1949 Jeep Willy's Pickup Truck Restoration Part 1 - Tires and Towing

I am restoring my Grandads old 1949 Jeep Willy's Pickup Truck. It has been sitting for about 25 years and needs a lot of work. But in the end we'll have a street legal classic ready to drive the roads again.
How long are you gonna drive it without a cooling system?
I just released the new video in which we tackle all of that, got it running now and cooling
Whish I could find one in that good of shape.
Yeah I got really lucky with this one especially being on a budget, just keep looking and something will pop up that’ll be perfect for you, good luck
😉Freaking beautiful wish I would’ve found it
Yeah I feel blessed to have gotten this truck for what I did, always down to help someone find a good deal if you ever need help
Nice! Coming along well, bed looks great (except for the clearance issue you already know about). Yes, that is the thermostat housing, any thermostat between a 160 and a 180 should work fine, the 180 will give you more warmth from the heater in winter if that matters to you. If you hook up a temperature gauge with numbers on it, you want it to stay under 200 degrees when working hard, less at idle. I have no idea what a heat gun aimed at the block or head should read, try taking readings off other vehicles you know are at operating temperature to get a baseline? The oil filter on these engines was a metal can with a removable lid that bolted onto the intake manifold. It holds a replaceable paper element (which is kind of a mess to replace as it drips a lot and you still have to clean the dirty oil out of the housing). They are a bypas, rather than full flow, type filter so the engine works ok without them if you change oil every 2,000 miles, in fact, they were an accessory rather than standard equipment on some models so your truck may never have had one. There are two small pipe plugs on the block where the fittings for the flex hoses to the filter go. You can probably find one at an old school salvage yard, or swap meet, but if you don't care about original, they make remote mount filter bases that use modern spin on filters and hook up with flex hoses to your engine, much more convenient. I am enjoying watching the progress you are making, great to see the truck moving under its own power. Looking forward to the next installment!
Heck yeah, normally I care about originality but something like that would be better for sure as it doesn’t take away from the original truck a significant amount so I do appreciate that recommendation and might have to put that to use, and yeah we definelty gotta fix that clearance but I’ll definetly be posting more, even if the views are down I know atleast one person will enjoy it and am so greatful for the people in the comments who are down to help answer my questions, always something new to learn
COOL!!
Thanks, glad yall like it
Runs beautifully
51 does not have push button door handles
You actually got me to look into it as the guy I bought it from listed it as a 51, it’s got a 90 mph speedometer (started in 1952) and the push handle (started the same year) so it’s either a 52 or 53, trying to figure it out
Sweet old truck! You will have a lot of fun with it. Do as you want, I drove a '53 Dodge half ton as a daily driver for years and was happy with it bone stock, but if you want to modify it that is cool too. Looking forward to seeing more- Good Luck...
Thanks, I really do wanna keep it stock and make something straight out of the 50s, and I love the old dodges too, any classic is always cool to me
I love it, I want one ! Ok, a dozen. You have nice blonde hair, so tell us - Do Blonde's have more fun? Well owning vintage Buicks, I would think you would have more fun! If those are blinker lights in the back, on the sides, how cool and cute !
Brother, keep that car like it is bring it back to its glory. It’s wonderful there’s not very many of them around
Cool project!
Jacky Chan- The Tuxedo, he was excellent at kicking dents out of his roof. I think you guys got him beat!
try Bob's Buicks for parts
A wash and a interior detail would be cool to watch on this car
I assume that since you tried all the lights that your using a 6 volt battery unless it was converted to 12 in the past. Really a cool car!!
Yeah it’s still a 6 volt, after I know it runs, might do a 12 volt conversion but we’ll see how things go
BTW, that car looks like a factory sled. Highly deirable these days . You have a hidden Gem there . Dont let it slip awy.
It looks like you have a good base for restoration. A lot of cleaning will bring it back. You asked about parts websites. JC Whitney USED to be the go to source for everything prior to the modern age. You got this catalog in the mail. The company is still around. Seems they are having problems establishing a new website. Hard to navigate. But, it is there.
Bob’s Automobilia is a good source for parts for Buicks from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. I also recommend joining the AACA forum. The Buick Club of America is very active, and they can be a good source for parts + knowledge.
Mi abuelo tenía un coche de estos y yo quería que me lo dejarán para ir a la secundaria jajaja 😅
You picked a tough one to start with. That Dynaflow Transmission is complicated and the guys who built them are all dead. The last Dynaflow was made in 1963, but yours is tougher to work on. I would suggest that before you attempt a start you change the fluid in the Transmission. Taking them out is a bear. so pray you don't have to. Also be thankful your car didn't come with power windows. If you can not get a starting motor you can send yours to "Bonded Auto" Route 1A Ellsworth Maine 04605 and they can generally rebuild any starter for around $100, Be careful of the cloth wiring. More antique cars are lost to electrical fires than any other malady. You do know how that car starts right? You put the car in neutral turn the key to the on position, and push the accelerator pedal to the floor. The accelerator activates the starter.
I will definetly be cautious with the wiring as I seen after where it was grounding out on the dip stick so definetly need to redo the ignition wiring, and thanks for the tip on the starter
Kanter in new jersey
Club sites are usually the best place to find parts sources. There are plenty of people out there with the same cars that have been through the hunt already. Get that mystery oil into the engine. It takes time to work .
como decimos aquí : esta entero.👍
Very cool. Love the hood on those straight 8s. Most of the guys I watch use o'Reilly's. Some rock auto and napa.
Check with the Buck Club of America. Those folks will know where to buy parts.
PLEASE!!! Don't destroy that car. Get it running but then it should go to someone who will bring it back to it's glory. That car is so complete, it would be shame to do anything but restore it.
It’s gonna get fully restored for sure down the road, just wanna get it running good so it’s not sitting around like it has been for the last few decades and put under a shelter so it’s not accessible to weather damage when it’s not being driven
Hey man, don't listen to that guy. You should keep it because you will do a fine job restoring it yourself. @landonmclean7913
The best place find parts is kanter classic auto parts they have about everything you will need
Could that have been a police car I wonder with that Alley Light.I don't think that's standard
I want that car!!!!
I noticed a 1950 Buick Roadmaster in the area where you got this car.
Rock Auto... Young Boys at PLAY.
Cool car! Nice to see young guys interested in the hobby!
What an awesome car ! I'm jealous !!! Like @ winterforce 1969 said down below Kanter Automotive will be your best option .. Just remember that she's 6 volt with 76 year old wiring .I'm not sure but she might be a 6 volt "positive" ground system ,You should check into that before you blow your lights and dash gauges . Finding a set of gauges for that beauty would be bitch . Good luck and wear a mask when you clean her out so you wont get rat shit fever or something . Cheers .
Kanter auto part's
I am interested to see if there are any updates on this truck
Tailgates are rare ... keep that for sure.
W/O (Willies Overland) tailgates are pretty rare. Hang on to that!
Your starter is shown on the video it's under the distrubter on the left side
That colour is awful , just paint it army green like all the rest of them lol
That coon is ready for a ride
I have 2 of then
They're great trucks are yours projects or running?
Please make more videos!
I will for sure.
I stumbled on to your granddads jeep I did the same thing only my uncles when is part 3 showing up thanks Btw, in my day marvel m o was not made yet lol dan
That's good so you've also restored one? And part three should hopefully be here soon enough. Hopefully within the next few weeks.
Man you have a giant project ahead of you. Do some research for manuals. But before you do anymore painting get that starter working. Check your primary wiring for cranking and secondary wiring for spark. And don't forget that it's a 6 volt system. I'll be checking in on your progress. Good luck.
arent most 6 volt systems positive ground?
Thanks I appreciate the advice.
Great to see a young person taking on such a difficult yet worthwhile challenge. I’ve had my ‘49 Willys pickup for thirty years now after completely rebuilding it in my twenties. I’ve owned a lot of trucks but none compare to my Willys Overland.
Plus they are some of the best off roading vehicles according to my family who road in this truck through the swamp. And this look good too. Glad to see and hear from people that have the same truck.
@@landonmclean7913 I agree. I bought mine to be used primarily as a bush truck on a small island. It didn’t disappoint. That little Super Hurricane six could get itself out of any trouble it got into.
Nice work, keep it up.
I appreciate the support.
Yes it has a starter and it's a different tooth count from other Willy's jeeps as is the flywheel so don't lose them and the front engine mounting plate is also unique to the truck , I have 27 Willy's jeeps so if you have questions just reply ! I'm also doing a 49 truck right now so my memory is fresh, also beware of crate L heads many questionable rebuilders out there ,and if you switch to a floor shift tranny for gods sake don't loose the shifter parts as they are almost impossible to find , about 5 or 6 thousand dollars more and you'll be driving and stoppin
For sure hope your jeep Willy's pickup is coming along good too. And thanks for the advice if I got any questions I will be sure to ask you.
I do have one question. Do you know what size belts the trucks take?
@@landonmclean7913 I will go check mine here in a bit I think it's a new Dayco
@@landonmclean7913 so my belt is a NAPA auto belt made by Gates,. Napa part no. NBH 2522425 top width .594 / Belt angle 40 degrees/ effective length 42.54" /outside circumference 43.18" and it's on the 134 L head engine with original 6volt generator etc stock replacement belt , Walacks 4wd is also a good source of parts , many parts suppliers are using repro parts because all the originals have been used up long ago and I've always had good luck with Walacks but you have to expect some differences some times and deal with it as it comes or start your exhaustive search for originals which is fun but will also drive you nuts ! Anyway I would start with the basics like plugs, wires, points, condenser, cap, oil, filter, etc then if the engine seems ok move on to the drive line, second gear is famous for popping out of gear because of syncros which is relatively easy to fix and if I were you I'd keep the colum shift , then if you have a timken rearend it gets crazier cause many of the bearings aren't available anymore so then your looking for a Dana 53 which was standard and so on and so on anyway good luck and I'll be around if ya have anymore questions
@@Bob-tn5xn thanks for the help Ill put in an order for one as soon as I get done with my windshield.
Mixture of old oil, kerosene, trans fluid makes great fluid for cylinders.
Yeah they still have a little ways to go so I'll give that a try. I appreciate it.
Keep it up.the world needs more youngsters like you and your pals
Thank you for the support we will continue working hard and if you guys like the content we will keep posting.
Nice, I like it.
Thank you.
