They may use petrographic microscopes and examine thin sections of the drilled core to examine and the rock and pick out minerals present in the rock. They can also use a Scanning Electron Microscope to get the elemental composition of the sample and compare it to standard values for different rocks to know what it is.

The oil fields are going strong right now. Starting pay will be low, most likely as much as your making now, but with way more hours. However don't let that scare you away network with directional and mwd and try to move into that side. Don't let the mudlogging trap get you.

@@Theausomecaleb I do know that while on the rigs I just don’t log the sample we also have to keep track of gas data on a chromatograph and sometimes a mass spec. We have gamma data that gets emailed to us and we just upload that via a flashdrive. We also keep watch over the drilling parameters on the log as well.

Thanks for your question, a fresh graduate can't go an offshore and work as ML, He has to pass basic ML training( Sensors , data acquisition, Know ML software & hardware in use, Drilling operations.....), A fresh graduate can go offshore and work as Sample catcher.
