[taxonomy:binomial=Riparia riparia] This video was taken shortly after 9 am BST on the 2nd April 2016 in Galloway, Southern Scotland. We are concentrating on the Sand Martin artificial nest hole at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. As interesting as is the actual killing of the Sand Martin is the repeated vicious attacking of the corpse. Of course, we can keep the House Sparrows out of...

Another experiment regarding visitors to the channel. People interested in rare or unusual birds in an area are often not so interested in the less rare ones such as Sand Martins. Having found such a bird on one of his regular walks, our Adviser was amazed to find some disagreement not only about the species but to which Family it belonged, with some very experienced people favouring Curlew. No...

What on earth has the changing of a cultivator engine to do with The Sand Martin Trust? The number of visitors to our channel is important to us, and our Adviser noticed that visitors to Merry Tiller videos far exceeded those to our own Sand Martin ones. Having tried to find a video of just such an engine change, unsuccessfully, he decided that it would be interesting to see how the numbers com...

[taxonomy:binomial=Riparia riparia] The four videos from the RT1 nestcam in 2009 have been used for scenes in our other videos, but this was an interesting year in many respects. It was the second earliest for a hole to be occupied in the colony for a season and it was occupied for the longest time in a season. The female left the first brood, (this is not unusual) or was taken. A female usurpe...

Our method of carrying out essential work during the breeding season at a site that has close public access . The Sand Martins must not be given the impression that humans are a threat as, if so, the colony members will be placed under a state of alarm every time a human is near the site. This can severely disrupt life at the colony at times such as when the birds are settling in or young are b...

With it being so old will it need an A/F Hexagonal wrench key to get the pulley off? UPDATE....I got it off using a 3mm but had to remove the end bit that is bolted onto the centre thread ,(what ever that does but suspect it used to have a reverse action and it was part of that) then I could get at the second grub screw. A bit of leverage from a metal wedge and the pulley came off which has a 3/4 or 19mm hole and about 2 inches or 50mm diameter. As you won't need the handle throttle it's easier to remove it at the handle and then it can stay with the old Briggs and Stratton engine.

i just brought a 5.5 hp from china for my merry tiller the old brigs was just a pain to start good show thanks.the new engine has a bigger footprint i just drilled a new set. i paid 100 dollars for the engine in Australia delivered to my door.my pulley was seized on i cut the shaft of punched it through , the pulley is worth more to me than the old engine.

I notice that most engines come with a 2Omm drive shaft but I think the Merry Tiller Pulley is only 19mm so how will bigger shaft fit into a smaller hole? Or is the pulley hole actually 20mm+ ?

Pr/otected by law in the UK. Are they considered native? By those who matter.

This video intrigues me. This must be a man made structure that appears to be housing nesting sand martins. Here in the United States, we erect and maintain man made houses to attract Purple Martins. Imported house sparrows are a constant treat to our colonies. Trapping and/or shooting them are the only means in which to eradicate them. It is legal to do so in the states as house sparrows are a non native, invasive species. In Scotland, are house sparrows protected by law? Are they considered a native species? We would love to see more videos and learn more about your Sand Martins.

Thanks very much for the interesting (and entertaining) Video, I now am more knowledgeable on engine changing and sand martins. Best of luck with the trust. When i was a youngster, i used to see them near home, making their nests along a sand cliff on the banks of the local river. You just brought back some beautiful memories. Thank You.

I can't find the right bolt size and thread for the q shaft for this engine do you have any ideas what it could be? Mine didn't come with one

I used the bolt from the engine that I replaced. I'm sorry but I don't know the thread size. Seller might. Otherwise can't help.

On the engine used as the replacement it uses a 9/16" - 24UNF-2B TAP in the centre threaded portion. Also the shaft on the replacement engine is a Q shaft, (Parallel shaft), which is 2" and 19/64" or 58.5mm long and approx 19mm diameter up to -0.025 tolerance (just under 3/4 of an inch)

What is the name/number or designation of the engine you use for the replacement?
