trains
I remeber the training the exact unit was 321 303/2 PEP im not sure about driving the 32x anymore since they're out of use now
But they might of for me had bad breaking
I seen the training unit before at where all 32x are stored
321303 was the exact unit. As of writing it's now being scrapped at Newport.
I was gonna say that yesterday after i took some knowledge of br in 1989 again bit I forgot to say it after I found out it was that unit sorry just wana say I already remwber now but thanks
Also thst I'm going to leave this video in the background and I have the same video of br trainings Popped up
2:16 it's not like they were actively being used
this one sucks
well done on finding and thanks for sharing!
How on earth dis you find these
This song was on the Soho Productions Music website, but it’s a pain to search for it on there so I uploaded it here.
How on earth did you find this, haha.
The songs were on the Soho Productions Music website, but is a pain to search for so to make it easier I put it here.
How old was the person they got to do these? She sounds about 10 if that
Terrible sound this ann
WHAT THE HECK KIND OF ANNOUNCEMENT IS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????🤬🤬
It sounds like a kid doing it
When will this happen again! I really need to ride these, 455s are my favourite trains and seeing them at my local station would be a dream
Sorry for the late reply, but 455s going to Basingstoke seemed to only happen whenever an ASLEF strike is held. So far this year this happened 3 times, including one time when 5868 (BR blue liveried unit) was on the service! Otherwise you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled because 455s reaching Basingstoke are a very rare occurrence. Hope this helps.
And in 2024, we are getting Adrian Hieatt as our new announcer, as well as PIS displays
And his voice is even worse.
"Ah fucks sake Rob"
“The next station is Charing Cross cha- change here for northern line railways” I can tell they messed up and yet TFL used it somehow I’m glad they got rid of it
She said “mainline railways”
Took that curve just a bit too fast
Lmao
These kinda sound like smth straight out of a horror movie🫠
wait what there were old annoucments for the bakerloo? this sounds so weird and ngl really loud and unclear prefer new one 100%
About the unclear one, that would possibly be the camera quality due to it being taken around the 90s
Interesting I never knew these old announcements existed in the first place. But they sound rather hideous so I can understand why they didn't last long before being replaced by the newer announcements which are sounding much more clear...
C Stock on the Circle, Hammersmith and District (Edgware Road branch)…had the same voiceover from their refurbishment in the early 90s until replaced by Emma Clarke in about 2003. APPARENTLY the Victoria Line 1967 stock had it as well, but I’ve never come across any recordings…I can’t say I remember hearing them as I very rarely used the Victoria Line when I was little!
Useless announcement as we all know that since 1994.
Prphaps the Class 450s and the Class 455s had swapped places like, perhaps the Class 450s were working the Waterloo to Woking and Hampton Court that time
I imagine that it's leftover from in-house testing of the new systems and they chose something that wouldn't ever be "mission critical" yet would equally not be nonsense if it slipped out like this. Alternatively, it could be seen as a test case of taking many tube stations' "thought for the day" from the white noticeboard to the realms of on-train (on-line‽) audio equivalents.
The Ongar branch closed the same day as the Aldwych branch - 30th September 1994. Someone should have lent them the internet.
Must of been doing a special to Ongar and used that announcment
Impossible - Line is blocked
theres buffers in the way
@@axolotlgamer615there isn’t buffers in the way, but the 92’s cannot run down there because the third rail isn’t there
Ahh ok@@MrTransportAddict Thanks for the correction
@@MrTransportAddictthere is a third rail there and 1992 stocks have been tested there but the power on the third ail isn’t enough to run frequent services. Also the line slimmed down to 1 line after Epping which reduced the trains even more. And a lack of users as well. As a result the Epping - Ongar section closed on 30th September 1994 (announcement is wrong). Central line trains terminate at Epping
Adrian Hieatt announcements are so much better than the old ones
They are abysmal.
@@Johnashward212No, they’re much clearer than the old ones.
Sorry no you are wrong. I understood Emma's perfectly clearly and she was famous around the world for them. Adrian is just shouting.
@@yy17782 in the tunnels with the busy and noisy trains, Emma and Sarah were hard to listen to and often people would miss their stops as announcements weren’t too clear. I think change is good for TfL. The “Please…mind the gap….” With the slight pause is good.
@@CranehawkPilotthat’s because the announcements were older
When would this be played? Maybe they are planning to reopen the Ongar line at some point in future?
Yeah but at the moment its preserved as far as i know maybe it was sold to Tfl? i am no expert though as i dont live in london.
@@AaronSingh-b2w TfL no longer owns the line, it was sold in 1998. It looks to still be a heritage line, so I'm not sure if they will actually reopen it. But that's really the only explanation as to why that announcement is in the system.
@@hadrionics2755There is a heritage line that has been running since 2012, the Epping Ongar Railway, and their bit ends some distance short of Epping station. TFL has no plans to extend the line beyond Epping.
@@hadrionics2755 ah alright makes sense i was looking up the info (as im a nerd) but didnt it close on the "30 September 1994"?
@@AaronSingh-b2wit did, so someone who was recording the announcement didn’t do their homework properly!
