    Basically...if you're building a large solar system, get a mppt charge controller. For a small 12v system, get a pwm charge controller and a extra solar panel for better results. Nice video. Brilliant explanation of how both controller work.

      Thanks mate - glad you enjoyed. You're pretty much on it. Even If you have a 12V system and get a higher voltage panel (like 38V) you should use an MPPT. A pwm is best suited to a 12V panel charging a. 12V battery.

    Hi, I live in Liverpool Merseyside England and I use an 80 watt solar panel to charge my car battery without a controller. I use a blocking diode in line to stop discharge into the solar panel at night ok. Because of where in live the solar panel never never puts out much more than 13.5 volts, so great video but you should mention the fact of where you live because of the sunshine. If you live in the Sahara Desert yes. Take care Walter from Liverpool Merseyside England

      Hi Walter - thanks mate. I should probably mention solar irradiance strength here in Aus vs other parts however the strength of the light should not affect the voltage as much as the amps. Your panel must have a low Vmp to start with. I would still use a regulator if I was you but it if its working for you then happy days.

    24 volt system changes the whole equation, 31.8 volt panels match very well to pwm for 28-30 volt charging...simplicity and cost effective. MPPT is good for voltage matching, that's the main plus ...thanks for the demo⚡

      Hey mate. Yes but I'm using a standard Victron DCDC 12 to 24V charger from the altenator. It pushes the power upto 24V. I feed this into the MPPT so it thinks its getting a solar panel at 24V. The MPPT then charges the battery. The only reason I did this was because i couldn't find a DCDC charger with a cumstom charge profile that could go up to 16.2V for my battery pack.

    Hey dear I am facing power dropping issue in series connection. I have connected 340watt and 380watt solar panels in series to epever 40A mppt controller with 12v battery. It show power of one panel when I disconnect solar connector and reconnect, the mppt show both Panels. It’s hard to do this every morning. It was fine in winter but now summer starting and facing this issue. Using both panels form 2 months. after wire disconnect and reconnect the voltage jump from 33-36 to 75v. If something wrong with one solar panel then it should not work after replugging mc4 or solar wire in the mppt after that It work whole day but same issue next morning Both panels volts amps are little different. Tesla 34.51v maxpower 33.18v. Tesla amps 11.01amps maxpower 10.29amps.

      Hi Mate - can you describe what is happening again? First in the morning when both panels are connected in series it is only showing 33-36 V on the MPPT? but if you disconnect the panels from being in series via the MC4 connectors and then reconnect it shows 75V on the MPPT? I will need to have a multimeter to do some testing. First thing you need to do in the morning is test the voltage going into the MPPT. Use the multimeter on the MPPT solar terminals and read the voltage, this is to check what the MPPT is showing is correct. Next, disconnect the panels from the MPPT (you can leave pos or neg still in the mppt, just measure one terminal and the other free cable). Do not disconnect the panels from series at this stage just check the voltage of the panels. It should say 75V. I can not understand at all how it would not.

I will test volts in mppt terminal there might be error in display and mobile app. From last two days both panels connected in parallel and working normally. After 3,4 days I will connect them again in series. but this was strange that in series connection mppt pick one panel. Last year I faced the issue of 0.3A with 33-36v at 11,12,1 afternoon time. Mppt used to stand by panels and starts battery power in hot sunny weather. After few days of troubleshooting issue resolved. I though battery sensor sending overheating message of battery and mppt standby the panel. But epever told me that you have oversized your mppt it’s 12/520watt max at single battery and my panels 340+380watt they told me to never cross the 520 otherwise it will damage the mppt. But solar panels never produce 100% I am getting 70-75% power. Mppt never crossed 40A. Reached to 39.5 amp and 574watt once after rain. Usually never crossed 520. If issue remained I will sell 380watt solar to buy another 340 to match both.

      @@DigitalMind.254 - Ok let me know how you go with testing the panels. 1st step - try to confirm it is an error with the controller not the panels. It makes no sense that the panels could change their output voltage unless there was a loose connection but that still doesn't add up to me.

    i bought a 550w (46v)solar panel and a 300w power station. my power station can take 100w (12v) from a solar and my solar panel is 550w (obviously too much). what do i do in this situation? i want to reduce the power of the solar panel to balance out everything with my power station.

      Hi Mate - what power station is it? Can you send me brand and model. My thoughts are you probably need to put it through a DCDC 48 to 12V (min 10A) converter. Usually they have an input Voltage range of 30-60V. You only need 10A. I'm assuming the power station has an inbuilt MPPT. You set the output voltage to 15V or whatever the minimum is on the power station and it will pull whatever power it needs from the converter which takes from the panel. I can't be completely sure though if the converter will like the fluctuation power from the panel. I could do a test run for you.

      ​@@sunbiasolaroffgridsolution6545i live in south africa. the brand is EcoNode. no, it doesn't have a built-in mppt. i searched on google for answers on how to reduce the high voltage from the solar panel. mppt was suggested and i came across your video. should i find a professional near me to help? because im on a tight budget, i can't afford to sell my current solar panel and buy another one that's lower in voltage.

    Hello friend, how are you? My MT 50 works normally with the solar panel OFF, but when I turn the panel on it restarts. I turn off the panel and it goes back to normal, the 40a Epever is normal, charging the batteries, inverter ok, everything works, what could it be? I tested with another network cable and the same thing, it's as if when connecting the solar panel the voltage on the RJ45 changed and it restarted.

      That is very strange. It shouldn't happen as long as you still have the batteries connected.. You should speak to supplier about a replacement.

      Depends what type of lead acid battery you have. The EPEVER's have 3 different lead acid charging profiles. Sealed, Gel, flooded. Check the specs on your battery and compare to epever manual.

    I believe if your just wanting a maintenance charge on some rv batteries the ppm controller should be just fine 2 panels wired parallel

      Yeah mate if you don't care about how much of the power is used from your panels - ie just for maintenance it wouldn't matter. If your trying to maximise the power out of your panels then it might.

    26W from PWM in this example. If you use 24V battery, it would be 52W, because from MPP down, power is almost linear. Basically no difference between PWM and MPPT, or maybe 2Watts would be with those panels and 24V battery.

      Correct. Minimal difference in power loss between the two if your solar Vmp is close to your charging voltage. But the higher your solar voltage vs battery/charge voltage the higher your energy loss in a linear relationship.

    Hey man! Thanks for the video... i have a question, i just connected an Epever 40 amp xtra 4210 on a flooded battery... the battery manufacturer said that the lowest the battery can be discharged is up to 11.7 v... how can i set that parameter into the controller!?

      Hey mate. The only way you can control when your loads are cut off from the controller is by running it through the load output on the controller. Then you need to go into the battery parameters (with an mt50) and you can edit the low voltage cutoff. There’s another video on how to edit battery parameters. Hope this helps.

    Hey man thks for the video , i got the load terminal conected, when i press the power button turns the load off right. But says the battery is 56 % soc, when i press the power button again turns the load on, but now the battery says is 86% soc, i dont understand that part , how do i know wich is the real soc and load should be of or on when i charge the battery. 120ah lithium.Thks mate

      Hey mate. Easiest one to answer. You can definitely have load on while charging. The charger will just deliver the power coming in from solar directly to load and surplus to battery or draw from battery to load if not enough solar. Now do you mean when you press the load button it turns the load on and off? Thats strange that the SOC % is changing. I would have thought maybe when you turn the load on and its being powered by the battery that the SOC % showing will drop because when a load is on the battery the voltage will drop slightly. The SOC % is just a calculation based on the battery Voltage. Can you do this again and tell me what the voltage of the battery is each time you do this? Eg 86% 13.3V, 56% 13.1V.

      Hi man thks for answering🫡 , ok load is on says battery 86% at 13.3 v. Press esc/power load goes off , controller reads 12.7 v at 56%. Something is wrong, something to say no matter if load is on or off 12v appliances light etc all dc works fine regardless . Multimeter reads 13.1 v . Thks new on this things sorry

      @@gustavoprezioso9687 No worries mate. hmmm, this is sounding pretty strange. Do you have a photo of your set up you could send? When you turn the load off the light on the left turns off? The circuit you are powering off the load doesn't have a battery connected to it does it?

    Nice set up, mine is similar but still not finished. I do have a question. The XTRA controller has a default charging profile for LiFePo4 batteries. the 8s/24v default profile, among its many parameters,,bulk charges at 29.2 volts and float charges at 27.6 volts. Why do you see a need for the MT50? I have one but my Amazon return window is closing. TIA.

      GGGG - sorry mate I didn't see this comment till now. I think the new models now have pre-programmed LiFePo4 charging profiles which is sweet and you don't need the MT50. The older versions don't have a pre programmed LiFePo4 profile and you needed the MT50 to create it.

    Hey mate. Question on the breakers in your videos. I'm putting a Noark Switch MCB DC 2 Pole 40A 360V non-polarised breaker on my camper van. Same model as you have here, a Ex9BP-N. Do I just put the 8 B&S - and + from the solar panel into the bottom of the Noark, (one each side ie. one to each screw) then out the top (load side) then connect the MPPT solar in via Anderson plugs like you wired up here?. (I want to protect MPPT and be able to isolate panels with the Ex9BP-N). I'm thinking of adding Andersons 50a connectors to the breaker wiring too, both ends so will have permanent Anderson connectors each side (input and output) of the breaker. Any issues in having Anderson connectors attached to the breaker wiring? reason, my MPPT then can be unplugged and taken out into the portable solar when not taking the camper trailer with me, example: going to the beach and just taking fridge, solar panels and battery, and of course the mppt. Also, last one, why the different breaker with red switch lever and not to same breakers ie. both Ex9BP-N's? Cheers!

      Hey mate. Thanks for the message. Yes you can connect pos and neg of solar into the breaker from your panels then out to the MPPT. An anderson plug on either side is also fine and a good idea for your application - ie to unplug and use elsewhere. No reason for using a different breaker only that’s what I had on hand. If you look at my other video I use a heavy duty battery isolator switch and fuses on the cable to isolate from the battery to the mppt/distribution. This is a better option over a circuit breaker if you have big loads from the battery - like an inverter.

      Nah not entirely. Really depends on your solar panel or solar array's operating voltage. If you've got 60Vmp of solar coming in charge a 12V battery a PWM would enormously less efficient than an MPPT.

      Hey mate - sorry for the slow reply. So in parallel you add the A and the volts stay the same. So yes it will now be a 12V 210ah battery!. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

      @@oxmate you using an MT50? The time in mins should be available to edit when you go into customise the charge profile. Like when you go into adjust ‘user’ alongside the voltages there should be a time to adjust for equalize

      Hi there - plug the sensor into the controller and run it down to the battery. Tape it to the side of the batter or positive terminal should be fine.

    Oi mate. I wonder. If I do a set up like that On a solar system I’ve got run out of my shipping container shop ! I wonder if I can just ground the battery to the container And run my power out to lights and shit just with a positive wire Then ground the light or what ever to the container ? I’m not a sparky aye But sounds fair dinkum aye ? Like a car set up. Negative ground ? Whatta reckon?

      Hey mate. Well yeah I think in theory it should work but I’ve not done that before. I’d imagine You’d have to have a good connection to the container to let the power flow. Trial one and let me know how you go.

    Mate i wish it was that easy. Im using user 24v lithium iron 18650 cells and after 2 hours of playing i cant get it to load. No matter what i do i get a para error. Its driving me nuts.

      Im getting somewhere... :) finally. I wrote down each parameter and voltage. Going through the list i was able to see which setting was not allowed compared to others. Quite a mission..

      @@markkennard861 hey mate. Yeah it’s a pain if you don’t know. You have to adjust the voltages in a specific order otherwise it can’t accept it because not obeying the algorithm rules. The manual shows you all the rules. I had a markup of what order to do it in. If I find my mark up showing the order I’ll send it to you. Send me an email if you like

      @@sunbiasolaroffgridsolution6545 Yes indeed. As great as they are its not documented on how to aproach programing. Think you need to start at the end of the list and work your way to the start. As a guide i set the user parameters to the N06 preset figures and worked from there.

    Great simple set up, helps a heap. Could you show / explain how the circuit breakers were installed on the wooden board? I can't find the DIN rain and looking to find a solution to install it on a a plywood.

    I have downloaded the parameter for LIFEPO4 but they don't give anything for Equilize duration and Boost duration, what would be the correct numbers? Where did you get your numbers, they are different than the ones in the manual. Thank You for this video!

      Hi Julie - very sorry I didn’t see this comment. I just leave the durations as original - 120mins I think. The numbers should be from the manual or the battery manufacturer specifications.

      @@sunbiasolaroffgridsolution6545 Thanks for your answer. All batteries don't have that spec, when contacted, some manufacturer are unsure !! . Suggested in the previous manual setting's of the MT-50 (non lithium) is 120. User is 20 to 180. New suggested Lithium settings for the MT-50 the equalize duration is not mentioned. that's why I wondered what you put in :-0)

      @@sunbiasolaroffgridsolution6545 Yes. Equilize is 0 or off. Boost duration, the last setting on the MT-50. It would be 180 min- not there either for suggested lithium settings. but suggested by Battle born for the MT50 - epever solar charge controller. thks

    For small systems PWM is adequate. If you want more amps from PWM add another solar panel to compensate.

      Well yeah you could. I think the key point here is - a pwm is fine for small systems where the solar panels voltage is close to the batteries voltage.

    note I already have one of the panels, the EPever controller and the AGM batteries. As I'm intending to be sleeping next to this lot, safety is the most important consideration - even more than good value!

    Thanks mate - that's a good introduction for non sparky blokes (which is me). I did buy the Epever and mt50 for my first van conversion system - but Im considering my second more ambitious van conversion. First I have to resolve which DC to DC charger to buy that works with my current EPever solar charge controller - any advice welcome so I don't buy the wrong thing. In your shed I'm thinking that a bit of insulation on the inside roof and or walls wouldnt go amiss - it must be unbearably hot in there.

      Gday mate. Sorry for the slow reply. You can email directly. What sort of Epever mppt do you have and what battery are you charging ? Is it lead or LiFePO4? Shouldn’t matter what dcdc you use in relation to your mppt. Premium is redarc, next is victron or enerdrive then probably last is renogy.

      Haha yeah that shed is hoooottt in summer. Free sauna though. I’ve got a fan rigger up but it doesn’t do much. I don’t spend that much time in there during the middle of the day.

    Hello bro I have Xtra 40 4415 can I attach 2 panels of 380watt in series or in parallel for maximum output. Will it damage the controller?

      Hey mate - yeah 760W panelsis just ok for a 12V battery. The max is 780W I think. Can be in series or parallel it doesn’t matter cause you only have two panels.
