Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley
Добавлен 3 июн 2020
Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley works to ensure the Valley’s rural character, scenic beauty, clean water and vibrant communities are protected by providing accurate and timely information to community members and decision makers. We believe that, together, we can preserve what is important to community members and grow in ways that are sensitive to the extraordinary natural and cultural resources that distinguish our region.
2024 Valley Treasure & North Star Ceremony
Our first in person Valley Treasure program was held at the Friendly City Food Co-op in Harrisonburg.
The Alliance presented the 2024 Valley Treasure award to the Friendly City Food Co-op to recognize their lasting impact on the local community and beyond, providing local, organic and allergy-friendly food and products while building a stronger connection between people and producers.
As we honor Friendly City Food Co-op as our 2024 Valley Treasure, it feels right to also recognize Sari Carp as this year’s North Star. Sari, the co-founder and first Executive Director of Sustainability Matters, was a passionate advocate for the health of our planet and worked tirelessly to make a difference...

In this virtual gathering as a part of our Community Input Meeting series, we reviewed the history and status of the Shenandoah Rail Trail project, why a trail is the best option for this corridor to once again serve the communities along its route, and the possibilities a trail brings. The Shenandoah Rail Trail Project would convert almost 50-miles of an unused rail corridor running between Br...
Our North Star - John Adamson
Просмотров 482 года назад
This year, we honored the late John Adamson with our first North Star recognition. The name of this recognition was inspired by John who believed that Shenandoah County’s Comprehensive Plan and its vision of an agriculturally-based future for the county was the North Star for conservation and land use planning. To this day at staff meetings and in Alliance board meetings you can hear his words ...

Nicely done! Good old fashioned protest folk song.
perfect idea, to buy a train and repair the rails would be several million dollars . It's a one way track and only lazy ass people would take it.
I don't think it will be a train track again, Im fune with making it a nice biking trail.
So initiate eminent domain proceedings to force the owner to sell or have it seized for the public good.
This is soo 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I HATE rail trail it should be trails-rails people like trains better than rail-trall why don't you guys just instead of turning it into a trall make a train track bicycle or pedal car that runs on train track people would love that more or let trains run on it which is the best
I want to see a tourist railroad happen on this line. I recently signed the petition to save the line.
I agree a million percent they are train track murderers we could use a steam train here and be a cool tourist railroad
Have you priced a used locomotive and cars? Have you priced conductors and cleaning crews, maintenance crews and insurance? Have you priced rebuilding many sections of old worn out track? Are you a moron?
3 million for the first phase of this rail and only half a million to house homeless vets, the disabled and seriously mentally ill in Harrisonburg. Nothing for Clarke, Frederick or Shenandoah counties for the homeless! We have people sleeping in Wal-Mart parking lots all over Winchester but that's ignored! Take care of human beings basic needs first!
put them to work helping build the trail , it would provide a lot of jobs which is what they need, not handouts
I just wish it could be an active rail line again.....
Definitely agree with you there as I am a train fanatic and have always wanted to catch this part of that railroad line in action again. If I'm correct they stopped using it around the year 2016 even back then they would run the trains to mount Jackson and no further. Now they just run to the broadway vpgc feed mill.
@@prestonwells1840 have you priced a used locomotive and cars lately, what a joke,
@@coolmtnman1 oh I believe it for sure. Went by the pilgrims plant in broadway today and nothing but tall grass and weeds taking place of the rails. It’s just sad
Congratulation Zig!
Thank you, Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley, for making this wonderful video available for those of us who missed the program. Amy Johnson/s presentation was informative and inspiring. And the video about Professor Zig was excellent. Congratulations, Professor Zig, on this well-deserved recognition for a lifetime of work that helped make the Shenandoah Valley a more habitable place for birds and that inspired so many students and community members to care about birds. You are truly an inspiration.
I met Professor Zig several years ago. I was walking on Mill Creek Road near Shady Grove Road in Rockingham County. He stopped in his car to ask if I had seen any bird activity. What?? I thought. He then explained about the bird boxes I had noticed along my walks but didn’t question. He explained more about birds that flew over us as we talked in the middle of the road a good 20 minutes… him in his car and me of foot. He has stopped me a couple other times to chat about birds. As a result, I pay attention better to nature when I walk. I love that Professor Zig has been recognized for his service to nature… the birds and the people.
What a great story Linda - thanks for sharing! We've so loved hearing this and many stories like it from the many folks Professor Zig has influenced!
TRAILS DON'T JUST MAGICALLY. How many of YOU have actively helped create one or more trails near you, not just been users?
Richard - you're absolutely right! The local community has been exploring the possibility of a Shenandoah Rail Trail for already more than five years, and we have a long road and a lot of work ahead of us, but the support for the trail is strong and encouraging and it will be well worth the effort and wait!
This would be great. If there is a possibility for any exercise / fitness component I would be happy to donate design services.
Yes! A most wonderful 2021 project to be proud of for the whole Valley! I’m originally from Broadway and this has always been on my mind since I was a little girl. I live in Germany now, and this is the way of life here..connecting villages and communities with multiple ways to exercise, “wander” and congregate with neighbors. The trails also help stimulate small businesses and restaurants/foodshacks/watering holes along the way! You must not forget benches, and trail signs, trash and recycle bins along with doggiedoo bag receptacles. I hope the local towns choose to invest in this project for us and our future generation’s enjoyment!
Yes, I want to support this. How do we help?
Hi John - thanks so much! You can find more info and sign up for email updates on shenandoahrailtrail.org. Soon we're going to share out information about an upcoming survey for the feasibility study that the state is conducting to gauge interest in the project. Thanks again for the support!
You guys are train track murderers you guys are ruining history people like trains better than trails you could turn it into a tourist line with steam trains and then people would love it
This would be awesome 😊
No this would suck it's very sad it could be used as a tourist line
