this is bloodydamn good
Hail Libertas Hail Reaper
"Evil is the rejection of someone else's human rights." - Someone send this to Isreel!
Would have been cool to see the hands you ended up with! lol Love this game and new-ish to you guys.
I believe he is the biggest tool in the narrative. In this case, “tool” means something the author uses to do more work than he could otherwise do. Deus ex machina style. He has a mysterious power that works when and how he needs it to, unexplained. He is the smartest character in the universe and also an incredible fighter, particularly when mixed with his magic powers. We are never allowed to know his plans. We just wait to see how he has tricked everyone again and again-like Batman’s belt. He kills his best friend/father figure in a manner that does not seem reasonable given what we are mare to understand about Lysander. He is a crutch for good Mr brown.
I think Darrow is a really repulsive character. I was hating him all way through book 2 and 3. When the bill comes due in Iron Gold I was grinning ear to ear. Absolute wretched cretin.
Care to explain?
Okay, since writing this at Iron Gold few changes.. Including one major retcon on Gannymeade. But essentially: - He encourages the Obsidians violence and doesn’t discipline or restrain them for their atrocities. This directly leads to the Sack of Luna, the extermination on Mars and in Illium. - He in his own words doesn’t have a long term plan or ideological motivation for all the violence he does. He doesn’t believe in the Republic and is only doing so because he blindly follows Mustang. - He is thoughtless and ignorant. We know this because he starts thinking in Dark Age and Lightbringer. - Whilst he has some personal honour and respect for people. He seems to have no empathy whenever it comes to large groups of people killed as a result of his war. - He doesn’t really think about the politics and best way forward. In a story that could and arguably does end in genocide that’s dangerous. It’s entirely fortunate that he falls in love of Mustang who has a plan and is a Saint. Creating an actual democracy and freeing the slaves; without exterminating the Golds. - He shows an open disdain towards the idea of having a moral code up until Dark Age. He even refers to this as him always taking the shortest route to a problem and believing that’s always the best thing. Very end justifys the means:
@@or6397 He didn't encourage Obsidian atrocities? That makes it seem as if he directed or incentivized their barbarism. He said the exact opposite in his speech on Fobos. He explicitly states his regret for their savagery in Iron gold. As far as I know Darrow only ever has his doubts about the Republic, and rightfully so seeing as it was corrupted from within? Saying he doesn't believe in the Republic is reductive. Why exactly does Darrow have to do everything? It's his job to overthrow the space nazis without casualties and implement an ethical regime? Why can't his long term plan be install a just and fair ruler? Blindly follows Mustang is wrong too, seeing as he went to Venus without her blessing... You saying he has honor and respect for people but disdains a moral code is very contradictory... he shames Atalantia for her use of atomics, kills his own general Orien because of the devestation she wrought with the storm gods, and beemed with pride at the tens of thousands of lives saved by Alexander... You can obviously dislike whomever, I am not trying to talk you into liking Darrow. But your reasonings seem flawed...
We have repeated examples and statements that the Obsidians massacred civilians including on Luna against Red civilians. He tells Appolonius they were punished but then thinks they couldn’t because Sefi would be mad. He is never shown, prior to Lightbringer, punishing the Obsidians for their atrocities and romanticises his bond with them. In Lightbringer it is strongly implied in his inner thoughts that he ignored what they were and their violent tendencies as they commit genocide and slavery with the Ascomani. Because whilst he’s willing to accept Rouke can change he displays spectacular callousness towards civilians massacres at Phobos and the civilians fleeing. Telling Mustang it’s a good thing. His objection to Orion is an inflexion point in which he begins to doubt his path and realises how far one of his allies has gone. Up to that point he’s been willfully blind to the character of the people he’s taken into his cause. Because he’s leading a rebellion he should have had more interest in and expressed an understanding in the possibility of reform. This only happens with Mustang because he loves her. It’s only in LightBringer that he starts to think that maybe he can win over the Rim by talking to them instead of plotting to conquer them. Indeed he’s disgusted by the thought that he intended to do something quite similar to what Volsung Fa did at Sungrave. Being cynical in thinking of how he would “liberate” the city. In Lightbringer he realises that he has been taking the shortest path and realises this has only brought ruin and that gamble has not paid off. This is what he begins to realise when he gets to the Ash Lord and for the first time how much of a mess he has made.
@@or6397 Mustang wasn't made Soverign just because 'Darrow loves her.' He values her compassion and competency. He can lead the rebellion without being responsible for every detail. He knows his strengths and that of his allies and delegates accordingly. There is nothing wrong with that. The behaivor of the Obsidians is the result of centuries of cultural engineering. Blaming Darrow for their actions is ridiculous. And when has Darrow demonstrated "spectacular callousness"? Just because he knows and does what has to be done for change doesn't mean he is indifferent to the collateral. If anything there are multiple passages of Darrow feeling guilt, sorrow, and grief for what LowColors have to endure. Yes, he had blinders on. Yes, he attempted to take the shortest path to victory and even misjudged that Orien would take it as far as she did. But the very fact he preemptively built in the 'kill switch' tells me he wasn't as blind to her nature as you're saying. And talking/allying with The Rim is only even remotely a possibility because they are on the brink of collapse and he saved Diomedes' life. Yes, Darrow believes he's been taking shortcuts. But I think it's revisionist to say he thinks he's "only brought ruin." Unless your point is Darrow should have never sparked an uprising, because innocents will die. I fail to see your point. What character do you like?
Darrow has one insatiable hunger: Victory. First it was victory over the pit vipers venom, then the claw drill, then the institute, culminating with Society. Then he found the threats never end. Never a moment of peace and reflection, only the press of time weighing on his “peace”. The only way Darrow’s story ends is how all others he’s fought have, staring down the length of a razor with a young red on the other end. Hes the first new iron gold, and others are rising to meet his new standard, and the machine of war turns over and over again. I love it
Well this is stupid cool
Got me into the hc scene when the rim saw the scene and then back into darrows perspective
These short clips are some of my favorite on RUclips
I didn’t like that Cassius was killed. My opinion is that he needed to stay with Darrow till the end, as victors. Overall, Light Bringer was a great read. 😊😊😊😊
Nice but too slow needs to be sped up a bit
If Darrow and Apollonius don’t cross blades again in book 7 I’ll die 😅 in lightbringer Darrow says “if I were him I’d have bombs and a dead man switch. Him and I do often think alike” I think this shed light on Darrow darker side and how easily he can access that if necessary
Why no comments on the Pierce Brown interview. That’s my favorite series of all time you guys are wack
because he decided to support a genocidal state (Israel)
Dark age broke me 😂
Definitely improved on light bringer. On iron gold it was hard to differentiate at times. All in all. Phenomenal series.
Grey symbol book description doesn’t match sigil “a blocky gray symbol like the number four with several bars beside it”
Yeah.. sorry I hate Lysander. Because he says one thing and does the other. For me is unthinkable to betray someone that took care of you and loved you. But I understand what you guys are saying. Apple is horrible too, but I like him. I feel bad for liking him, but he is so dramatic and fun to read. I think when the series is done, I can feel different about Lysander. I most definitely hate the Jackal. From the moment he killed Pax. And now is a gross little clone! I wonder if Lysander is a clone…
Dude is handsome. Like hallmark movie handsome.
I love Pax (both of them actually!). I hope there is more of him in Book 7. He’s Brown’s Arya for me, the character that pulls me in the most.
Darrow is the villain that convinced us he's the hero. Sort of like how we are convinced the US was the hero in WW2.
America was the hammer to the ussrs anvil, the Ivan’s never got the credit they were due
Sure, let’s keep the slave state that is the Society. I’m sure Grant was the villain to the Confederate States
So are you sympathetic to the Nazi war crimes, Imperial Japan war crimes, or both?
@@FirstOfTheMagi The point is that there were no heroes in the war. It wasn't good vs evil, it was a power struggle between imperialists. Germany and Japan were upstarts competing against a global establishment- the West. Remember...the Nazi's took inspiration from the West. They were only copying what others have done (in different ways) all over the globe.
The Golds are spacenazi slavers, in what world is Darrow a villain??
This was such an enjoyable interview to watch, you guys asked so many deep, insightful questions about the series
Thank you very much. Pierce is such a fun dude to talk with. He really carried the conversation
I really wish there were more merch for Red Rising definitely would purchase
Lightbringer was amazing and the end is crazy
Listening while doing accounting
Lysander is a POS though that's what gives him the upper hand. His morality is very pleomorphic and he is capable of justifying and not taking responsibility for his own actions... As he stated, he figured out the game.
The end of this pod gave me chills . Thank you, boys. Thank you, PB. Hail Reaper!
Came here to hear the pronunciation of Darrow lol
It's a shame that he lost control of his sigil art due to marketing posting the hi res images. 😢
Does anyone here know which translation of the Iliad Piece Brown would recommend?
Homie has read Storm before the Storm for his Roman history.
Hey guys, I just learned about the books last month, and I have listened to all of them back to back. I'm obsessed, and I'm glad to find thoughtful commentary, and this interview with Pierce is great! I'll be plowing through your pod and hope to keep exploring this excellent series.
Whoa! Awesome job and thank you!
Lysander was and always will be a pixie
This guy is the goat
Finally found someone who agrees that Iron Gold is one of the best!
Lysander is such a well written character
Great read. Rankings after 6 books Golden Son Dark Age Morning Star Lightbringer Iron Gold Red Rising All of them are good though.
I still need to figure out where LB ranks but nice ranks yourself. Dig it!
How do y’all feel about Lysander now?!
Haha, our Lysander stance has been challenged a lot lately. I would love to clarify though. We love his character, what he provides for the story, how he's explored in a literary fashion but I will always contend that he is an epically bad hang ever since Iron Gold
I hope you guys can get Pierce back for a spoiler filled episode because Light Bringer was such an amazing book. I’d love to hear his complete thoughts for a lot of these questions
We did
ruclips.net/video/bkXXbQ1aTr8/видео.htmlsi=BzGXrjtXAJrqhrIw
Pierce is more excited talking about Ancient Roman and its figures than anything else. Gotta love his passion. It seeps through the pages and helps make the series what it is.
It fits perfectly.
I think that the new series is much better and while Darrow has been more of a background character in this sereis. The series is stronger for extended perspectives It really has grown from where it started in rising. Much appreciation for this work.
I was the same way as you guys about Lysander... Until Chapter 84. Curious how y'all feel now.
Lysander is a turd After chapter 84 he is now yhe biggest turd
Yooooooooo please dont put spoilers in the bloody damn thumbnail
Rest easy - the title isn't a spoiler.
Just finished it a minute ago. Was a great book, well worth the wait. Everything I wanted and more. Set up perfectly for the finale.
Wow the disrespect to Gormenghast 😔
Man finally this book is out for audio. 🤣
