Brothers and saints of Christ, please read 1 Corinthians 11. 20-34 to observe and understand the Lords instructions to Christians (after Christ) regarding the holy communion; sharing of bread; lord's supper. You may give it whatever name, but it is the substance that matters. beginning with verse 20, we note Paul rebuking this group for how they handled this important aspect of what you may term traditional / spiritual practice - In verse 20 the implication is that they were denying themselves from actually eating the Lord's supper because of their lack of understanding which he began explain to them. Verse 23. "For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is [e]broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes." (Ditto: Matthew: 26.26-30)) * Note that in both verses 24 & 25 Paul indicating what he had received from the Lord (spoken by Jesus) stated that the bread and wine were respectfully the body and blood of Jesus; furthermore that the blood is a covenant blood which should be drunk in remembrance of the Lord - Faith in this spiritual practice, believing that it not just represents / symbolizes both the body and blood of Jesus, but by that same faith that it actually does represent the body and blood of Jesus is what Paul refers to, in parenthesis, as discerning the Lord's body. * Note that in verse 27 he refers to partaking of this practice in an unworthy manner which is as a result of not discerning that they were partaking of the body and blood of Jesus, coupled with the behaviour mentioned above, is why he judged them as guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. * Verse 28 indicates that any partaker should examine (way of life & repentance) himself before eating; understands / discerns that he/she is receiving the body and blood of the Lord - this is therefore done with solemnity in a holy / spiritual manner, is what makes the participation a worthy or holy one. * Note the conclusion in verses 29-31 outlining these things discussed so far: " For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world." * Note that if the Lord's supper or holy communion is not commanded by God, that the failure to either poorly or wrongfully observe / perform it would not amount to sin (he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner), and so to the extent that the Lord judges the person in the process, consequently leading to condemnation (for sin). "For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep or die * (Holy Communion. Please do not let any man confuse you as to this - it is the practice commanded that matters and not the name we apply to it. Do you know what is meant and do you know what you are doing / practising?). If Jesus commanded this, then it is holy just as we refer to the bible and scriptures as 'holy' - See 2 Peter.2.21. * Note, in emphasis, that the lord is quite serious about this aspect of our faith if a man is going to participate in this Christian spiritual tradition / practice, and to do it with the wrong mindset can lead to disfavour, judgement and condemnation with the world which is not God's intention for believers. Verse 32 "But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world (For Sin, righteousness & salvation see: Hebrews 10.26-39; 1 Corinthians. 9.24-27; Philippians. 2.12) Spiritual & Physical * In John chapter 6 verses 32 - 35, 48-51 Jesus refers to Himself as the bread of life Who came down from heaven (note that this is where God dwells); He describes Himself as the spiritual bread Who gives life by virtue of faith and belief in Him, as well as by feeding on Him the Word as spiritual food, yet that same bread according to the 2nd half of verse 51 could not be available until that bread died on the cross - In one sense, He is the bread of life from heaven that feeds the spirit of man; on another He is the bread that died to give life and on another He is the bread in Whom belief in is tied to the eating of both the flesh and blood by virtue of verses 53-57. Nevertheless, the Word or Bread of Life in this context represents 'spiritual manner' /food, Who feeds the spirit of man with spiritual food / life, contrary to the physical eating of manna in the wilderness as reported - The first is spiritual food while the 2nd, the manna in the wilderness, is physical food and both are necessary for man. * Note that in this same way, representing the both the spiritual and physical (these two dimensions exist in dealing with God), that Christians are commanded to eat / feed on Jesus (1) by taking Him into our spirit as bread / Word of life so that we may live by Him (2) partaking in the Lord's supper which is physical act, but yet an implicit spiritual exercise in the form of holy communion for believers and not sinners according to the discourse above (It is the Lord’s supper and commanded to believers in Christ alone). As the wise man stated in Ecclessiastes 12.13, "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind."
