Remembering D-Day with the World War 2 Club at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens
On 6 June 1944 (commonly referred to as D-Day), Allied forces undertook the largest amphipods operation in history that began the liberation of Nazi German occupied Western Europe. Operation Overlord was the codename given to the overall combined land, sea and air operation to deployed some 160,000 troops across the English Channel to land on Normandy.
An unknown number of Irish born living throughout the United Kingdom, British Commonwealth, and the United States severed in the Allied forces at the time. I am from Clonmel Co. Tipperary and my grandfather served with the 18th Of Foot 1st Bn during the Boer War. He was recalled to the colours in 1914 and went with the BEF with the 2nd Bn. He was wounded at Mons on Aug 23rd that year and taken prisoner in his hospital bed. He spent 3 years as a POW in Zerbst until repatriated via the Red Cross in 1917. My dad served in the same barracks under the Free State and my two brothers and I served there also. I had family in the 18th Of Foot/ 4th Queens Own Hussars/ 8th and 14th Hussars/ Royal Dublin Fusiliers/ Royal Munster Fusiliers/ Leinster Regiment. All in all I had 9 family serve in the Great War and three never came home. These men were largely forgotten about and I think it's a shame. I belong to the 18th Of Foot Association and we as a group endeavour to remember those who served and those who fell. Whilst there is no longer a military presence in the town it's people should never forget the sacrifices that were made by its soldiers and their families.

Hi, I’d like to ask a few questions in good faith😊 The Officer with the ‘beret’ with tassels eg at 04:52, they are Reserve Officers? Is that the Caubeen of the Irish Defence Forces? I think I read that once somewhere. Also, the style of halting is unusual but good. What is the precedence for this ? Did the Irish Forces create it or did they adopt or from another Army? Genuinely asking with an interest in military customs and traditions from throughout the world.

I ended up as a Troop Sgt in the unit before I then enlisted in the PDF, and then after a series of various postings, I came back to the Military Barracks in Castlebar as the PDF Training Sgt with the 5th Cav Sqn. I subsequently got commissioned and had a few stints as the PDF Trg Officer with the 18th Inf Bn (also based in the barracks) and then for one brief period I ended up as OC Military Barracks Castlebar, from Trooper to OC the wheel had come full circle.
