Three Fountain Pens Compared: Monza3, TWSBI Swipe and Platinum Prefounte

I n this video I look at three inexpensive fountain pens to see how they compare. Each has it's own unique features but how do they write? Is one clearly "better" than the others? The results might surprise you.
Thank you.

Monza 3 Fountain Pen - A First Look
Просмотров 6462 года назад
I purchased the Monza 3 fountain pen. It comes with 3 nibs, sections and converters so it is easy to switch nibs and inks. There is a fine nib, a medium and a flex nib. It was the flex nib that attracted me. Is the flex nib all I had hoped?
TWSBI Sapphire Blue fountain pen ink

In this video I do my first review of a fountain pen ink and I have selected TWSBI Sapphire Blue . This is a very nice ink in a great bottle that is real value for the price. Watch this video to see what it is like and if you have any questions just leave them in the Comment section or send me an email. My email address is at the end of the video.

I was looking for something to keep my journal and a sketch pad in one convenient package when I came across this Lihit Lab Notebook cover out of Japan. It includes an expandable spiral notepad and still holds my journal, sketch pad, pens and my e-reader. Take a look. I love it and you might too.

Parker quink won
I still can't decide and continue to use all fo them regularly. Whichever one I am using seems to be my favourite, until I use one of the others. So many inks, so little time.
I agree with with you on the "best" of these inks, Sir. Also to add: J. Herbin Lie de The has been the first bottle of ink I have ever disposed off, sadly, as it was taking ages to dry, and was smudging way too much!
I do like the Pelikan Brillant Brown.
Thanks for the nice video, Sir. If I may, and you have not tried it yet, it's worth trying Jacques Herbin Essential Terre d’Ombre! A great green ink in my opinion!
Glad you enjoyed it. I haven't tried the Terre d'Ombre yet. I will try to get some and do a review of it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Just discovered the channel and subscribed. Dip nibs can have problems with thin or dry inks. They might benefit from some gum Arabic but that would make them unsuitable for fountain pens.
Welcome! The gum Arabic could help but I think it was just bad nibs. The finer nibs in that set have work well. The Speedball nibs have worked well in all the inks I have tried in since.
Happy to have discovered your channel. I am subscribing!
I'm glad you found me too. Welcome.
This is interesting. Brown inks are beautiful. Thank you, @G.Webster Studios. Beautiful handwriting, I need to practice. I enjoy the color of all the three inks you reviewed here. (Did you have to shave off the blue beard, and let it grow back? Or was a good rinse enough?)
Thanks @aresaurelian! The blue was a costume store spray that washed out easily.
How is it that you did a video on multiple blue fountain pen inks, yet you didn't include the most famous one, Noodler's Baystate Blue! 😆
Well, to be honest, I did have a bottle of Bay State Blue at the time. I do now and I will share my thoughts and experiences with it in an upcoming video. Stay tuned.
Thanks Anil kapoor 😅😅 nice video ❤
Thanks.
The swab is a beautiful blue. After drying, it looks more like a blue-black!
It does look dark in this video and I have found that it looks darker using this pen than it does when used in my Jinhao 9019 for example. I actually use this ink almost daily and really enjoy it. In a coming video I will be looking at TWSBI's Blue Black which is rapidly becoming on of my favourite inks.
Its so good to see someone using/demonstrating colored pencils for something other than coloring books. Very impressive. Thank you.
Thanks. I love using coloured pencil to create "fine art". It is an incredibly flexible and accessible medium and lots of fun to work with.
This is the first time I have seen a video of anyone creating a piece like this with color pencils and I am inspired to try this! Thank you.
Thank you!! This is why I did this video. I love coloured pencil and want to see it used more in fine art. I would love to see how you make out. I am working on creating an online course in coloured pencil. Let me know if you are interested. Either way you can reach me at pencils@gwebsterstudios.com if you have any questions or need a hand.
Hey man you have blue eyes too 😅
You are not the first to tell me that!
I love Private Reserve, but their inks bleed a lot on less than premium paper - even paper that other inks don’t bleed through as much.
Yeah, that is sometimes an issue but I agree they are nice inks and I have several that I use regularly. I use TWSBI inks successfully on regular school loose-leaf paper everyday and no issues with bleed.
Chalk me up as another person who is a fan of American Blue. Admittedly I am biased against blues that lean toward purple (I really don't know why; I love purples that lean toward blue). I avoid royal and sapphire blues. American Blue is a true blue, IMO. Unfortunately, American Blue has a tendency of too much showthrough/bleedthrough compared to many others. But it is not alone in this. Many other similarly-shaded inks like Diamine's Blue Velvet and PR's DC Electric Blue are prone to show-/bleedthrough as well. PR's American Blue _fast dry_ formula is less prone to bleedthrough but paradoxically takes longer to dry, in my experience. It is a darker shade of blue, somewhere between the standard formula and Diamine's Oxford Blue. These days my top 5 true blues are (in no particular order) PR's Electric DC Blue, Monteverde's Horizon Blue, Diamine's Skull & Roses, Diamine's ASA Blue, and Robert Oster's Soda Pop Blue. If I need a business/legal-friendly waterproof blue I reach for R&K's Salix... although that's a different shade from all the rest.
I forgot to say thanks for the video! It was nice to see these four inks share a page. :)
American Blue is certainly a wonderful blue. It is the blue currently in my journaling pen and I am enjoying it. So many blue, so little time.
Waterman is the best for me
The Waterman is a beautiful ink and one of my absolute favourites. Reasonably priced too.
@@g.websterstudios6674 And do you suggest me fine nib parker 45 flighter deluxe? 1980-2000 model.
cool book mate
I really is a great journal cover. I still use it daily and love it.
Great review!
Thanks.
Obrigado pelo ensinamento
I have the Wordsworth & Bläck fountain pen. Love it 🖤
Even though I now have a lot of fountain pens, this one remains one of my favorites.
I think it is a very good idea to write with the broad nib. You see the differences among the inks more clearly. I like the rythm and the way you uses. Greetings from 🇪🇦. Sorry for my english.
Blue mountain coffee 😂 My favorite blue is still bay state blue. These all look gorgeous though. I hope I never get baystate blue in anyone’s beard though.
It is great coffee!😁
PR DC Super Show Blue 👈🏻 review Please 🙏🏻
Good suggestion! Thanks. I'll see what I can do. I'm up to my ears at the moment but I'll see if I can do it within the next month.
Try Blue Black
I'm working on a video on Brown inks and then I'm doing one on Blue Black inks. If life does interfere to much, within 3 or 4 weeks.
You need to get some majohn/moonman pens in your life, I highly recommend the C4 an T1
This is Gordon's wife responding: PLEASE DON'T FEED THE BEAR!! I know he has looked at these pens and now he will probably buy them based on your comments. He does not need more pens regardless of what he says.
my favourite ink is baystate blue
It is an intense blue.
I definitely like the Syo Ro. I like most of the Iroshizuku inks. After hearing about the Trouble Maker ink's for some time, I finally have a couple on order: The Opon Channel and their Purple Yam.
Yeah the Syo RO is a beautiful ink. I'm not sure what it is about it that make it stand out above other similar coloured inks, but it really does. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Trouble Maker inks when you get them.
@@g.websterstudios6674 The Purple Yam is a very dark purple. I like it quite a bit. Seems to vary depending on paper, somewhat. The Opon Channel Blue is a nice blue/green. I do see more shading with that one than the Purple Yam.
@@RJayRoberts Sorry for the delay in responding. I am really enjoying the Opon Channel more than I thought I would. I look forward to trying the Purple Yam (and a couple other of their inks). It is an interesting line of inks.
Which is better waterman mysterious blue or this one?
Not sure which other ink you are refering to, All four are good inks, so to say one is "better" than the others would be difficult. If you are asking which is my favourite, I'm not sure that is any easier. It really depends on which one I'm using at the time. I enjoy them all. The Waterman is certainly a good inkand one I use regularly. Hope that helps.
@@g.websterstudios6674 yes it does thank you so much
I missed writing with one of these from school. Got brave and ordered one and I love it!
I don't remember it being this much fun in school though! I'm glad you are enjoying it.
I just bought 80 ml of Jelly Bean Blue based on your review and numerous good reports, Plus as a Canuck, I feel good dealing with the home team.
Glad you found it helpful John. They are making some REALLY interesting inks and pens. And it is great to support the "home team".
I just bought my first fountain pen last month on the 21st. I'm going to have a second one tomorrow. They're both Woodsworth & Black. If I knew people that loved to write I would buy these as a gift.
Welcome to the rabbit hole Andrew. I was making some notes a few minutes ago and it is still such a joy with a fountain pen. Now look at all the different inks you have to try. Another joy!
@@g.websterstudios6674 Also not having bad hand cramps so I can write longer. It will definitely make me look forward to writing more.
@@Andrew-em7py Enjoy.
Really like the Ferris Wheel Press jelly bean blue. Reminds me of a darker Baystate Blue (which I use in the free pen that came with the BSB). For work, I use the Montblanc permanent blue. It’s very dark, more of a blue/black, but it fits the requirements of my job. Your blues series has expanded my options! Thank you!
Thanks for your comments. The Ferris Wheel inks are really special. I'm not familiar (yet) with the Montblanc blue but look forward to trying it. There are so many blues yet to try. I am enjoying making this series and hope to have some new videos very shortly.
@@gordonsviewsreviews3360 The MB permanent blue is a blue black. I use it for work as it can’t be tampered with and I need that for my job. Noodlers Bay State Blue is just vibrant-but limited to the free pen that came with the ink. I agree-so many blue inks of all hues to try.
Nice intro 🤣👍👌
Thanks.
It is a great pen.
It really is and it remains one of my favourites. I use it almost every day.
I feel like it helps a lot to see how different inks write with different pens. I enjoyed this video very much.
Thanks Anna. I have been surprised more than once at how different an ink can appear depending on which pen it is coming from.
@@gordonsviewsreviews3360 20 years ago, my Mom got me a set of pen tips with some quills. The tips look like they might be brass or something. I've only tried them with one type of ink (Levenger). It didn't even occur to me that ink can look different when used with different pens.
They are all really nice blues. I prefer the lighter colors too.
Thanks Anna. They really are nice aren't they?
Greetings from belgium, keep up with the good work.
Thanks Kevin. I have been a little (okay, a lot) slow at getting the next video out but it will be posted in early January. I'll be looking at blue-green inks.
Great stuff. Nicely done. Thanks.
Thanks Kevin,
I think the first ink is twisbi emerald green.
Hi Lakshya. You are absolutely correct. I use the TESBI Sapphire Blue all the time and that was stuck in my head and I didn't notice until I was editing .
I have aa green ink I like better, the emerald green looked best in the writing and the noodlers the best for the swab
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these inks LeMarr. Personally, I find the Noodler's too bright for my tastes but I was pleasantly surprised by the Emerald Green. It does look good in the writing samples.
Love these inks ! But I really want to know what the name is of that pen
Hi Muhammed. The pen is a glass dip pen I purchased on Amazon. I would give you the link but this specific pen is no longer available. However there are still lots of glass dip pens listed on Amazon. Hope that helps. If not, let me know.
So far my fave green ink is KWZ Chicago Green. Behaves beautifully, short dry time and flows wet. I've given up on Noodlers Forest. Dry time is 1,000 yrs.
Thanks for sharing. I haven't tried any of the KWZ inks yet but they have some great colours. I look forward to trying some of them soon.
Limited Edition I'm assuming? And I agree with Forest taking forever to dry. It can get annoying
I’m sooooo tired of ppl thinking and acting as though kon peki is great. Okay…. At best…..
Didn't realize I was raving about Kon Peki. It is actually an ink I don't use much. I used it in this test BECAUSE so many people do use it and it would maybe give them a better idea of how the pen preforms.
Thanks for the realistic comparisons of many colors! 👏 May I ask what basic dark, simple nib holder that you use?
You're welcome Bill. The nib holder I am using is from a set I purchased on Amazon. Here is the link. ( www.amazon.ca/sspa/click?ie=UTF8&spc=MToyMjY4NTkwMzEwMjQyNTMyOjE2NjUwMjA2OTA6c3BfYXRmOjIwMDA2NTgwNTQzMzI5ODo6MDo6&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&url=%2FHethrone-Calligraphy-Fountain-Writing-Beginners%2Fdp%2FB07PVLYZVK%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1_sspa%3Fcrid%3D3GUQEY4XU6O1U%26keywords%3Ddip%2Bpen%2Bset%26qid%3D1665020690%26qu%3DeyJxc2MiOiI1LjIxIiwicXNhIjoiNC4xMyIsInFzcCI6IjMuNDYifQ%253D%253D%26sprefix%3Ddip%2Bpen%252Caps%252C196%26sr%3D8-1-spons%26psc%3D1 ) As you will have seen in the video not all the nibs work well. I find the broader nibs will release whatever ink they are holding on first contact with the paper, resulting in the blotches you saw, then dry out completely. It may just be me. I will continue to see if I can get them working properly and I may do a video on it later. In the meantime, I think you can do better by selecting a nib holder and buying quality nibs separately. It will likely be cheaper and will definitely be less frustrating. Let me know how it works out for you.
The twsbi does have a hint of... Sapphire in it. 😄 The pine is definitely piney. All very nice inks. It is helpful to see the 2 nib samples on the same page. I think I like the twsbi the best, noodler's second.
Well, either way the TWSBI is a gem! Thanks for the feedback Roland.
As they say if you first dont succeed, try try try again. The words are a mouthfull but none the less easy to pronounce once you lock your tongue around the annunciations. Thanks for the presentation. I enjoyed it through and through.
I can say it in my mind easily but when I open my mouth... Thanks for your comment.
I find the swipe’s clip to be nearly useless, myself. Nice video though. I like videos about relatively affordable pens. Helps me decide what to waste my money on.
Thanks Christopher. If I had taken all the money I have spent on "cheap" pens and saved it, I could afford one or two high end pens, but then I would have missed out on all the fun I have had along the way. Glad I could help you decide where to waste some money. ;-)
Is it medium or fine nibble?
Hi Pablo. It is a medium nib, however you can order the pen with a fine or an extra fine nib if you wish.
💙🖋
The first three just look like they are the same pigment, that blue print blue. The fourth definitely does look like a different hue to the other three.
Yes, they appear very close in the video but are not quite as close in person. The Pelikan Royal Blue has a slight purply tint to it while the Parker tends to be a bit paler than the Waterman. The Private Reserve is a deeper blue.
I like that you also show how the ink performs with the broad nib. Thank you! I really like Tsuyu Kusa as well.
Glad you like it. Even though I struggle to pronounce it I love that Tsuyu Kusa ink.
