Taming, The Dragon. A, sort of, Chautauqua

My first visit to 'The Dragon' and Deals Gap. Made the trip down US 129 and then on to Cherohala Skyway. Which is a MUST if you are doing the dragon anyway. Beautiful ride, scenic views, and a wonderful trip. 10/10 recommend.

I used to think the Iron Butt was kinda idiotic. Who wants to rush through 1000 miles so quickly? Wouldn't people rather enjoy the ride, take their time? Yet here I am embarking on a Saddlesore 1000. Attempting to circle Lake Michigan and complete 1000 miles in under 24hrs. It took a good amount of planning and some on the fly adjustments. And you know what? I loved it. Good job
You’re probably fortunate the IBA didn’t see this video. Some of your speeds that are shown on your video is probably higher than they like. Excessive speed is frowned on when doing their events.
What brand is that navigation machine is it Garmin or BMW motor rad?
It's Me NOM in ee - how can you live in Michigan and not know that? Lol - great videos, great ride! Thanks!
Great attitude when starting off each leg fresh. And great, great concluding thoughts. Thank you for sharing your trip with us!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video; helpful, thorough. Thank you. Did you stop too often for gas and receipts to document? I agree with stopping often to stretch, etc, but gas stops are slower, etc. Great idea to map out each stop and have everything, especially the addresses, on paper ahead of time.
Yeah. I was trying to balance out stoping to rest and get gas at the same time. Worked out pretty well. I did stop a couple other times quick just to get some water from my bag. It was fun and having it mapped out a head of time. For me made it a little more exciting with the anticipation of finishing each step.
Well done Jeff.
I see you ended with 1005 miles. I tend to run about 5% over. In the end, did your ride qualify?
I remember when Whit did that SS1K on her Sportster. It was brutal. I’m in the middle of enjoying part one of your SS1K videos, I will watch all of them. I’ve completed an SS1K, and a Bun Burner 1500 Silver.
Well done!
I lived in Harrison, Michigan as a young kid. I did ride over the Mac last year on our Newport to Maine ride two years ago with my wife, two up. Good choice of music. How did you pipe it into your video? I liked your level of organization with the printed out Google Maps! Living in the west, where the distances are huge, the only planning you must do is knowing where the gas stations are located.. Great job!
Thanks! I used iMovie to add it over the video and music from the free RUclips library.
Your long ride brought fond memories of my saddle sore rides! Crystal sharp video and I enjoyed your light hearted narration. I particularly enjoyed the shots of Lake Michigan... Please do not try to talk over your music....turn it down when the urge to talk takes over....Well done!
In 2003 I did my SS from Glenwood Springs, CO to Winona, MN 1100 miles in 17 hours. I did freeways only after sunset and 2 metro areas. After sunset because of potential deer strikes. The metros were Denver and Omaha.
👍
Nice ride. I am going to do one next month. I am going to Butte, MT with a stopover around Pocatello, ID. I plan on doing a SS1k and a BB. Do you keep your camera running the whole time?
Enjoy it! I keep the camera on my helmet the whole time. Which does add some weight and fatigue. But I only recorded when I had some thought or saw something Interesting. Had the GoPro set up to turn on/off with the record button.
Congratulations thinking of attempting myself what seat are you running on your bike did 350 in stock seat and my tailbone was sore
I have the stock heated seat. When I bought the bike I read the heated seat was quite a bit more comfortable then standard so I went for it. Its surprisingly comfortable for a factory seat.
Nicely done video. I've often thought making a loop around Lake Michigan would be fun-havent done it yet. Thanks for taking me along. I'm looking forward to the next instalments!
Memories!
Great!
Awesome!
Nicely done! Hard part is always the last it seems.
This was a good use of a motor vehicle.
I don't go 75 in rain in the Explorer, bikers are crazy!
"Not much to see there"? Sick burn on the D haha?
Awesome, the idea of living rather than distracting oneself from dieing.
Great video and reflection Jeff! Also thanks for editing out my bouncy landing in Jackson! Hahahaha Thanks for spending the morning with me! Had lots of fun.
Looked like a fun ride! Enjoyed your ramblings!
Looking down over the grate looks fun!
Cheers to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb! 🥂
Will definitely go one of these days! ;)
Haha! Great! Chautauqua-esque! Shout-out to Pirsig and all pondering bikers reflecting on real life.
Entertaining!
Niice! I like your stream of consciousness commentary! We all do it but we don't publish it. It's really funny when it is published. It is funny because it is somehow prohibited. We are trained to put on a persona, a mask to act a certain way. God forbid I express what I really think. It's refreshing to hear real thoughts from a real guy in a real moment. Keep it up!
Please do a walk around, and review video of your motorcycle.
Will do!
Nice job. Ive done a ride similar before. I’ve entertained a iron butt. We need to get together and ride more.
Thanks! I'm down. Toying with the idea of doing the iron butt this Saturday. We'll see.. haha. I want to get down to tail of the dragon too at some point.
